AES Safety Committee
Antrim Elementary School has a very dedicated and active Safety Committee. We meet monthly and usually have the town’s Emergency Management Director Marshall Gale as well as representation from the Antrim Police Department in attendance. We work collaboratively with the Great Brook School principal and staff as well.
The state requires each school to complete 10 drills each year; 6 evacuation drills and 4 all purpose drills. Today, AES completed a Drop, Cover, and Hold Drill as our eighth drill.
The state has many resources available dealing with Emergency Management and Fire Safety. One resource that has a great deal of information for residents is www.ReadyNH.gov
Total solar Eclipse - April 8th
On April 8, 2024, a Total Solar Eclipse will darken New Hampshire's skies in one of nature's most awe-inspiring shows. For 3 minutes and 15 seconds, skies will dim, temperatures will drop, and the country will pause to watch as the Moon passes over the light of the Sun, completely blocking its light.
This event will be a massive opportunity for New Hampshire’s tourism industry. Northern New Hampshire will be in the eclipse’s Path of Totality, which offers viewers the most dramatic view of the eclipse. An influx of visitors will travel to the state in the hopes of getting this once-in-a-lifetime view of the sky. The last time New Hampshire was in the direct path of a Solar Eclipse was in 1959, and the next won’t be until 2079.
While Antrim is not in the path of totality by scientific definition, parts of northern New Hampshire are and in Antrim it will appear that way to us. Just after 2:00PM the eclipse will begin and continue through 4:30PM. We will experience nearly complete darkness leading up to and just after dismissal. At the website eclipse2024.org,on the Antrim Station, you can view a simulation of the eclipse.
The district has purchased solar eclipse glasses for all students and staff for the day of the eclipse and the school will be engaged in learning activities about the eclipse days leading up to and during the day of the eclipse.

In First Friends 1, we’ve been enjoying weather stories, songs, and projects about clouds and rain. We’re exploring rainbows and wind, as well. We had fun making and testing our special wind sock creations! We also started making straw paintings using our own “wind” power.
In First Friends 2 we completed our Mat Man unit. We sang his song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvphUKrDobc) and put him together using lines and curves. We practiced drawing him and making him using paper that we hung up in the classroom
Kindergarten
Our CVHS principal, Ms. McKillop, came to read to us too as a mystery reader!
Read Across America Week
1st grade
First grade has been working on place value. Here is a picture of our final project. We’ve also been able to rearrange our literacy block and we are now working in a center based rotation in our classroom. We all love it!
They are also gaining literacy skills every day. They are practicing new vocabulary, word work and decomposing numbers. They are knocking our socks off!!

Grade 2
This week, the second graders read “The Night Before Saint Patrick's Day” which is about children who create Leprechaun traps to find gold! The students worked with a partner to develop a written plan on how to create the best Leprechaun trap. They spent their free time creating their traps! Hopefully, we collect some gold!
In math, we sorted out all of the marshmallows in a box of Lucky Charms and graphed the amount of each marshmallow. And… we were able to enjoy the yummy marshmallows after we graphed our data!
Great work, Second Grade!

Wellness
In Wellness this week, we have been working on our Paddle Racket Skills. This allows students to practice their hand-eye coordination and to master the skills necessary to hit a ball or other objects accurately. We used foam balls and Birdies, this week!
Grade 3
CRAZY 8s
MuzArt
Congrats to the fourth graders who sang in the district concert on Tuesday night! We are so proud of you!!
This week we started our fiber arts unit! Kindergarten students made sleepy self portraits, weaving a paper blanket for themselves. First grade used strips of water color paintings made by their classmates to create a weaving. Second graders used yarn to make rainbows to hang at home and fourth graders created a textured picture with yarn.
District Wide Concert - 4th graders
Library
The library has been busy this week. Second graders are learning about how maple syrup is made. We tasted real maple syrup and pancake syrup to see which one we liked better. To celebrate “Read Across America” students have been listening to many different Dr. Seuss books.
Community Meeting
At our last community meeting Matthew Conti and Zoey Clark were the hosts of the hour. The Kindergarteners presented their writing about seasons and their birthdays.
Grade 4
Students in Mrs. Beaumont’s class read an interesting article about how roller coasters work! We used close reading strategies to understand the text at a deeper level. To celebrate our hard work we rode some virtual roller coasters!
Students in Miss. Gilbert’s class have been working hard in math! We have learned how to compare fractions and find equivalent fractions. Our newest skill is adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. Ask your 4th grader to show you their skills!
Fourth grade classrooms were also visited by two mystery readers! Thank you for sharing your stories with us!

Recent classroom lessons in all grades have focused on problem solving steps:
Say the Problem Without Blame
Think of Possible Solutions
Explore Outcomes
Pick the Best Solution.
Future lessons in Kindergarten will focus on recognizing and responding to bullying and other types of mean behavior. This week the third grade learned about cyberbullying and the importance of internet safety. There have been some conversations and questions in the third grade about safe and respectful internet use. The students were reminded not to share any personal information online and also learned, after they press “send” the information is permanently ‘in the cloud” even if they delete it from their personal device(s).
Future classroom lessons in all of the grades will include career awareness, a review of strategies for emotional self-regulation, and, a bit later in the year, preparing for and dealing with change. As always, I welcome questions and communications from you, the families of our AES students. rgregg@conval.edu
