Student Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures

We would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the proper drop-off/ pick-up procedures for your students at the High School. First thing, we want to make sure your students are safe. This will always be our #1 priority! This includes our security staff who our out directing traffic, rain or shine, to ensure your students’ safety, while also attempting to keep traffic flowing through the loop.

There has been an increase in student drivers to start the year each of the last few years and the lots will fill up quickly. This means A LOT of NEW drivers who may not be familiar with the traffic volume before/after school.

Parents———PLEASE use the drop-off loop off Seventh Street. Do not use the side streets to drop-off your student to walk across Seventh Street towards the school.

#1—— It is posted NO stopping, standing or parking during drop-off and pick-up times.

#2—— It is safer to get closer to the building. As we get closer to the start of the year it will be staying darker later, which means it will be harder to see students as they cross the street.

PLEASE NOTE—— For the traffic on Seventh Street and those trying to turn left from Washington St. onto Seventh Street, PLEASE try to alternate. Unless, of course, there are cars leaving the school preventing vehicles waiting to turn left from Washington onto Seventh Street. Although there is no stop sign on Seventh Street at Washington, the traffic on Seventh usually stops to let someone in. This keeps things from backing up too much on any one street at any point in time.

Please do NOT use the rear of the school or the BCPA Lot to drop-off —— This area will be blocked off with cones preventing cars from entering the drop-off line. Also, there is NOT a turnaround option in this lot. There are so many students and staff coming into and leaving the lot it creates an added hazard to all. The goal is to maintain ONE direction traffic into these lots as much as possible in an attempt to avoid any traffic collisions.

Every year, we hear about the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. PLEASE understand with 2000 plus students and staff packed into this building there is a lot of traffic around the school. We do the best we can to keep things moving as quickly as possible while still keeping all of our students and staff as safe as possible. If you are looking to avoid the congestion, here are a few things to look at:

#1—— Have your students ride the bus or car pool

#2—— Pull all the way up to the end of the sidewalk in front of BHS. This will maximize the amount of cars that can drop-off at one time (especially since all three doors on the front side of BHS are open for student entry each morning).

#3—— Plan to get to the high school before 7:10 am. If you get your student up and are arriving at BHS before 7:10 am, you can usually just drop-off and continue on your way without getting caught in a long line up.

For Pick-Up——— Make sure when you are lining up waiting to ONLY utilize the lane CLOSEST to BHS. The LEFT lane MUST be left OPEN for drive -thru traffic! Also, as the pick-up gets longer out to the road and down Seventh Street, you can park in the front parking lot and wait for your student there as well.

Morning Building Entrance Information

We have been receiving a few questions about building access and when students are able to enter the building in the morning and through which doors. As a result, we wanted to share the following information with you:

  • BHS doors unlock at 6 am. Students are able to enter the building at that point in time.
  • Students riding the bus will arrive at approximately 7 am over by the Athletic Department/Pool Doors.
  • Students entering the building in the morning (prior to 7:30 am) can enter through any of the three sets of doors on the front side of the building, through the BHS Cafeteria doors, the Athletic Department and Pool Doors, behind the building by Leith Lake, and by the Pooh's Corner loop. All other doors to BHS will remain shut and locked.
  • For safety and security reasons, students arriving after 7:30 am must enter the building through the Main Office doors. They should NOT be asking peers to let them in through any other doors when arriving late.

Morning Breakfast Information

As in the past, school breakfast will once again be free as long as students are taking a complete school breakfast as identified by food service guidelines and staff. A la carte items are still available for purchase at the student's expense. School breakfast items are available beginning at 7 am each day. The cafeteria space will be open for students prior to 7 am, but food/drink items will not be available for purchase prior to that point in time.

Updated Student Safety/Security Procedure at BHS

Starting this year, if you or your student enters the building after 7:30, you will notice a few minor updates to our building entry procedures designed to keep our students safe and our buildings secure. The process for entry is outlined below.

  • Anyone looking to enter the building after 7:30 will be required to use the buzzer and be buzzed into the vestibule area. This is no different than past practice. Students should have their Student ID out and visible in order to gain entry into the vestibule area. They may notice building security staff present to check their ID and greet them upon arrival. While this presence may be a change for the high school, it should be a familiar process for anyone who has entered one of our buildings serving younger grades during the school day.
  • Historically, once in the vestibule area, students/adults were able to immediately enter the office area as well as the building through the Main Office since the office door was open/unlocked. This door will now remain locked at all times. As a result, students/parents will need to be buzzed into the Main Office and then will have the ability to enter the building once checked in from there.
  • As a reminder, students should have their Student ID out ad visible in order to gain access to the building. Guests looking to enter the actual building via the Main Office should plan to bring their ID as well so that we can use it to check them in/out.

Open House Information - Tuesday, September 15th (Schedule Included)

As you are already aware, we will have Open House on Tuesday, September 15th from 6 pm to 8 pm. For those of you who are not familiar with Open House at BHS, this will be an opportunity for you to attend each of your student's classes and hear directly from their teachers about what their class will be like this year. The schedule for the night can be found here.

In order to help the night go smoothly for you, we would encourage you to come with your student's schedule so that you know which classes you are supposed to be in and when. BHS Administration and Teachers will be in the halls helping your navigate from one class to the next. We will also have students on site that will be able to help direct you as well.

Some of your student's teachers may not be in attendance on Tuesday night due to prior commitments (i.e. coaching obligations, unavoidable schedule conflicts, etc.). We will do our best to notify you of who thoe teachers will be in advance so that you can plan accordingly.

Sullivan's Message Assembly (All 10th and 12th Graders on Wednesday)

On Wednesday, September 16, all 10th and 12th grade students will attend a special grade-level presentation, “Sullivan’s Message,” during our Advisory scheduled class, which has been moved to AFTER lunch for this school year. Unfortunately, this means they will miss the first Advisory.

Students will report to the Fieldhouse for the presentation by 12:30 pm (the start of Advisory) and will be released to attend the final 30 minutes of 6th hour. The presentation is planned from 12:30-1:45 pm. We look forward to sharing this important message with them as it was a very impactful presentation last year!

Last Day for Schedule Changes - Friday, September 11th

As a reminder, the last day for schedule changes was Friday, September 11th unless the schedule change is a result of being misplaced in a class or there are significant extenuating circumstances. Please keep in mind that schedule changes for specific teacher requests, or having class/lunch with friends, are not schedule change requests that would constitute extenuating circumstances.

If you have a concern that you think may meet the criteria for a delayed approved schedule change, you should reach out to your student's grade level principal for further discussion.

Class T-Shirt Purchases - Please Order ASAP

If your student is interested in a Class T-Shirt for this year (new ones are designed each school year by that year's class council) we need them to do so ASAP. Our Class Advisors are preparing to submit their order so that we will receive them and be able to pass them out in advance of the Homecoming Assembly when each grade level will be wearing their Class T-shirts. If you are not sure if you have purchased a Class T-Shirt yet or not, you can check your ParentConnect Purchase History and see if a shirt is listed for this school year. As a reminder, Senior Class T-Shirts are included in a student's Senior Fee. You will still need to make this purchase online if you have not done so already, but will be looking for Senior Fee as opposed to Class of xxxx T-Shirt... Information on ordering can be found below:

1.
Log into your ParentConnect Account

2. Click on Accounts/SBA Tab

3. Click on Online SBA Payments (should be highlighted in yellow/upper right-hand corner)

Advisory Update

Advisory will be starting on Wednesday, September 16th.

We will use the first few weeks to focus on building connections and establishing Advisory as a meaningful and supportive time for students. The Advisory slides include several connection ideas and activities you can use with your students.

The purpose of Advisory is to provide students with opportunities for:

  • Peer-to-peer connections

  • Peer-to-adult connections

  • Academic support

  • A consistent time to check in, get organized, and ask for help

As in years' past, the first two weeks of Advisory will be a "No Travel" period. Beginning Wednesday, October 7, we will start allowing students to travel. At that point, students may travel to a teacher who is on their current schedule to:

  • Make up a test or quiz

  • Receive additional academic support

  • Get help with missing or challenging coursework

Until travel begins, students should remain with their assigned Advisory teacher and use this time to build relationships and establish routines.

  • Advisory Calender & Resources linked HERE
  • Advisory Bell Schedule linked HERE

Thank you for helping us make Advisory a valuable time for our students. The relationships and academic connections we build through this time can make a meaningful difference in helping students feel connected and supported at BHS.

Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy (Recent Legislation)

Background:

On February 10, 2026, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan legislative package, consisting of Senate Bill 495 and House Bill 4141, designed to minimize classroom distractions and improve student focus across Michigan schools. This new law mandates that all public school districts implement a formal policy prohibiting the use of personal wireless communication devices during instructional time, effective for the 2026-27 school year.

Luckily, Brighton High School put a cell phone policy into place several years ago, putting us ahead of the curve and setting us up for success in meeting this new legislation. Our policy is outlined in our BHS Student Handbook on page 50. Below is a summary of our policy and procedures.

Brighton High School Personal Device Policy and Procedures:

Brighton High School prioritizes a focused learning environment by having students "Pouch" their personal devices as they enter the classroom and during instructional time. This ensures consistency within all classrooms while maintaining student agency during specific and flexible times (before school, after school, during passing times, and during lunch). Every student will be provided with a school-issued device to ensure equitable access to digital curricular resources during instructional time.

Definitions:

  • Personal Electronic Devices: Includes, but is not limited to, internet-capable cellular phones, personal computers, iPads or tablets, smart watches, earbuds, headphones, and smart glasses.

  • “Pouch” your phone: At BHS, “pouching” your phone means to put it in the phone pocket on the wall as the student enters the classroom.

1. Classroom Expectations (The "Pouch" Standard):

  • Immediate Pouching: Upon entering any classroom, students are required to place their phones in the designated classroom pouch.

  • Wearables & Accessories: Smart watches must be stored in the student's backpack/bookbag or pouched, and earbuds must be removed from ears entirely and also must be stored or pouched.

  • Duration: Devices must remain in the pouch for the duration of the period. To ensure instructional consistency, mid-class "phone breaks" are not permitted.

2. Device Usage:

  • School-Issued Devices: BHS is equipped with student chromebooks in the classrooms to ensure equitable access to the digital curricular resources during instructional time.

  • Instructional Exceptions: Advisory and/or courses requiring specialized technology (e.g., Video Production, Yearbook, etc) may allow personal electronic device use to complete projects only with explicit principal/teacher approval.

3. BHS Student Handbook:

  • Discipline / Expectations Development: With this plan, students are required to follow the school policy and procedures. Progressive discipline will be utilized for infractions based on the steps outlined in the student handbook.

BHS Attendance Policy

As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:

Absences:

Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.

Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.

Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.

Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.

*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.

** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.

Tardies:

Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.

Thursday Academic Progress Update Emails

We will be continuing with our notification system implemented last year for students and parents, updating them both on academic progress when the student's grade falls below a 70% in any class. These notifications will go out once per week (on Thursdays to provide students with an opportunity to connect with teachers as needed prior to the weekend) and will include the following message. These notifications are designed to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that we are partnering and proactively working to support our students and their success at BHS! We are looking forward to this continued partnership for the upcoming school year.

Senior Yearbook Dates

Seniors at BHS typically submit a senior portrait for the yearbook in lieu of their ID photo. Portraits must be submitted to the yearbook no later than November 20 through our photo-sharing site at https://www.yearbooknerds.com/brighton-high-school. Guidelines for portraits are posted on the site (and also provided here). Parents who wish to order a yearbook or purchase a recognition ad for their senior may do so at the same site and can get a reduced price if they order early! The early deadline for senior recognition ads is November 30.

Seniors may opt to sign up for a Portraits by Alex session at the high school for a $50 fee. This session will include a portrait for submission to the yearbook only; digital images may be purchased for an additional fee directly from the photographer. Sessions are offered November 11-12 and may be reserved at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A45A4AA2AAAF94-63978728-class on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scholarship Opportunities

There are a number of local, state, and national scholarships that are shared with district personnel that we make every effort to share with our students and families as well. Some of these scholarships will be highlighted individually as they are brought to our attention or as they are in need of applicants. There are also scholarship search services for less local scholarships that we provide information on too. These include opportunities to increase access to different postsecondary options, not just college. A few of these resources are provided below as our students and families begin the search process.

Senior Questionnaire - Link Included

No matter what post-secondary option a student is considering, it is possible that they may require letters of recommendation that help them accomplish their post-secondary pursuits. One of the best tools to help in the receipt of high quality letters of recommendation is sharing the correct, important information with those who will be writing these letters. The Senor Questionnaire is one of the best ways to provide this information to building administration and counselors. A copy of student responses will be shared with the student, but we also have a digital copy that can be typed on or hand written on if that is preferred by the student and better meets their needs. Links to these resources are provided below:

Our students will be out in the community in the coming weeks sharing this information with them as well, but if you know of anyone who may be interested, feel free to share this information with them.

  • There are multiple different sponsorship levels, and information on each level can be found here.

Ruck to Live Event - Saturday, September 19th

Please see the message below from Veterans Connected:

On Saturday, September 19, Veterans Connected will host our 6th Annual Ruck to Live at the Brighton Veterans Memorial.

The event began within the veteran community, but its purpose reaches far beyond it.

Suicide doesn't discriminate. Our own communities have experienced the devastating loss of young people to suicide. Those losses affect classmates, teachers, coaches, friends, families, and entire schools. We believe our young people need opportunities to talk about mental health, learn to look out for one another, and understand that asking for help is a sign of strength.

That is why we are especially inviting our local schools to walk with us. Students, families, and staff can participate in either the 8-Mile Ruck or the Patriotic 1-Mile Walk. Throughout the 8-mile route, we will pause at each mile to honor the life of a veteran or civilian who died by suicide.

We are currently seeking eight veterans and eight civilians whose lives can be honored during this year's Ruck. If your school community or one of your families has lost someone to suicide and would like them remembered, we would be honored to walk in their memory.

Our intention isn't to define someone by how they died. We want to honor how they lived, walk alongside the people who loved them, and remind families and friends that they don't have to carry that grief alone. And as we walk, we want to start conversations about PTSD, mental health and suicide prevention that may help someone who is struggling today. That's what Together We Heal has always meant to Ruck to Live. Healing happens when we stop carrying difficult things alone.

We would greatly appreciate your help sharing this opportunity with your students, parents, teachers, counselors, coaches, teams, clubs and other school organizations. Walk as a team. Walk as a family. Walk in someone's memory. Or simply walk because you believe no one should struggle alone.

LACASA's Cinderella's Closet Returning September 17-20

LACASA is excited to share that Cinderella’s Closet is returning from September 17 – 20!

Homecoming season is right around the corner, and LACASA is once again opening the doors to Cinderella’s Closet, a pop-up boutique where local high school students can find stylish, gently loved formalwear at prices families can afford.

From September 17–20, students can shop $25 gowns, dresses, and suits, along with deeply discounted shoes and accessories to complete their Homecoming look. Every purchase also supports LACASA’s vital services for survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual violence.

More than a shopping event, Cinderella’s Closet creates a welcoming and uplifting experience where students are surrounded by encouraging messages, guidance for making healthy choices, and supportive adults who want every student to feel confident and celebrated.

“In a time when families continue to feel the strain of rising costs, Cinderella’s Closet helps ensure that Homecoming can be a special experience without becoming a financial burden,” said LACASA President and CEO Bobette Schrandt. “Every student deserves the opportunity to feel confident and celebrated. When students shop at Cinderella’s Closet, they’re not only finding something they love to wear - they’re also helping support hope and healing for children and families in our community.”

Donations are still needed to help stock Cinderella’s Closet. LACASA is especially in need of short dresses suitable for Homecoming, as well as other gently loved formalwear, shoes, and accessories. Community members can drop off donations at LACASA Collection’s Donation Station Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or contact Snedicor’s Green Earth Cleaners for pickup and cleaning services. Donated formalwear is given a second life, helping make Homecoming more affordable for local students while reducing textile waste.

Cinderella’s Closet is open to high school students only, and a valid student ID is required. A limited number of formalwear scholarships are available; students may inquire with staff or volunteers on site.

This year’s Homecoming pop-up boutique will be located at Kensington Valley Outlets, in a storefront just down from LACASA Collection, next to the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Outlet. As an added bonus, shoppers will receive a 25% off coupon for shoes and accessories at LACASA Collection to complete their look.

Volunteers are still needed to help set up, staff, and take down the boutique. Those interested can email Volunteering@lacasacenter.org.
