Sustainability at Knox
What are the ways our Knox Community thrives?
We Investigate, We Ask Questions, We Learn!
And we Conduct Waste Audits! ( and we wear fun suits! :)
On October 16th, Students for Sustainability, Food Recovery Network, the Office of Sustainability, and Bon Appétit Intern Grace Mennerick, conducted a Waste Audit of the 3 way- waste bins across campus. The audit aimed to understand how we as a community are doing with properly diverting waste within our 3 way waste systems at dining, Gizmo, and the other three locations on campus.
How are we doing with contamination and diversion
in our 3-way waste bins?
What did we Learn?
We can improve what we are putting in the different bins!
We observed a lot of BPI certified compostables being put in the RECYCLING bins and LANDFILL Bins, which would be better placed in the COMPOSTABLE Bins. In this way, we can convert this material to a nutrient rich resource. This would reduce contamination and divert material from the Landfill.
We need your help to reduce contamination and divert materials correctly!
Put the appropriate materials in the correct bins!

We Loved Celebrating with you at Farm Fall Fest!
It was so fun to celebrate fall with you during Farm Fall Fest this past Thursday. We had a great time drinking apple cider, carving pumpkins, and doing other fun autumnal activities with you! And a special thank you to everyone who helped make this event happen, including Seymour Library, S4S, FRN, and Farm Crew.
S4S set up a share shop cold-weather pop-up with cozy second-hand treasures. And, they helped attendees stamp exciting designs onto jeans, bags, caps, and other items.
FRN Made delicious homemade caramel and provided supplies for decorating caramel apples!
You all carved some awesome jack-o-lanterns! The steps of Seymour library are now a-glow with cute kitties, Cinderella's Carriage, a bat, a tree, spooky faces, and more. Our judges had a difficult time choosing one winning pumpkin from all the creative designs! Congratulations to Anna-Lena and Erin, who are the official winners of the contest.
PSA: Don't throw out your pumpkins!
