From the Desk of the Superintendent

Dear Highlander Charter School Community,

As we step into the vibrant season of spring, with longer daylight and warmer weather, the symbolism of growth, renewal and reflection continues to be my approach as we embark on this new chapter of Highlander.

Over the last few months I have had the opportunity to meet with approximately 97 members of the Highlander community to include, board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, students, families and community partners. These meetings reflect the way in which I plan to lead. I am a strong believer that decisions must be made by listening and learning from those closest to the work.

My goal for the remainder of the year is to prioritize and amplify the voices of more families, caretakers, and students. As a parent of a Highlander student myself, I can not emphasize the importance of parent voice. It is crucial that as we plan for the upcoming school year, we capture parent feedback to drive our direction forward. To facilitate this, I will be hosting informal sessions after school hours (3-5pm) on the following days for families to stop by, share their insight and learn ways to stay involved:

  • Thursday, May 16th

  • Thursday, May 23

  • Thursday, May 30th

If you plan to attend any of the days above, please feel free to message me directly on class dojo, or email me at ssthomas@hc.school to let me know if translation services will be needed. Additionally, I will be sending out a family survey via class dojo over the next few weeks to ensure we are providing multiple opportunities for families to engage.

As we countdown the final 7 weeks of the year I want to express gratitude and celebration to our incredible teachers for all they do, especially as we close out Teacher Appreciation Week. I appreciate the generosity of all families and the effort that went into ensuring our teachers felt our sincere love and gratitude.

These are indeed exciting times for our school, with important events underway to ensure a positive conclusion to the school year. Please stay informed by checking your child’s Dojo for details on the exciting celebrations taking place on both campuses. I look forward to meeting with many more of you over the next few weeks.

In partnership,

Simona Simpson-Thomas

Superintendent

Highlander Receives TerraCorps and AmeriCorps Grants for Next Year!

Highlander in Providence has received a grant to support bringing on AmeriCorps members to work in our classrooms alongside teachers and in our afterschool program. This grant not only provides valuable support to the school, the member receives up to $7,000 in an education award upon completion of a year of service. This can be used for tuition or to pay student loans. We are also able to request some of these positions to be part-time but the education award would be prorated in that case.

Highlander in Warren received a grant to bring on a new TerraCorps member to pick up the great work our current TerraCorps member, Maddie Sowinski, has done in developing our hydroponics system and gardens. TerraCorps members receive the same benefits as AmeriCorps, including the education award.

Please be on the look out for these opportunities as we welcome our community to apply!

Did you know Highlander has many staff who began here as AmeriCorps members? They include Tatiana Iezzi, Ate Hernandez, Helena Johns, Alenoush Hagopian, and more!
