Foussat Language Academy

Week of November 2-6
Principal's Message
Dear Falcon Families!
It has been a joyful week on campus, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you for making Foussat such a welcoming place for our children. Seeing our students thrive each day is a true team effort between our staff and your families.
We want to extend a huge, heartfelt thank-you to our incredible PTA, staff, and volunteers for organizing our Trunk or Treat on October 22nd. We also want to thank all of our families for showing up in such full force—and for your wonderful patience as everyone waited in line to join the fun! Seeing our campus filled with incredible costumes and community spirit made it all worth it.
A big congratulations to our decorated trunk winners! Thank you to everyone who put so much creativity and effort into making the night magical for our kids.
TK/Kindergarten Halloween Parade: Our youngest Falcons did an incredible job showing off their costumes during our annual TK/Kindergarten Parade! A big thank-you to our TK/Kindergarten teachers for such a fun event, and to all the parents and families who came out to cheer on our students. It was wonderful seeing our campus filled with so much joy and community spirit!
Red Ribbon Week: Our students had a blast celebrating Red Ribbon Week! From our spirit dress-up days to classroom activities, everyone enjoyed learning about making healthy choices and taking care of themselves. Thank you for supporting our spirit dress-up days at home!
Upcoming Assessments – Grades K–2: Kindergarten through second-grade families, please check your email for important details regarding upcoming student assessments. If you did not receive the email, please get in touch with your child's teacher directly.
State Assessment Practice – Grades 3–5: This week, our upper-grade students will participate in practice state assessments. These practice runs help our students get comfortable with the testing format and online tools before spring testing. It's a great way to build their confidence and show what they know!
Lost and Found Reminder
Our Lost and Found is full! Please check the Lost and Found in front of the MPR for any missing jackets, sweaters, water bottles, or personal items. We will donate all unclaimed items to local charities by the end of the day on Monday, November 2. We encourage families to check for missing items before the donation date.
Foussat in the News! Our ABC news10 visit, thank you first grade students, teachers and support staff! Huge thanks to Mrs. Hauth for jumping in to set up the MPR for the ABC News 10 visit.
With gratitude,

For Safety of all our students and families, we ask that parents and guardians drive slowly and carefully through all parking areas and during student pick up and drop-off.
Volunteer Opportunity
We would love to have a parent volunteer to help with the crosswalk in front of school. We could use support in the morning from 7:45 - 8:15 a.m., at dismissal from 2:55 - 3:10 p.m., and from 12:25 - 12:45 p.m. on Wednesdays. Please let us know if you are interested.
Short-Term Independent Study
Short-Term Independent Study: Keep Learning When Your Student Is Absent
We understand that illness, bereavement, and unexpected circumstances sometimes keep students home from school. OUSD offers Short-Term Independent Study for eligible absences, allowing students to complete assigned work at home and stay connected to their learning.
Flexible options: Independent Study can be requested for as little as one day at a time, up to 15 days per school year.
Students with an IEP: A maximum of 10 days may be approved initially. The IEP Team must meet to consider any request for up to five additional days.
Requesting work in advance: Please submit your request at least five school days before the planned absence whenever possible.
Unexpected absences: You may also request Independent Study on the day of the absence, and we will provide the work as soon as possible.
Clearing the absence: When all assigned work is completed and returned within the specified timeframe, the absence can be cleared in accordance with district procedures.
Every minute of school matters! Missing just one school day means missing approximately 6 hours of learning. Missing 5 days adds up to about 30 hours, and 10 days means 60 hours of missed instruction. By the time a student misses 16 days, they have lost nearly 100 hours of learning and are considered chronically absent. Every minute in the classroom helps students stay connected, build skills, and succeed academically.
If your student needs Short-Term Independent Study, please contact your school office for information on how to submit a request.
OUSD Gradual Release of Artificial Intelligence by Grade Level
OUSD is preparing students to use AI thoughtfully and responsibly — not all at once, but grade by grade, with the right guardrails at every step to ensure students are prepared to be critical consumers and responsible users of AI.
Elementary (TK–5): Students do not have direct access to AI. Learning focuses on teacher-led demonstrations in TK–2 and hands-on, real-world activities in grades 3–5.
Middle School (6–8): Students begin using AI directly, learning to evaluate its answers and spot potential bias.
High School (9–12): Students actively use, design, and cite AI tools to prepare for college and future careers.
This gradual release model ensures our students become critical thinkers and responsible users of technology every step of the way.
Lost and Found
Our lost and found cart is getting full! Every Friday the cart will be placed in front of the office so that you can help your child locate any lost items. After the last Friday of the month, any items that are left will be donated.
Positive Behavior at Foussat
Building Positive Habits Together
Our students are doing a fantastic job practicing our school-wide expectations! To keep this positive momentum going, our scholars will be focusing on our SOAR habits as they learn how to navigate the school safely and respectfully.
Our SOAR Habits:
S - Safe
O - Outstanding
A - Accountable
R - Respectful
You can help support us at home by reminding your children to:
- Listen actively and respectfully during group learning. For TK-2, this means sitting nicely on the carpet. For 3rd-5th, this means giving their full attention to the speaker and respecting peers during group discussions
- Walk safely, face forward, and stay with your group when moving through the hallways.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping our students SOAR every day!
Red Ribbon Week Drawing Contest Winners!
SOAR Shout-Outs!🎉
Each week, our teachers shout-out a student who has been Safe, Outstanding, Accountable, and Respectful! We read the Shout-Outs after students from the SOAR Leaders lead the Pledge of Allegiance in English and Spanish.

🚗 Morning Arrival - Car Drop-Off & Pick-Up
For Safety of all our students and families, we ask that parents and guardians drive slowly and carefully through all parking areas and during student pick up and drop-off.
🕗 School arrival is between 7:45–8:15 AM.
Students should arrive on campus during this time and go directly to their designated area.
For everyone's safety, students are expected to follow all school rules and safety expectations while traveling to and from school.
Please help us keep our arrival and dismissal process moving safely and efficiently.
When dropping off or picking up by car:
- 🚘 Use the right lane for student drop-off and pick-up.
- ➡️ Drive forward as far as possible before your child exits or enters the vehicle.
- 🚪 Students should enter or exit the vehicle quickly through a right-side door.
- 🛑 Drivers must remain in their vehicles during drop-off and pick-up.
- 🚶 Please use sidewalks and crosswalks and remind your children to do the same.
- All TK and Kindergarten students should continue to be walked to the primary gate everyday, unless they are with older siblings. Children need to be able to independently exit and enter the car.
All individuals who pick up students before or after dismissal MUST:
- park in a parking space before coming into the office
- be an authorized contact in AERIES
- show identification
- sign out the student
To help ensure a safe and smooth dismissal, please pick up your child at the same designated location each day. If your child's dismissal routine changes, please notify the teacher and/or school office by email or in writing before school begins so staff can make the necessary arrangements.
Social and Emotional Well-Being
Move This World
Last semester, Foussat had the opportunity to pilot a new classroom social-emotional learning curriculum called Move This World. This year, the program is being used at every OUSD elementary school. You can practice these social-emotional skills with your child at home by taking advantage of the family account!

Previous Reminders
There is much more information available to support you throughout the school year. We have attached our Parent/Guardian Handbook (English) on which serve as a helpful reference for school policies, procedures, programs, and supports.
The handbook includes information about school hours and calendars, arrival and dismissal, attendance, health services, communication, behavior expectations, student supports, dress code, visitors and volunteers, field trips, electronic devices, and more. We encourage families to review the handbook and keep it available as a resource throughout the year.
We know there is a lot of information to take in at the beginning of the year, so we will continue to share important reminders throughout the school year. For now, please focus on the arrival and safety procedures shared in this newsletter, and use the Parent/Guardian Handbook as your go-to resource for additional information.
Safety Tips for Pedestrians and Bicyclists
Arrival & Dismissal Safety
Please follow all posted signs and staff directions during pick-up and drop-off. Use designated lanes, avoid double parking, and stay alert for students crossing. Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe. Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety
- Use marked crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bicycle or e-bike.
- Ride with traffic, obey signs and signals, and use lights or reflective gear when visibility is low.
- Drivers should watch for pedestrians and cyclists, yield when required, and allow safe passing distance.
E-Bike Safety
All OUSD students who plan to ride and park an E-Bike on any district campus will need to go through the free E-Bike process. This helps promote safe biking habits and ensures students are prepared to ride responsibly to and from school and school-sponsored events.
Please note: Only middle and high school students will receive a permit sticker to park their E-Bike on campus.
Steps to follow:
Complete a liability waiver- completed in data confirmation
Take the OUSD-approved E-Bike Safety Course (CHP Online Certification)
Submit the Online Bicycle Permit Application with a parent or guardian
(Recommended) Register the E-Bike for free on Project 529 in case it is lost or stolen.
E-Bike Safety (AB 544):
New Requirement: All E-bikes are now required to have a red reflector or red rear light (solid or flashing) visible from 500 feet at all times.
Thank you for supporting student safety in our school community!
