June 2026 Newsletter

Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s)
As we close the chapter on another remarkable school year, I am filled with gratitude, pride, and excitement for what we have accomplished together as a school community. The 2025-2026 school year has been one of the most successful and transformative years in recent Butler School District history, and none of it would have been possible without the support of our students, staff, families, Board of Education, community partners, and alumni.
We began the year with a milestone moment - the ribbon cutting celebration for the newly completed upgrades to Butler High School. These improvements have created a learning environment that is truly second to none and reflect our community's commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for our students.
This fall, our Butler Bulldogs once again made history as our football team captured a second consecutive State Championship, demonstrating the dedication, perseverance, and excellence that define Butler athletics.
Throughout the year, we remained committed to serving not only our students but also our broader community. In partnership with the Butler Police Department, we provided more than 200 Thanksgiving meals to local families, reinforcing the spirit of compassion and service that makes Butler such a special place to call home.
Academically and operationally, our District continued to excel. We successfully completed our QSAC monitoring process with high scores across all areas, confirming that the Butler School District continues to operate at an exceptional level. During a challenging fiscal climate marked by staff reductions and school closures across New Jersey, we developed a budget that preserved every existing program, expanded opportunities for students, and reduced the tax impact on our community.
Our students continued to achieve at the highest levels. Our 7th-grade STEAM students advanced to the State Finals of the STEAM Tank Challenge, proudly representing Butler and showcasing the strength of our innovation and technology programs. At Butler High School, we hosted a Community Partnership SEL Day, providing students with meaningful life skills and experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting.
We also continued to invest in facilities and programs that support student success. This summer we will realize the completion of our newly renovated Guidance Suite at Butler High School, creating an enhanced environment for student and family support services. Through a generous partnership with the BBEA and the Butler High School Class of 1975, we will expand our broadcasting and digital media programs with the creation of a new studio space that will serve students for years to come.
As a district, we continue to lead with innovation. Members of our leadership team and staff were invited to present at the New Jersey AI Summit, highlighting Butler's forward-thinking approach to artificial intelligence while maintaining the personal connections and relationships that remain at the heart of education. We also spent the year researching and selecting a new mathematics resource, i-Ready Classroom Mathematics, which will be implemented next school year to further strengthen student learning. Simultaneously, we worked diligently to transition from Genesis to RealTime, creating a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for students, families, and staff.
Our accomplishments extended far beyond the classroom. Derek Hall was recognized as the NJIC Athletic Director of the Year. Butler was once again named a Best Community for Music Education by NAMM, and our band earned the extraordinary distinction of being selected for a prestigious partnership program with William Paterson University, only the third band ever chosen for this honor.
We also celebrated national recognition for our schools. Butler High School and Richard Butler School were both named among the nation's best schools by U.S. News & World Report, while Richard Butler School maintained its prestigious designation as a School to Watch.
These achievements represent only a portion of what our students and staff accomplished this year. Every day, our classrooms, stages, athletic fields, and community spaces were filled with examples of learning, growth, creativity, resilience, and Bulldog pride.
As we look ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, there is even more to be excited about. We will launch the Butler Futures Program and begin the Butler 250 Project, a year-long celebration integrating our nation's 250th birthday into learning experiences across the district. We will also complete the remaining referendum projects, including sanitation upgrades at Richard Butler School, window replacements at Butler High School, final improvements to the high school parking lot, and other facility enhancements that will continue to benefit our students and community.
On behalf of the Butler Board of Education and the entire Butler School District, thank you for your continued support, partnership, and unwavering belief in our schools. We are proud of all that we have accomplished together, and even more excited for what lies ahead.
Be Well!
Dr. J.
PROM!
We still have some spots left for this summer's Summer Enrichment Program. Registration is closing this week, so if you would like your child(ren) to participate in our successful, fun programs, please be certain to sign up. We will start to finalize all placements and programming next week, after which, we will not be able to admit any further students.

Butler Futures Program
The Bulldog Futures Program at Butler High School provides a rigorous, accelerated academic track designed for high-achieving students within their own community. By utilizing a cohort-based model, the initiative allows participants to tackle college-level coursework and STEM-focused labs while maintaining full access to local extracurricular activities like sports and music. This four-year blueprint balances academic intensity with robust emotional support, offering specialized facilities such as robotics and makerspace studios. Rather than choosing between elite rigor and social integration, students benefit from a comprehensive education that prepares them for top-tier university admissions. The program emphasizes an earned placement process that identifies resilient candidates ready for a challenging but supported hometown high school experience.
Butler School District Summer Hours
The Butler School District will operate on summer hours starting on June 22nd and continue through August 28th. All schools and offices will be open 5 days a week from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
During the summer, varied members of our staff will be on vacation. We will continue to follow our efforts of returning all communication within 24 hours, but ask that all understand that, at times, individuals may be away from the District enjoying time with their family, friends, and loved ones. In these instances, communication will be returned when that individual returns to the office. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Summer Fun and Family Adventures: The Bulldog Summer Challenge!
Mrs. Peg Lynch, Supervisor of STEAM
Mrs. Suzanne Greco, Supervisor of Humanities
Summer is finally here! While we hope all of our students enjoy a well-deserved break filled with sunshine, relaxation, and fun, summer is also a wonderful opportunity for families to continue learning together in creative and exciting ways. Research shows that even small amounts of reading, exploration, and family engagement throughout the summer can help students return to school feeling confident and ready to learn. The best part? Learning doesn't have to look like schoolwork. We invite all Butler families to take on the Bulldog Summer Challenge by trying some of the activities below!
Reading Adventures
The "Read Everywhere" Challenge
How many unusual places can your family read this summer?
Try reading:
- At a park
- Under a tree
- On a porch swing
- At the beach or pool
- In a tent
- During a picnic
- At a grandparent's house
Family Book Talks
Choose one book, article, or story each week and discuss:
- What surprised you?
- Who was your favorite character?
- What would you have done differently?

Even a 10-minute conversation can strengthen reading comprehension and communication skills.
Reading Bingo
See if your child can:
- Read a mystery
- Read a biography
- Read a comic book
- Read about an animal
- Read outside
- Read to a younger sibling
- Listen to an audiobook
Backyard Science Explorers
Science is everywhere!
Nature Detective
Create a summer nature journal and record:
- Birds you observe
- Insects you discover
- Flowers and plants
- Cloud formations
- Weather patterns
Ask questions like:
- Why do certain plants grow in one area?
- Which insects appear most often?
- How does the weather change throughout the week?
Build a Bird Buffet
Create a simple bird feeder using household materials and observe:
- Which birds visit?
- What times of day do they come?
- Which foods do they prefer?
Congratulations—you've just become a wildlife researcher!
The Ice Cube Challenge
Place ice cubes in different locations:
- Shade
- Sunlight

- Write a thank-you note
- Help a neighbor
- Hold a door for someone

- Leave encouraging notes around the house
Family Conversation Jar
Fill a jar with fun questions such as:
- What would your dream vacation be?
- If you could invent anything, what would it be?
- What are you most proud of?
- What do you hope to learn next year?
Pull one question each night during dinner.
Creativity Corner
Sidewalk Storytelling
Draw a scene with sidewalk chalk and create a story about what is happening.
Summer Photo Challenge
Take pictures of:
- Something beautiful
- Something that makes you laugh
- Something that shows teamwork
- Something you've never noticed before
Create a digital or printed summer memory album.
Family Invention Challenge
Using only recycled materials, design:
- A new toy
- A pet invention
- A tool that solves a problem
- A future school gadget
Present your invention Shark Tank-style to the family!
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
Movement Marathon
See if your family can complete:
- 100 miles of walking
- 50 bike rides
- 25 family hikes
- 20 playground visits
- 10 outdoor games
Track your progress together all summer long.
Outdoor Learning Walk
During a walk, challenge children to identify:
- Five different colors
- Four different sounds
- Three different animals
- Two things they've never noticed before
- One thing they are grateful for
Remember that learning happens everywhere, not just in classrooms. Every conversation, book, adventure, hike, family meal, and act of kindness helps children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Most importantly, make memories together. The moments families spend talking, exploring, laughing, and learning are often the experiences students carry with them long after summer ends.

LifeTown Field Trip – Ms. Talasco & Ms. Zabriskie’s Classes
Ms. Talasco and Ms. Zabriskie’s classes recently visited LifeTown in Livingston, a fantastic 53,000-square-foot immersive learning center designed for individuals with special abilities. Students had the opportunity to explore a realistic “town” setting where they practiced essential life skills through hands-on experiences in shops, a medical center, everyday errands, and interactive environments.
The students had a wonderful time! They purchased books at the bookstore, visited the pet store, designed and made their own T-shirts, bought snacks, and enjoyed a movie at the theater, complete with popcorn. They also spent time playing on the indoor playground, relaxing in the sensory room, and digging in the sand pit.
It was a great day filled with laughter, learning, and joyful experiences. A wonderful time was had by all, and we look forward to future visits to LifeTown!
Fostering Creativity and Inclusivity in Butler!
Students in Mr. Baylor and Mrs. Baskets' class recently embarked on a field trip to Creative Abilities, the inclusive art studio and tutoring center in Butler. This hands-on visit aligned with the Limitless Leaders program's emphasis on unlocking potential, encouraging students to explore their creative sides in a supportive and adaptive environment. During this field trip, our awesome students engaged in artistic activities designed for all ages and abilities, promoting self-expression, collaboration, and confidence-building through inclusive programs that celebrate diverse talents.
During their visit, our students dove into hands-on creative projects in the studio, working together to express themselves and try new artistic techniques. The experience allowed them to discover personal strengths, work with classmates, and see creativity as something accessible to everyone. This field trip reinforced key leadership values like empathy, innovation, and inclusivity, while showing our students the many unique abilities worth exploring and celebrating right here in our local Butler community.
Wellness Wire
As we approach the end of the school year, our nursing team wants to ensure everyone is prepared for a smooth transition into summer and the new school year ahead. Please take a moment to review these important health-related updates:
Medication Pick-Up
If your child has medication stored in the health office, please plan to pick it up by the last day of school, Friday, June 19th. For safety reasons, any medication not collected by that date will be properly disposed of over the summer.
Health Forms for Next Year
Medication and health concern paperwork for the 2026–27 school year will be provided as needed by each building's nurse. You can also access all medical and health forms anytime on the Butler Public Schools website.
We encourage families to coordinate directly with your school’s nurse for specific questions or to make arrangements. We are here to help!
Immunization Requirements
To ensure a healthy start to the school year, all students must be up to date on their age-appropriate immunizations before returning in September. Students who are not in compliance may be excluded from school per state regulations. If you are unsure about your child’s status or need guidance, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse.
Attention 5th Grade Parents & Guardians
As your child prepares to enter 6th grade, please note that the New Jersey Department of Health requires the following immunizations:
Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
Meningococcal vaccine
Documentation confirming these immunizations must be submitted to Mrs. Smith at RBS by August 31, 2026. If proof is not received by this date, your child may not be permitted to attend school until compliance is met.
We truly appreciate your attention to these matters and your continued partnership in keeping our students healthy, safe, and ready to thrive. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—we are happy to assist.
