2026 Back to School Principals Letter 2026 Back to School Principals Letter

As we look towards the first day of school on Monday, August 24, 202, our team is looking forward to another great year of achievements not only in the MVHS classrooms, but also among our athletic teams, within our fine and performing arts programs, and at the Edison Academies.

Major Pride was evident in everything we do and will continue to drive our school programs throughout this upcoming 2026-2027 school year and beyond. We are so thankful for our amazing Mount Vernon High School staff, our students and the incredible home-school partnerships we have with our families.

Mount Vernon students represent over 50 different countries and speak more than 30 languages. We are a true fellowship where over 60% of us are current or former multi-lingual learners and have over 300 military-connected families. We are a melting pot of cultural traditions, and each year we come together to celebrate the deep-rooted pride of our Mount Vernon community.

  • HERE is the link to the 2026 Welcome Back Principal's Letter.

Have a great rest of your summer Majors - and thank you for your support! We are excited to see all our amazing students later this month!

Students and families -

As we strive to create the safest, most supportive, and focused learning environment possible for our students, we are reaching out to share an important policy update regarding campus meals.

This school year, ALL external food delivery services (such as DoorDash, UberEats, Grubhub, and local restaurants) will no longer be permitted or accepted on campus.

Why We Are Making This Change:

  • Enhanced Campus Safety: Limiting non-school personnel and unscheduled deliveries on school grounds helps our team maintain a secure environment throughout the day.

  • Uninterrupted Learning: Minimizing classroom disruptions caused by delivery alerts and drop-offs ensures our students can stay focused on their studies and activities.

  • Equal & Healthy Access: Our school nutrition team works hard every day to prepare balanced, delicious meal options that meet all dietary standards for our growing students.

What This Means for Students & Families:

  • Packed Lunches Welcome: Students are always welcome and encouraged to bring a healthy meal or snack from home.

  • Delicious Campus Meals: Our school cafeteria remains ready to serve fresh, nutritious breakfast and lunch options every day.

  • Forgotten Lunches: If a student accidentally leaves their packed lunch at home, a parent or guardian may still drop it off at the main front office.

We deeply appreciate your partnership, understanding, and cooperation as we implement this change to keep our school safe, focused, and healthy.

If you have any questions or unique dietary needs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our administration team!

Cellphones OFF and AWAY During School from 8:10a to 2:55p Cellphones OFF and AWAY During School from 8:10a to 2:55p

No More Lunchtime Use Permitted No More Lunchtime Use Permitted

Please see the VERY IMPORTANT new Cellphone policy in FCPS for NEXT school year. We will continue to educate our students on this new expectation:

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1st, 2026

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cell phone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell (8:10 am to 2:55 pm).

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.

More details are available on the FCPS Cell Phone Policy webpage.

NOTE: As outlined in the new SR&R regulations, ALL students are expected to follow the established policy and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). Students who do not comply will face consequences outlined in the SR&R.

Why it is important for students to attend school each and every day! Why it is important for students to attend school each and every day!

Good attendance will help your children do well in high school, college, and at work.

  • Your children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it.

  • Some absences are unavoidable. We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. The important thing is to get your children to school as often as possible.

  • Sporadic absences, not just those on consecutive days of school, matter. Before you know it – just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.

  • If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.

  • By middle and high school, chronic absence is a leading warning sign that a student will drop out.

  • Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, creating churn and slowing down instruction.

  • Families should avoid extended vacations that require your children to miss school. Try to line up vacations with the school’s schedule. The same goes for doctor’s appointments.

  • For older children, you can help them develop homework and bedtime routines that allow for 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours of sleep. Make sure that when the lights go out, so do the cell phones, video games, and computers.

  • Get to know the teachers and administrators. With younger children, make sure you introduce your child to teachers before school starts and keep in touch with the teachers. For older students, school officials can help you stay on top of academic progress and social contacts to make sure your child is staying on track.

  • Above all, set an example for your child. Show him or her that attendance matters to you and that you won’t allow an absence unless someone is truly sick. Avoid asking older students to help with daycare and household errands.

  • You can turn to the school for help. Many schools offer services for the whole family.

  • Seek help from the school or community if you are facing tough challenges related to access to health care, unstable housing, poor transportation, or lack of food. More schools and community agencies are working together to offer help for the whole family.

** Immunization Requirements for Students ** ** Immunization Requirements for Students **

The Code of Virginia § 22.1-271.2 requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases in order to attend Fairfax County Public Schools. Immunizations keep children and the community protected from vaccine preventable diseases.

In collaboration with our partners at the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD), FCPS leadership will continue with the exclusion process reinstated during SY 2025-26.

All students who do not meet immunization requirements or who have not updated their status after the 90-day conditional enrollment period has ended. This exclusion process will continue during Fall 2026.

Prior to the start of school on Monday, August 24, students will need to submit immunization documentation. If they have an appointment to receive their required immunizations after August 24, they will need to submit an Immunization Action Plan to confirm the appointment.

  • Students are required to have certain immunizations to attend school in Virginia.

  • Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Notice 2101, Regulation 2101, and Regulation 2107 support this requirement.

  • Newly enrolled students must have a minimum of at least one of each of the required immunizations in order to be conditionally enrolled. As part of the conditional enrollment process, each student with missing immunizations should have an Immunization Action Plan (IAP) on file and noted in the Student Information System (SIS).

  • Returning FCPS students that have immunization requirements that are not complete by the first day of school, August 24, may start school with a valid, in-progress Immunization Action Plan (IAP). Guidance on entering the IAP for families can be found on the FCPS How to Submit Immunization Documents.

  • Conditionally enrolled students are required to have an Immunization Action Plan (IAP). In alignment with the Code of VA, families must have a completion plan for receiving the required immunizations. The Immunization Action Plan will be noted in the Student Information System (SIS). Guidance for Entering Immunization Action Plan Information is available on Atlas for school staff.

  • We encourage parents/caregivers to check with their family healthcare provider now to ensure their child is up to date with their required immunizations.

  • We thank all of our families for supporting our students’ health and well-being.

Guidance for Families

  • Parents/caregivers may check their child’s immunization compliance by accessing SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers may visit the FCPS How to Submit Immunization Documentation webpage for instructions to check their child’s immunization record and submit the required documents.

  • Free immunization clinics and health fairs are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage.

  • Families of students with incomplete immunization records will need to provide acceptable immunization documentation to their child's school as soon as possible but before Monday, August 24.

  • Acceptable Immunization Documentation includes:

    • Immunization Record: An updated immunization record showing that the child has received the required immunizations. This record must include the dates the immunizations were received including the month, day, and year.

    • Statement from a healthcare provider:

      • A written statement from a health care provider specifying all administered immunizations.

      • A health care provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.

    • A notarized Religious Exemption Form objecting the administration of immunizations on the grounds this conflicts with his or her religious tenets or practices.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will be taking place at designated FCPS locations throughout the school year. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

** New Student ID Cards Coming for Bus Riders This Fall ** ** New Student ID Cards Coming for Bus Riders This Fall **

Overview

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, FCPS is launching a modernized transportation system designed to improve student safety, communication with families, and operational efficiency.

This initiative includes three key components: new student ID cards, upgraded bus driver tablets, and a new family bus app.

Key Messages

  • As part of the ongoing commitment to strengthening layered safety and security programs, FCPS will implement a new student ID system for students who ride our school buses.

  • The implementation of the student IDs is designed as an additional safety measure for our 130,000 students who ride the bus each day, ensuring they are on the right bus and that they get on and off at the correct bus stop, as well as making sure only authorized students are on our buses.

  • The IDs will be provided to students who ride the bus. Those students will be expected to tap on and tap off the bus.

  • Student IDs do not track student movement. The only information available is when a student taps on or off a bus. Much like our Here Comes the Bus app, our new app will allow parents/guardians to track the progress of the school bus.

  • It is possible that the ID program will expand in the future to include uses such as library cards and meal payment.

Fast Facts

How the Student ID Cards Work:

  • Students who ride the bus will tap their ID card when boarding and exiting the bus. “Tap on, Tap off.”

  • These taps allow the transportation system to know which students are riding a particular bus at a given time.

  • The system tracks the location of the school bus — not the student's individual location.

  • If a student forgets or loses their card, bus drivers can manually check them in and out using their tablet so students can still ride.

Why We're Making This Change:

    • FCPS operates one of the largest public school transportation systems in the nation.

    • These updates provide better tools to support students, families, bus drivers, schools, and transportation staff.

    • The goal is to make school transportation safer, more connected, and more reliable.

If a Student Loses Their ID

  • Students can continue riding the bus while a replacement card is issued.

  • Bus drivers can manually check students in and out.

  • Families should contact their child's school as soon as possible to request a replacement ID card.

** Weapons Screening at ALL Varsity Football Games This 26-27 SY ** ** Weapons Screening at ALL Varsity Football Games This 26-27 SY **

Overview

FCPS will continue expansion of weapons detection systems by utilizing them at all varsity football games this fall.

Main Points

  • Fairfax County Public Schools remain committed to creating secure and welcoming environments where students, staff, and families can focus on learning, teaching, and supporting one another.

  • Even with layered safety plans already in place, FCPS continually reviews and strengthens its safety practices by exploring new resources, technologies, and operational best practices.

  • As part of that ongoing work, FCPS will begin weapons screening of spectators at all varsity football games this season. The division will use its existing screening equipment, which can be moved efficiently to individual stadiums as needed.

  • Because athletic events differ from the instructional day, screening at football games can be implemented more efficiently, as spectators typically arrive with fewer personal items.

  • The scanners are more sensitive than traditional metal detectors - more accurately identifying metal sources that may be potentially harmful rather than sounding an alarm for all types of metal, such as coins.

  • OpenGate does not use facial recognition and does not collect any personal identifying information.

Important Reminders

To help provide a safe and enjoyable experience and to expedite entrance into FCPS athletic events, students, family members, and all spectators are reminded that the following items are prohibited:

  • Backpacks

  • Purse

  • Fanny pack

  • Tote bags

  • Outside food and beverage

  • Sporting equipment (balls, bats, sticks, etc.)

  • Any item prohibited by FCPS policy, or determined by event staff to present safety concerns

Approved bags are limited to:

  • Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags no larger than 12”x6”x12”

  • Small clutch bag no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”

  • Medical and diaper bags permitted but subject to inspection

Middle school students and younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult who remains with the student(s) at the event.

These additional measures reflect FCPS’s commitment to taking a proactive, coordinated approach to safety at school athletic events. Our goal is to support secure, well-managed events that allow students, staff, and families to enjoy the excitement of Friday night football.

ParentVUE and StudentVUE Sign-in Changes Beginning July 28 ParentVUE and StudentVUE Sign-in Changes Beginning July 28

Beginning July 28, FCPS will ask parents and students to install the new ParentVUE and StudentVUE apps.

The current (classic) apps will remain available for approximately six months to support the transition. During this time, the classic apps will keep prompting users to upgrade to the new apps.

The new login screen for both apps will display User Name and Password fields, with a Login FCPS SSO button below them. Using the Login FCPS SSO provides a more secure sign-in experience.

  • Students will continue to use their existing FCPS username and password.

Please share the following resources with families for instructions on installing the new apps and details about the updated login experience:

  • ParentVUE Mobile App
  • StudentVUE Mobile App

Support: Parents needing assistance should submit a Parent Support Request.

Please help me in welcoming our new Assistant Principal Mrs. Shastin Willman to our MVHS community!

Mrs. Willman will be supervising our Math and World Languages Departments this upcoming school year, as well as supporting our students with the last names A to COL, and our Multi-Language Learners in levels 1-4.

Mrs. Willman is excited to join the Mount Vernon community as a Major and begin this new chapter after relocating from Oklahoma to the District. She brings eight years of experience as a secondary mathematics teacher and two years as an assistant principal, along with both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Oklahoma. Throughout her career, she has been passionate about supporting student achievement, building strong relationships, and fostering positive school cultures where everyone can thrive.

In addition to teaching mathematics, Mrs. Willman coached athletics throughout her years in the classroom and served as Assistant Athletic Director during her final year of teaching. She believes every student and educator deserves someone in their corner and is dedicated to being a cheerleader for both students and teachers as they pursue their goals and reach their full potential. Her commitment to educational excellence has been recognized through a feature in Principal Leadership magazine. Outside of education, Mrs. Willman has owned and operated a successful photography business, combining her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Mrs. Willman looks forward to partnering with students, families, and staff to celebrate successes, overcome challenges, and make a lasting impact together as a Mount Vernon Major.

Please help me in welcoming our new Director of Student Activities (DSA) Mr. John Uccellini to our MVHS community! Many of you know John from his former role as the Assistant Director of Student Activities (ADSA) at MVHS for the past three years.

John Michael Uccellini is excited to begin as the new Director of Student Activities at Mount Vernon High School. Mr. Uccellini is a native of Indiana Pennsylvania, a 2011 graduate of Robert Morris University and a 2025 graduate of American College of Education. He brings eight years of experience in the classroom as a Math and Social Studies teacher, and three years of experience as the Assistant Director of Student Activities all at Mount Vernon. In addition to his educational experience, he brings 15 years of Track and Field Coaching experience including 9 years as the Head Track and Field Coach at Mount Vernon. Mr. Uccellini brings a passion for student activities believing all students have the opportunity to grow, challenge themselves, and find success. Much like Ted Lasso Mr. Uccellini believes success is not about the wins and losses. It’s about helping students be the best version of themselves on and off the field. He is looking forward to continuing to share his passion for high school athletics and extracurriculars with the Mount Vernon community.

Request to Expunge High School Courses taken in Middle School Request to Expunge High School Courses taken in Middle School

Dear parents/guardians,

For high school course work taken during middle school, parents may request that a student's high school mathematics, world language, or ESOL course be expunged after the completion of the school year. The “Request to Expunge High School Courses taken in Middle School” form must be submitted to the student's school counselor before the beginning of the second quarter of the next school year.

Once the school receives the written request form to expunge the grade, the high school director of student services will complete the process to completely remove the course from the student's transcript.

• Once expunged, a course cannot be reinstated.

• Once a course and grade are removed there will be no evidence on the transcript that the course was ever taken and no reason why the grade was expunged.

• When a course with an associated SOL is expunged from the academic record, any verified credit earned will not be applied towards high school graduation requirements unless the student retakes the expunged course and earns a passing grade.

• When parents request a student's grade be expunged, the credit is also expunged. This will affect the number of credits (and verified credits) required for graduation. For example, if a student in 7th grade expunges an Algebra 1 Honors course and in 8th grade expunges a Geometry Honors course, the student will no longer be eligible for an Advanced Studies Diploma unless one of the courses is repeated.

The Request to Expunge High School Courses in Middle School can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is104.pdf
