Scandia Scoop #7
Good Afternoon Scandia Families,
We had an excellent first night of conferences last night and look forward to seeing families again for our second night on Tuesday and our full day of conferences on Wednesday! The Scholastic Book Fair will also be open both Tuesday and Wednesday. Additionally, thank you to our PTO and families for providing dinner for our teachers on conference night!
A quick reminder: There is no school for elementary students on Wednesday (10/14). Middle and high school students will have school that day.
As the seasons change and the weather gets cooler, please be sure your child comes to school with a warm hoodie or jacket for recess. We are looking forward to enjoying plenty of sunny days on the playground, and we want to make sure everyone stays warm while they play!
Enjoy your weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday!
Take care and be safe,
Shannon Carufel
Principal

Minnesota Indigenous Peoples’ Day & Federal Columbus Day
On Monday, as required by the State of Minnesota to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, students will spend time learning about the culture and traditions of our local Indigenous people. As part of the lesson, students will read the following books:
Preschool text: Mnoomin maan’gowing: The Gift of Mnoomin by Brittany Luby
Kindergarten text: I am Not Costume by Maria Des Jarlait
1st grade text: Stitches of Tradition by Marcie Rendon
2nd grade text: This Land by Ashley Fairbanks
3rd grade text: Mashkiki Road by Elizabeth S. Barrett
4th grade text: Where We Come From by Diane Wilson, Sun Yung Shin, Shannon Gibney, John Cox
5th grade text: Napesni Renegade: A Bison's Journey by Marcie Rendon
These books highlight the values and perspectives of Indigenous cultures. In addition to the reading, students will explore Indigenous artwork designs and beading.
A note about holiday lessons: In school, we typically recognize or learn about holidays when they relate to our curriculum and lesson plans. For certain holidays, like Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we are required by the State of Minnesota to teach lessons to students on the actual date of the holiday, or at times, sometime during that week. Veterans Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day are two other examples of holidays with this requirement.
