OWL NEWS
VOLUME 19 - MAY 30, 2026
Owl Families,
What an incredible year it has been! As we close out the 2025-2026 school year, we want to take a moment to thank you, our amazing families, for your partnership, support, patience, and trust throughout the year. Your collaboration has been essential in helping our community thrive.
This year, our school community truly embraced our theme of “Living and Leading the Riverside Way”—being respectful, responsible, and safe each and every day. We are so proud of how our scholars brought this to life in their classrooms, hallways, and beyond. Their growth—academically, socially, and emotionally—has been inspiring to witness.
To our scholars—summer is a time to recharge, explore, and continue growing in new ways. Soak up the sunshine, play outside, spend time with loved ones, and dive into a good book. Whether you are learning something new, trying a different hobby, or simply enjoying time to rest, we hope your summer is filled with joy and discovery.
Savor every moment. Before we know it, August will be here, and we’ll be ready to kick off another year of learning, leadership, and possibility—continuing to live and lead the Riverside Way together.
With much love and appreciation,
Heather Kama-Starr and Kyle Cohen

SUMMER LEARNING
As we head into summer break, we encourage families to continue building learning into everyday moments. Research shows that consistent reading, practicing academic skills, exploring new interests, and staying mentally active during the summer can help reduce “summer learning loss” and prepare scholars for a strong start in the fall. The good news is that learning can happen anywhere — through games, family activities, library visits, outdoor adventures, and meaningful conversations. Below are some fun and engaging ways families can help keep learning alive all summer long!
Kindergarten–2nd Grade
- Read together for at least 20 minutes each day. Visit your local library and explore fun series like Elephant & Piggie, Pete the Cat, and Magic Tree House.
- Practice math facts and problem-solving through games, cooking, counting money, and measuring while baking.
Explore learning websites like ABCya and Starfall for reading and math practice.
- Keep a summer journal by drawing pictures and writing sentences about vacations, camp days, or favorite summer memories.
- Create a family scavenger hunt using letters, shapes, colors, or sight words around the house or neighborhood.
3rd–5th Grade
- Continue daily reading with chapter books such as Wonder, Because of Winn-Dixie, or The Wild Robot.
- Practice multiplication, division, and fractions through board games, card games, cooking, and budgeting for summer activities.
Explore engaging learning platforms like Khan Academy Kids & Khan Academy, Prodigy Math, and National Geographic Kids.
- Encourage curiosity with STEM projects such as building forts, designing paper airplanes, creating obstacle courses, or completing simple science experiments at home.
- Write letters, postcards, comic strips, or short stories to keep writing skills strong all summer long.
6th–8th Grade
- Read independently for 20–30 minutes daily. Great middle-grade options include Refugee, The Crossover, and The Hunger Games.
- Strengthen math and critical thinking skills through real-world practice like planning trips, comparing prices, budgeting, or cooking with recipes.
Use online learning resources such as IXL Learning, Duolingo, and Crash Course for enrichment and exploration.
- Encourage creative projects like photography, coding, podcasting, journaling, art, or video creation to build communication and problem-solving skills.
- Stay active and connected through sports, camps, volunteering, outdoor adventures, and family game nights. Social-emotional wellness matters too.
- Visit museums, parks, libraries, zoos, and local community events to continue learning beyond the classroom.

NURSE UPPERMAN UPDATES
May is Asthma Awareness Month. For more information go to the following website--https://allergyasthmanetwork.org/
Please pick up your child's meds before the end of the year, as they will be thrown out on 05/29/2026, unless you make arrangements with Mrs. Upperman. We have another nurse coming to our school for Summer School, so she needs room for the summertime medications.
Don't forget about immunizations this summer as it is a good time to get all caught up on the State required immunizations for school. Help keep our community safe and healthy!
Summertime is also a good time to get those medication orders done , so when next school year rolls around, you are ready to hand Mrs. Upperman your child's medication and his/her medication sheet. Meds are not given without a Provider's order. The medication sheet is located on CMSD website. The link is below.
Also, for next year we will have he Cleveland Clinic Mobile Health Van here. PLEASE consider making sure you have an Integrated Health Form completed and you can have things like immunizations, allergy medication, asthma action plans, etc. taken care by the Provider on the van. You don't have to give up your regular physician to be seen by the Cleveland Clinic SBHC Van. Pleases call Mrs. Upperman at 216-838-6714 for any questions or suggestions.
