Themes of the Month
CMIT South Elementary March Themes
Character Theme: Courage
STEM Theme: Music
Principal's Desk
Dear Amazing Tiger Families and Community,
What an absolutely incredible week we just experienced together! I am bursting with pride watching our Tiger community demonstrate resilience, flexibility, and excellence in so many remarkable ways. Our Tigers demonstrated courage in countless ways, logging into virtual learning despite technical challenges, performing on stage in front of audiences, and speaking up for charter school funding.
As we step into March and embrace Courage as our Character Word of the Month, I'm inspired by the powerful words of Maya Angelou: "Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently." Let's continue to encourage our Tigers to be brave in their learning, bold in their dreams, and courageous in standing up for what's right. When we act with courage, we unlock our ability to practice kindness, honesty, perseverance, and every other virtue that makes us strong!
💻 Virtual Learning- Monday, February 23, 2026
We started our week with a day of Virtual Learning on Monday, February 23, 2026, and I couldn't be prouder of how everyone rose to the challenge!
Thank you, thank you, and THANK YOU to:
Our Teachers and Staff for your unwavering dedication and commitment to delivering quality instruction, even when technology presented challenges. Your professionalism and flexibility ensure our Tigers never miss a beat in their learning!
Our Students who were ready to learn virtually, logged in on time, participated actively, and demonstrated the courage to navigate technology with confidence. You showed up ready to learn, and that matters!
Our Parents and Family Members who were committed to assisting your students, ensuring they had what they needed, and providing continued flexibility during a virtual learning day. Virtual learning is no small thing, and your partnership makes all the difference!
We made it through some technical difficulties together with patience, problem-solving, and perseverance. That's the Tiger way!
🏛️ Advocacy Day 2026 - Making Our Voices Heard!
Wednesday, February 25, 2026, some of our courageous parents and students attended Advocacy Day 2026 in Annapolis with our other CMIT schools and CLF leadership!
What an incredible experience for our Tiger families to travel to our state capital, meet with legislators, and advocate for charter school funding and educational equity! Speaking up for what our schools need requires Courage, and we're so proud of everyone who represented CMIT South Elementary with pride and purpose.
Thank you for using your voices to make a difference for ALL our Tigers! Your advocacy today shapes our students' education tomorrow.

Students are ONLY permitted to bring in NON-FOOD items to distribute to classmates at the end of the school day. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all of our students safe at CMIT South ES.
Additionally, please note that teachers and staff are unable to participate in distributing communications/invitations or email addresses related to birthday celebrations. All planning for birthdays needs to happen outside of school so that it does not take away from the purpose of instruction.

Counselor's Corner
As we welcome the month of March, we are focusing on our schoolwide character theme: courage. Courage isn’t about not feeling afraid — it’s about doing the right thing, trying something new, or speaking up even when it feels a little scary.
At school, we are encouraging students to show courage by:
-
Trying challenging work without giving up.
-
Asking for help when they need it.
-
Standing up for themselves and others in a kind and respectful way.
-
Learning from mistakes and trying again.
You can support this theme at home by:
-
Talking about a time when you had to be brave.
-
Praising effort when your child tries something new.
-
Encouraging positive self-talk like, “I can try,” or “I won’t give up.”
-
Reading books together that highlight characters who show courage.
When we work together to build courageous hearts and minds, our students grow not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. Thank you for partnering with us to help our children shine!
Educationally,
Ms. Chandler
Math Department
Reading Department
As we step into March, we are excited to continue growing strong readers across our school! This is a wonderful time of year to refresh reading routines and build stamina as students prepare for the final stretch of the school year.
At home, you can support your child by:
-
Setting aside 15–20 minutes each day for reading.
-
Asking your child to retell what they read in their own words.
-
Talking about new vocabulary words and encouraging them to use those words in conversation.
-
Visiting your local library to explore new genres and topics that spark curiosity.
March is also a great time to celebrate the joy of reading! Consider exploring books by new authors, reading together as a family, or starting a simple reading challenge at home.
Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s literacy growth. Your encouragement and involvement truly make a difference! 📚✨
Warmly,
Mrs. A. Matthews

On Our Journey to Becoming a Green School!
We are excited to share that our school is officially in the process of applying to become a Green School! This important step reflects our commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and empowering students to become informed environmental leaders.
As part of this journey, we will be highlighting influential African Americans in STEM who have advanced environmental literacy and environmental justice. Throughout the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to share brief spotlights during morning announcements, recognizing scientists, engineers, and advocates whose work has helped protect our planet and strengthen our communities. These student-led highlights will celebrate contributions that inspire innovation, equity, and climate action.
We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our educators and students who have already participated in meaningful sustainability activities and completed outstanding projects. From reducing our carbon footprint to increasing environmental literacy across grade levels, your dedication and teamwork are making a real difference.
Together, we are building a culture of environmental awareness, responsibility, and action. Every recycling effort, energy-saving habit, research project, and classroom discussion moves us one step closer to our Green School goal.
Let’s continue working together to create a healthier, more sustainable future for our school and our community!

🏠 Home Discussion Tips
Want to keep the learning going at home? Here are a few ways to chat about landforms with your scholar:
Window Watch: Look outside or take a drive! Ask: "Do you see any high land like hills, or is the ground mostly flat like a plain?" 🚗👀
Travel Talk: Look at photos from past family trips. Ask: "What kind of landforms did we see there? Was there a beach (coastline) or were we near the mountains?" 📸⛰️
Kitchen Creations: Use mashed potatoes or playdough to "build" a landform together! Ask: "Can you show me what a valley looks like between two mountains?" 🥔🎨

Goods, Services, and Our Community!
In Social Studies, we are shifting our focus to the world of Economics! 🛒 Our scholars are beginning to explore the difference between goods (things we can touch and use, like toys or apples 🍎🧸) and services (work that people do for others, like a haircut or fixing a car 💇♂️🛠️).
Who Provides Them?
We’ll also be learning about the hardworking people in our community who provide these goods and services! 👷♀️👩⚕️ From the farmers who grow our food to the doctors who keep us healthy, we are discovering how everyone plays a part in helping our neighborhood thrive. 🏘️✨

Keep the Conversation Growing at Home
Talking about growth and change can be a wonderful bonding experience! Here are some ways to engage your scholar:
Then vs. Now: Look through old baby photos together! 📸 Ask: "What is something you can do now that you couldn't do when you were a baby?" 👣
Family Tree Talk: Discuss how different family members are at different stages of their life cycles (infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors). 🌳👴👵
Nature Walk: Look for life cycles in action outside! 🐜🌸 See if you can spot a caterpillar, a budding flower, or a bird's nest. Ask: "What stage of life do you think that is in?" 🐦🌷
3rd Grade
Grade Level Updates:
Hello Third Grade Families,
This week has been full of thoughtful learning and great engagement across all subject areas!
Reading Updates:
Ms. Howard’s Class:
This week, students completed an assessment on Granddaddy’s Turn, demonstrating their understanding of main idea, character traits, point of view, and using text evidence.
Ms. Madison’s Class:
Students have been reading a biography about Kenyan climate activist Wangari Maathai! We have used this text to discuss the text features of biographies, as well as other types of informational text. We are also studying words with long u vowel teams such as oo, ew, ui, ue, and eu! We have also been focusing on revising and editing previous writing prompts as part of the writing process.
Social Studies Updates:
Ms. Howard’s Class:
Students also began presenting their African American Heroes projects. Through these presentations, students are learning from one another and discovering important facts about numerous influential figures, including artists, athletes, activists, scientists, and leaders. It has been wonderful to see students both teaching and learning from their peers!
Ms. Madison’s Class:
For social studies, we have been learning about early Spanish explorers and Spanish settlement in the Americas! Specifically, we have focused on the reasons behind Spanish settlement (claiming land for Spain, making money, fame, and spreading religion), and how this affected indigenous communities.
Math Updates:
Ms. Hendy’s Class:
In Math, we continued working on the distributive property. Students had the opportunity to show off their skills during small-group math games, where they practiced breaking apart numbers to solve multiplication and division problems efficiently. I’ve included photos below so you can see them in action!
Ms. Flores’ Class:
This week, we completed Topic 10. During that topic, the students learned how to multiply large numbers when one factor is a multiple of 10.Next up….fractions!
Science Updates:
Ms. Hendy’s Class:
Students explored animals in different environments and conducted observations and investigations on inherited traits. We compared traits between parents and offspring, as well as similarities and differences among siblings. Students asked great questions and made strong connections using evidence from their observations.
Mrs. Flores’ Class:
Students completed Topic 5, "Adaptations and Survival." Their written evaluation centered on making connections across the three lessons, and we continue to work on providing detailed and thoughtful answers. The students then completed their end-of-topic performance task, which focused on the structure of bird beaks. Students chose tools to imitate the beaks of two specific birds; to complete the task, they used their chosen "beaks” to try and eat bird “food.” This activity truly brought the concepts of adaptations and survival to life for the students.
Health Updates:
Ms. Hendy’s Class:
In Health, we discussed family dynamics and learned that families can look different for each individual. Students reflected on their own experiences while practicing respect and understanding for others. We also learned about genes we inherit from our parents and connected this directly to what we are learning in Science, helping students see how learning transfers across subjects.
Ms. Flores’ Class:
The students completed the “Healthy Family” booklet with an end of topic assessment. We are looking forward to moving on next week!

Greetings Team 4Ward,
Warm greetings to each of you. We hope this message finds your household well. We had a pretty interesting week with a virtual instruction day, field trip, and the Black History Month Presentation. We are proud of the maturity and flexibility that was shown by our scholars at the Publick Playhouse. Students had the opportunity to learn more about the obstacles that Jesse Owens and Wilma Rudolph overcame to become Olympic champions. Students have an excitement for plays and musicals, please consider visiting the Publick Playhouse as a family. They have shows all year, during the weekends, and the evenings.
💻Many class activities use online tools. A charged computer ensures your child can fully participate in lessons and complete assignments. Our students also need a pair of wired headphones to complete activities and for testing. Students who arrive on time are better prepared for learning and reduce classroom disruptions. Please plan to have your child at school a few minutes early each day. A healthy breakfast helps students focus and have energy for learning. School breakfast is available daily until 8:00 when students arrive in the morning.

Fourth Grade Information:
i-Ready:
i-Ready is a computer based math and reading program that is available for all of our scholars. Scholars have completed their diagnostics and are working on programs based on their areas of need. This program will be available all summer for students to continue to utilize in both reading and math. Please help your child complete at least 45 minutes of math and reading to grow their abilities.
Absences:
This is a friendly reminder that late work is only accepted if a student has an excused absence! If a scholar is absent and does not bring a note they will earn a 0 on the assignment that was missed. Please read the reminders to ensure that you are partnering with your scholars to make them successful for school. If a scholar leaves early or arrives late to school and it is not excused they will earn a 0 for all work that is not completed.
If your scholar is absent, please complete the CMIT South ES Absence Google Form within 3 days of your scholar returning back to school. https://forms.gle/euXzCpDvNGbLwb8U6 In order for students to receive make-up work you must provide a note stating; the student’s name, the date of absence, and reason for absence. Work is provided to students upon their return to school with an absence note.

Emails are not monitored over the weekend or in the evening hours when teachers have gone home. If the message sent relates to dismissal changes please call the school directly to leave a message with the front office.
Grading:
Please check Synergy weekly to see scholar’s updated grades. Canvas is a Learning Management System in which scholars utilize to complete assignments and get access to materials. The grades entered in Synergy are those that will be used to calculate progress reports and report cards.
It is imperative that work is complete and turned in on time in order to receive full credit. Our district has set policies regarding assignment completion and make-up assignments. Only students that have an excused absence will be given an opportunity to receive and complete missing assignments.
Uniforms:

Reading Updates:
We have concluded Unit 4 in Volume 2 Impacts and will return back to Volume 1 to work with Unit 2 Adaptations. In this unit students will learn about how different living things adapt to the environment using informational and literature texts.
This Week:
This week students revisited the myths “Pandora” and “Race to the Top.” A myth reflects human beliefs about why and how the world is the way it is.Students were able to identify a common theme or lesson that was shown by both texts. Students also have an opportunity to write about how the actions of a character affected the events of the story. Students also reflected on the question of the week about how being disobedient can cause problems. We also have our five question assessment based on the story and our word study assessment on homophones.
Next Week:
We are going back into Volume 1 Unit 2 “Adapations.” In this unit students will read about how different living things adapt to their environments. Our first story of the week is called “Feather: Not Just for Flying” In this informational text we will read about the different ways that birds use their feathers. Students will monitor their inner conversations as we determine how these birds have adapted to their environment. We will work on the skills of main idea and evaluating important details. The word study for this week will be plurals.
Math Updates:
This week and next in Math, scholars continued working through Topics 3 and 4, focusing on using strategies and properties to solve 1-digit and 2-digit multiplication problems. Please continue to build math fluency through repetition of basic math facts to build speed and math confidence.
Please encourage scholars to practice their facts at home using Prodigy, IXL, i-Ready, and XtraMath to boost automatic recall. A few minutes of daily practice goes a long way!
Science Updates:
In Science we will begin our next topic, Human Use of Energy. In this topic, scholars will describe how fuels humans use for energy are derived from natural sources. They will learn that some of these resources are renewable over time, and others are not, and that human use of these energy resources can affect the environment in multiple ways.
Social Studies Updates:
This week, students reflected on their 4th Grade American History Museum by completing a written response. They were asked to thoughtfully explain what they learned, describe their chosen historical figure or topic, and reflect on why it is important to American history. This activity helped students strengthen their writing skills while deepening their understanding of historical events and people.
Next week, we will begin Chapter 3, which focuses on U.S. Government. Students will learn about the three branches of government—legislative, executive, and judicial—and explore the role and responsibilities of each branch. They will also discuss how the branches work together to create laws, enforce them, and ensure fairness within our government system.

CARTS
General CARTS Messages:
Due to weather related closing and delays affecting class times, there will be a limited amount of grades in CARTS for progress reports. Specifically, Art, P.E., Music, Technology, and LEGO. Thank you for your understanding!
Please remember to check your student's Canvas assignments and Synergy grades regularly!
This was a week of exploration for some classes! We did pixel art in 2nd grade and modeling clay in 3rd!
LEGO:
Our future engineers are still learning different aspects of mechanical energy! Kindergarten and 1st grade are exploring how energy is used to make propellers move by pushing and/or spinning it. Second and third graders are designing, building and testing a fan to create the strongest breeze possible using pulleys and gears. Fourth and fifth grade students are doing the same, but creating a windmill and showing how engineers improve designs through testing. We got the windmill to move this week!
Technology:
Dear Parents and Families,
Just as a reminder! We are halfway into the 3rd Quarter, an important time of the school year. As we move into the second half, our focus will shift toward increased accountability, responsibility, and ownership of learning—especially in Technology class.
Academic Expectations
Students will be expected to:
*Complete and submit assignments on time
*Follow directions carefully
*Stay engaged and participate actively
*Take initiative when they need help
Please encourage your child to check their work carefully before submitting and to communicate with me if they have questions.
Behavior & Grades
This quarter, student behavior will directly impact their overall grade.
Positive participation, respectful communication, and following classroom expectations are essential. As we often discuss in class, being a strong digital citizen includes how we act, speak, and collaborate with others—both online and in person.
We are building not only tech skills but also character, responsibility, and leadership.
Check Canvas Regularly
Please make it a habit to:
*Check the Canvas course page frequently
*Review missing assignments
*Monitor upcoming due dates
The 3rd quarter is a great opportunity for students to refocus, grow, and finish the year strong. With your partnership and support at home, we can help students build confidence, responsibility, and success in both academics and behavior.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Music:
Hello CMIT Family!
Just as a reminder!I encourage you to motivate your students to stay focused and engaged with their lessons. It's important for us to work together to catch up, as we are currently two weeks behind.
Rather than overwhelming students with unnecessary assignments, I plan to strengthen their understanding by revisiting and connecting closely related concepts. This approach will ensure that everyone is exposed to the essential information they need to succeed.
Thank you for your support and dedication! Let’s make this a fantastic journey together!
