The NEED Academy Edition
October 19-23, 2026: GRADE 5 NEED ACADEMY UPDATES
Dear WES Families,
WES Waves Take on the NEED Academy!
Well, it has been 24 hours since our WES Waves fifth graders loaded up for their weeklong adventure at the NEED Academy! Throughout the day, Ms. Wolf and Mr. Pursel reported back on a successful first day as students participated in hikes and explored the area surrounding the historic Coast Guard Station.
Last evening, I had the opportunity to join the adventure, arriving just in time to catch the tail end of dessert. From there, I watched students listen to instructions, work together, and take responsibility for cleaning up their space before diving into an evening lesson on nocturnal adaptations. The focus? Owls!
With several taxidermized owls on hand, students were captivated as they learned about these fascinating nighttime hunters and their specialized adaptations. But at NEED, the learning doesn't stop when the sun goes down!
Armed with flashlights, students headed outside to play a game of “Don't Get Caught by the Owl!” Using their flashlights to simulate the challenge of navigating the night, students put their new learning into action while trying to avoid being spotted by their fellow classmates playing the role of owls. It was the perfect combination of science, exploration, teamwork, and pure joy, all happening well into the night!
Amazing things happen here, and apparently, they happen after dark, too!

Nauset Welcomes the Nauset App as Our New Communication!
As you may know, the Nauset District has discontinued its use of ParentSquare and has transitioned to a new platform. If you download the Nauset App, you will receive all alerts, newsletters, and any other info from your child's school and the Nauset district. It’s the easiest way to stay updated with school news, alerts, and important announcements.
Similar to last year, I will continue using Smore to send out our weekly newsletters during the school year. These will begin the week before our return and will continue consistently throughout the year.
📱 Download the Nauset App:

The Lawrence Fund
The Lawrence Fund was established in March of 2023 by Ariana Bradford (Staff Member at WES) and Joan Zukas (School Committee member). The Fund was established to honor Lawrence Zukas, father to Ariana and husband to Joan. Its’ purpose is to financially support students and their families who may be in need of funds for camps, sports equipment, shoes, coats, boots, musical instruments, school supplies including technology support, etc. Request can be made to Mrs. Ariana Bradford, Mr. Adam O’Shea, Mrs. Claudia Cope or your child’s teacher. No proof of need is asked, The Lawrence Fund is just happy to help. Any additional questions can be answered by Claudia Cope at copec@nausetschools.org or by phone at (508) 349-3101.
