Message from the Superintendent
As the crisp air and colors of fall surround us, we enter a season that reminds us to slow down, reflect, and appreciate all that we have. Thanksgiving offers a meaningful opportunity to express gratitude for the many blessings in our lives, the warmth of gathering with loved ones, the joy of giving and sharing, and the sense of belonging we experience within our school community.
I am truly thankful for our students, families, and staff who make our schools such special places to learn and grow. As we look ahead, we’re excited to increase opportunities for family engagement and collaboration. Your voices and perspectives will help shape the future of our district’s work and strengthen the partnership that supports every student’s success. Our Academic Affairs Directors just wrapped up our third One Community, One Family event on November 4th and we are excited to introduce a new community event, the development of our Portrait of a Learner!
Portrait of a Learner - A Community Vision for Learning
This crucial work brings the opportunity for our schools and community to collaborate side-by-side to develop a Portrait of a Learner, a collective vision that articulates our aspirations for every student in Plano CUSD 88. Our Portrait of a Learner will serve as the foundation of work for our schools, bringing our community together with a shared vision.
You are a valued member of our community, and I need your voice and perspective. I invite you to join our Portrait Design Team, and share ongoing input, and together inform our Portrait of a Learner.
Beginning in January 2026, the Portrait Design Team will explore the following questions:
What are the hopes, dreams, and aspirations that our community has for our young people?
What are the skills and mindsets that our children need for success in this rapidly changing and complex world?
What are the implications for the design of the learning experiences for every student we provide in our school systems?
Save these dates!
Our Portrait Design Team will meet four times to design the Portrait of a Learner, and each meeting builds upon the other:
- Meeting 1: January 29, 2026, | 6:00-8:30 p.m. @ P.H. Miller - Gymnasium
- Meeting 2: February 2, 2026 | 6:30-8:30 p.m. @ P.H. Miller - Gymnasium
- Meeting 3: March 2, 2026 | 6:30-8:30 p.m. @ P.H. Miller - Gymnasium
- Meeting 4: April 13, 2026 | 6:30-8:30 p.m. @ P.H. Miller - Gymnasium
We want our Portrait of a Learner to be locally developed and globally positioned. I hope that you’ll bring your unique perspective to this collaborative process. Our shared aspiration is that all students have an educational experience that prepares them to be lifelong learners and contributors today and tomorrow.

November 15, 2025: Illinois State Board of Education - School Board Members Day
November 15th marked School Board Members Day, an opportunity to thank the school board members of Plano CUSD 88 and give them the recognition they have earned for providing a local voice for our community’s education decisions.
School board members are volunteers serving as advocates striving for quality education opportunities for every student. Our board members take on this responsibility based on their strong commitment to our community and its children. Our board members act as front-line advocates, providing a local voice for the community, a vision for the district, and a pathway to success for our students.
Our board of education acts to safeguard two of our community’s most precious resources, our children and tax dollars while striving to create the best education environment possible.
The Plano Board of Education was one of 42 state school districts to earn the School Board Governance Recognition again this year, which recognizes exceptional governance practices by the Illinois Association of School Board (IASB). The Board earned this honor through its effective governance behaviors and its commitment toward obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively lead the district.
Thank you to Board President Tim Campbell (Academic Committee, Finance Committee), Board Vice President Kyle Klatt (Finance Committee), Board Member Mike Jernigan (Academic Committee), Board Member Chuck Schneider (Finance, Policy Committee), Board Member Doug Lyle (IVVC Board), Board Member Chad Martin (Academic Committee), and Board Member Tim Waldrop (Policy Committee). Preparing for Winter Months
Bundle Up!
With winter fast approaching, we want to remind everyone about the importance of dressing warmly to stay comfortable and safe during outdoor activities. As temperatures continue to drop, please ensure your child comes to school prepared with appropriate clothing, including a warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf, and boots.
Staying warm and bundled up allows our students to enjoy their time outdoors during recess and physical activities, even on chilly days. We want everyone to be able to participate fully in a safe and enjoyable way. Thank you for helping us keep our school community warm, healthy, and ready to take on the winter months!
For more information on recess guidelines, please speak to your child's school directly.
Head Lice
I want to take a moment to address the topic of head lice, which has recently come up in some schools, especially as the weather changes and more students are wearing hats, scarves, and other shared winter items.
First and foremost, please know that head lice are common and can happen to anyone. They are not a reflection of personal hygiene or cleanliness. Lice spread primarily through direct head-to-head contact, and occasionally by sharing items like hats, hairbrushes, and headphones. Schools can be an easy place for lice to spread due to the close proximity of students, particularly with young children. To help prevent the spread of lice in our schools, we ask that parents check their children regularly, encourage your children to avoid sharing personal items such as hats, brushes, or headphones, and notify the school promptly if you discover lice on your child. This allows us to take proactive steps such as enhanced cleaning to prevent further spread.
In managing head lice, our district follows the guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). According to the AAP, head lice are not a health hazard or a sign of poor hygiene, and they do not spread disease. Based on their guidance, we want to share a few key points regarding our approach:
Attendance
The AAP advises that children with lice should not be excluded from school. Lice are generally not spread through casual contact in a classroom setting. Therefore, students can remain in school while parents work on appropriate treatment measures at home.
Detection and Notification
If a child is identified with head lice, we will notify their parents or guardians promptly and offer information about treatment options. While classroom-wide checks for lice are not recommended by the AAP due to their ineffectiveness, we encourage families to monitor their children regularly at home.
Prevention and Education
To help reduce the spread of lice, we provide educational resources to our staff, students, and families. Discussions about avoiding head-to-head contact and sharing personal items like hats, combs, and headphones can also be beneficial.
Privacy and Support
We handle cases of head lice discreetly to protect the privacy of the affected child and family. The school will reach out to parents/guardians of a class when the classroom has a significant number of confirmed cases. Our staff members are available to answer any questions or concerns and to offer support and guidance on treatment options.
We recognize that head lice can be frustrating, and we are committed to working together to address any cases that arise. If you have any questions or would like further resources, please feel free to reach out to the school office.
Our goal is to keep our school environment healthy and safe for all students. With awareness and quick action, we can minimize the impact. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
