From The Nurse
May 11-17 is Food Allergy Awareness Week. This is a time to educate and raise awareness about food allergies and how we can keep all students safe and included. Food allergies are the most common cause of anaphylaxis in schools. Roughly 1 in 13 children have food allergies. Martinson Elementary has 20 students with epipens for food allergies.
Seasonal Allergies: Many children are experiencing allergies triggered by pollen. Keep an eye out for symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and congestion. Allergic conjunctivitis also known as eye allergies is common. Eyes can become red, itchy, watery, may burn, and eyelids can become swollen. A daily antihistamine, eye drops such as Zaditor, cool cloth to the eyes, sunglasses when outside to protect eyes, and washing not only hands but clothing when coming in from outside are a few ways to try to help.
Healthy Eating: Encourage your child to maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Packing colorful and nutritious snacks like fruits, nuts, and yogurt can help sustain their energy levels throughout the day. Don't forget to emphasize the importance of staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Sun Safety: As the weather warms up, outdoor activities become more enticing. Remind your child to apply sunscreen before heading outside to protect against harmful UV rays. Encourage the use of hats and sunglasses for added protection, especially during peak sun hours.
Importance of Sleep: Ensure your child gets adequate sleep each night to support their physical and mental development. Establish a consistent bedtime routine and limit screen time before bed to promote better sleep quality.
If you have any concerns about your child's health, or illnesses that may occur during the school year, please notify the school nurse at 781-319-3985.
Remember, a healthy child is a happy and successful learner.
