Dear Parents and Carers,

We reach the start of another very busy week here at OLSG. I can hardly believe we have nearly reached the end of January. Our children have been working hard in and out of class, with a variety of trips, workshops and other learning experiences. We look forward to the arrival of brighter mornings, warmer temperatures and even more amazing learning.

Best wishes,

Ms R McGylnn

Online Safety- Breck Foundation

As part of our commitment to ensure pupils' safety online, last week, pupils at both sites took part in Online safety workshops delivered by the Breck Foundation. The children learnt about keeping safe online and about how to use online devices responsibly. We will continue this focus as we celebrate safer internet day on February 10th. If your child does access the internet at home, please be reminded to monitor their use and be mindful that what they are accessing is age appropriate and safe.

Year 6 Trip to the British Film Institute

On 13th January, Year 6 went on a school trip to the British Film Institute to learn about World War 2. The students watched film excerpts and answered questions. We finished the day by watching a heart warming film called Goodnight Mr Tom. Everyone agreed that the films were engaging and emotive, really helping pupils to develop their understanding of war time life.

Poetry competition Winner!

Last week we announce the winner of the KS2 Christmas poetry competition. We received many fantastic entries inspired by the Garden Year by Sara Coleridge- full of imaginative vocabulary and thoughtful descriptions. Well done to all the pupils were took part, it really was a tough decision choosing a winner.

The winning poem was written by Valentina in Year 3. Not only did Valentina write a wonderful poem but she was so inspired that she created seasonal paintings and sculpture to accompany her poem. Fantastic job Valentina!

Prayer & Reflection Prayer & Reflection

Prayer Room

Our prayer room contribution come from Allessia, Year 6 and Abigail, Year 5.

Dear all mighty God,

In the name of Jesus Christ the Only One Worthy of this Holy name, that all ordinary people will be blessed and live in harmony with everyone. Even if they are different to other people that they will have the same opportunities. Jesus help us to believe in you, help us to know your always their, help us to see the light you bring to our earth. Baptise us so that we can put others over ourselves, so we can see right from wrong, so we have the grace and kindness that you showed to each and one of us. Teach us to be like you, to create peace with those who wish us harm, to love our enemies, to help everyone and not be bias because one is our friend.

Jesus I pray that you always help those who feel burden, who feel they are alone, who feel neglected or ignored by those around them, teach them to always rely on you so they know that they don't need to live in fear, they don't have to be independent all the time, they don't have to always fight their own battles because they have You to rely on.

Amen

By Allessia

Dear Lord,

Thank You for giving up Your life for us to wash away our sins and for loving all us no matter how we act or what we do. Thank You for always encouraging us to make the right choices and to be the best people we can be. Thank You for always being by our side and guiding us. Thank You for being light in our darkness and the peace in our world.

Help us to treat others fairly and not treat people different from others just because of their race, religion and what or who they respect. Help us to be loving towards others and to put others, like our friends or maybe someone who needs help more than us first. Lord, please help us to create a world of peace, unity, harmony and happiness and to be all live in unity with one another just like You teach us to.

Amen

Reflection- Following God in to New Beginnings

January arrived quietly, almost humbly, after the intensity of Christmas fades. The lights come down, the decorations are stored away, and the Church steps into Ordinary Time. Yet there is nothing ordinary about this moment. January invites us to begin again—to listen once more to God’s call and to choose, deliberately, the path of discipleship.

In the Gospels proclaimed during these weeks, we hear familiar but challenging words: “Come follow me.” Jesus does not wait for the perfect moment or the perfect person. He calls ordinary people in the middle of their daily lives—fishermen casting nets, workers at their tasks. Their response is striking: “They left their nets and followed him.” Discipleship begins not with having everything figured out, but with trust and movement.

Discipleship is not about short lived new years resolutions it is a way of life. It shapes how we pray, how we love, how we forgive, and how we serve. At this time of year we are reminded that we are beloved sons and daughters of the Father, called not only to believe in Christ but to live as Christ did. We follow God not out of fear or obligation, but because we have first been loved. January discipleship is often quiet and unseen. It looks like choosing prayer when motivation is low, returning to Mass with renewed intention, practicing patience in family life, and seeking God’s will in small, ordinary decisions, allowing God to shape our hearts and minds this year.

As this new year unfolds, we are invited to walk forward—not perfectly, but faithfully. Like the first disciples, we may not know exactly where the road will lead. This year is an opportunity to leave behind what holds us back, and to follow God more deeply into the life He desires for us.
