Staff Shout Outs
MS. DAVIS!
We are so happy to have you as apart of our Woods Lake team, and you have transitioned smoothly into the child accountant secretary. Thank you for your tremendous help in the school office. Your hard work and diligence in completing office tasks ensure that our students, staff, families, and community partners feel welcomed and supported. You are truly a team player, and your efforts do not go unnoticed. Thank you for all that you do!
MS. MANDY!
Thank you for your outstanding leadership during lunch and recess. Your efforts to ensure that all students feel safe and included truly make a difference in their school experience. We also appreciate your flexibility throughout the school day and your willingness to support teachers in the classrooms. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and it positively impacts our entire school community.
MS. TUFANO!
Your implementation of school-wide Reading Competitions has sparked excitement among the students, and many are eager to showcase their book reports is impressive. You are encouraging our students to read in such an engaging way, and it makes a significant difference in their enthusiasm for literature. Thank you for your very creative bulletin boards and seasonal library decor; they are truly enlightening.
Attendance Counts
As of February 9th, 2025, our school has a chronic absenteeism percentage of 34%, which is gradually rising. As the school year progresses, we are concerned that students may miss even more school.
Our goal is to improve attendance, and I would appreciate your thoughts on how we can motivate our families. How can we effectively communicate the impact of attendance on student achievement? It would be beneficial for us to brainstorm ideas on how to encourage parents and guardians to ensure their children are present in school, except when they are sick.
Behavior is Communication
Great Progress in Behavior Data!
Give yourself a round of applause! The behavior data has improved compared to last year, which is a testament to your hard work and consistency with our school-wide behavior expectations. Several teachers have students, who's behavior have improved significantly! Please continue to reinforce our ARTS expectations. Our students need reminders, and that is okay.
If you have a student(s) that may need a BIP (Behavior Individualized Plan) or their plan revised, please reach out to the behavior team or put your student on the Child Study Team. BIPs help us to collect data to support students.
As staff, let’s focus on our students walking in the hallway following the ARTS. This remains important with WIDA and MSTEP testing approaching. We want our students to have consideration for one another and their learning environment. If students struggle with this expectation, please have them practice walking silently in the hallway.
As a team, we should support one another in ensuring students follow hallway expectations, even if they are not in your homeroom roster.
Thank you for your dedication!
Behavior Data
Take a look at the three pdfs below. What does the data show? What strategies can we implement based on our data to continue to improve the behavior data?
Our data show that inappropriate physical contact is our top incident. MagicSchool can be used as a tool to create social stories for unwanted behaviors. Please click on the link below to customize a social story for your entire class, small group of students, and/or specific student to reinforce expected behaviors.
WOW ART SLIPS Revisions
Many teachers have expressed concerns with their class not receiving any WOW slips for weeks. To ensure that each grade level is reached, we will assign a grade level to focus your attention to for the week. Remember, you should only give two WOW ART Slips out a week. Click on the link to mke copies of our WOW slips. There are some located in the mailroom as well.
Some staff are confusing the WOW slips and Artie slips. You can give as many of our orignal Artie slips as you want to any student. Those slips can be used for your own classroom incentives and our school-wide ARTIE store at the end of each trimester. Students can purchase items from our school store with their artie slips. The items range from prizes of 1 artie slip to 150 artie slips!
Teachers should not write number values on the artie slips. Only the Red Hot Artie slip has a higher value.
Revisions (Please do not share this with your students. This will encourage them to follow the ARTS in all areas):
Kindergarten teachers give WOW slips to two fifth grade students.
First grade teachers give WOW slips to two fourth grade students (This includes Mr. Osborn's class).
Second grade teachers gives WOW slips to two third grade students.
Third grade teachers gives WOW slips to two second grade students.
Fourth grade teachers (including Mr. Osborn) gives WOW slips to two first grade students.
Fifth grade teachers gives WOW slips to two kindergarten students.

Curriculum Matters
Active Student Engagement
We have completed our second Instructional Rounds for the school year. Our last round will take place in a few months, with a continued focus on Active Student Engagement.
Our goal is to ensure that students are fully engaged during your instructional lessons. This means encouraging students to do most of the talking and providing in-depth answers rather than simple choral responses. It is essential that materials from the district-approved curriculum are in students' hands for the majority of the lesson. As students engage in dialogue and interact with materials like workbooks, math manipulatives, and science tools, teachers should actively monitor their engagement by moving around the classroom.
Throughout this school year, we have observed some amazing practices in our classrooms. However, there is still work to be done, as reflected in our testing scores. It’s crucial for our students to feel comfortable completing instructional tasks independently. If you need support in guiding your students, please reach out to your colleagues or administration. We are a team, and working together is key to improving our academic performance.
This video shows middle school students engaged in conversation. However, this strategie can easily be modified to get our elementary students to utilize "Talk Moves".
