Pastor Rich's Weekly Devotional
Joe Friday was Wrong
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” Jesus said. (Mark 12:30)
Joe Friday was a fictional LAPD detective portrayed by Jack Webb in the classic television show Dragnet. His badge number was 714, which was interestingly later retired as a badge number by the real LAPD in honor of Jack Webb.
Jack Webb played Joe Friday with deadpan delivery, attention to police procedure, and a focus on the truth. His character was associated with the famous phrase, “Just the facts, ma’am.”
Perhaps, information alone will carry the day for a courtroom prosecution, but information alone is not enough to transform the spirit of one searching for the meaning and purpose only God can provide. To teach of God’s way with a sterile, emotionless affect is to do injustice to the joy we experience in our Savior.
Our goal in the church is not simply to communicate the truth, or ‘just the facts’, but also to entice people to fall in love with our God who already loves them. A purely cognitive response to God is inadequate. We cannot know God properly without fully engaging our emotions.
“Knowing” is not an abstract knowledge of a doctrine of God; it is a personal relationship with the personal God. It is the difference between the French verb savoir, meaning knowing a fact, and connaitre, meaning knowing a person. Spirituality is not less than cognitive, it is more than cognitive. It is growth in a relationship with the living God. (Alice Mathews)
May our daily lives show we truly love our God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Celebrating God's Love
Sunday, October 11, 2026, marked the start of the 2027 Stewardship Campaign, “Celebrating God’s Love.” This Sunday is Consecration Sunday.
Personal stewardship packets have been sent. In the packet, you will find Pastor Rich’s letter, pledge and service cards, a flyer detailing the Proposed Budget, and other information. Over the past three Sundays, different presenters have celebrated the excellent work of the beloved Mission Team, the impressive Building and Grounds Crew, and finally, the much-trusted Trustees group. We plan to collect and consecrate the pledge and service cards during the service this Sunday, November 8. Please continue to pray and take time to review your personal gifts of time and talent and your monetary resources for the benefit of Orchard Lake Community Church, Presbyterian, in the year of our Lord, 2027.
God Bless and Celebrate!
