Message from the Principal and Assistant Principal
Dear Hillcrest and Pine Avenue Families,
This December, our school-wide Character Strong SEL program will focus on empathy—the ability to understand and share others' feelings. As your partner, we know that empathy is more than kindness; it is a foundational skill that helps students build meaningful relationships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and contribute positively to their community.
When students practice empathy, they learn to listen deeply, consider perspectives different from their own, and respond with compassion. These skills strengthen friendships, improve classroom collaboration, and create a culture where everyone feels valued. Empathy also helps students recognize when someone is struggling and encourages them to offer support, fostering a sense of belonging that benefits the entire school.
The importance of empathy extends far beyond the classroom. As our students grow and eventually enter the workforce, empathy will be one of the most sought-after skills by employers. In today's world, teams are diverse, global, and interconnected. Success depends not only on technical knowledge but also on the ability to work well with others. Employees who demonstrate empathy are better at communicating, leading, and problem-solving. They can navigate differences, build trust, and create inclusive environments where innovation thrives.
Research shows that workplaces with empathetic leaders and team members experience higher morale, stronger collaboration, and greater productivity. By cultivating empathy now, we are preparing our students not only to be successful professionals but also compassionate citizens who make a difference in their communities.
As families, you can reinforce empathy at home by encouraging children to notice how others feel, ask thoughtful questions, and imagine themselves in someone else's shoes. Together, we can help our students grow into empathetic individuals who are ready to lead with both heart and mind.
Your partner in education,
Dr. Konowalow and Ms. Jaeck

School Highlights
Our first grade team celebrated the season of gratitude with a special Friendsgiving event that brought joy, connection, and learning to our students. As part of the celebration, we were honored to welcome author Toni Wilson, who shared her delightful book Quirky the Turkey. Students were captivated by the story’s humor and heart, and they had the unique opportunity to hear directly from the author about her inspiration and creative process.
The Friendsgiving gathering was more than just a festive occasion—it was a chance for students to practice kindness, community, and empathy, all while enjoying the spirit of Thanksgiving together. Events like these remind us of the power of stories to spark imagination and bring people closer.
Due to the shortened school week, our Student of the Week recognition will remain the same and continue into next week. We look forward to celebrating new honorees after the holiday break.
