What Our Parents Say...

Nadeem & Sophie Esmail - Preschool & 1st Grade Parents

“What drew us to The Franklin Academy was the individualized learning that starts with the teacher striving to understand each student's potential. The small class sizes facilitate this specialized student-teacher partnership. Beyond the classroom, The Franklin Academy fosters a sense of community through service projects that benefit our neighbors and those in need. These aspects of The Franklin Academy make the school feel like an extended family to us!”

How Big is a Foot? 1st Grade Investigates!

Mrs. Brewin shared this:

“This week we did a fun measurement project involving the story How Big is a Foot. In the story, the king wants to make a bed for the queen and he discovers it needs to be 3 of his feet wide and 6 of his feet long to fit the queen. Then he asks his apprentice to make the bed and the apprentice measures it with his own feet and the bed is too small for the queen.

Our task was to make paper beds for the queen that are 3 feet wide and 6 feet long. Students made cutouts of their own feet, then measured 3 feet wide and 6 feet long to make the beds. Then we had a guest visit from the queen...she tried out the beds and they were all too small! So that led to a great discussion of what happened and the need for standard units of measurement. We then remade a bed using a cutout of the king's foot and it fit the queen! Pictures of the queen testing the beds are attached.”

Preschool is Excited About Dinosaur Week!

There are tons of fun-filled activities in our preschool for the themed Dino Week! Several classes are reviewing the letter Dd, enjoying hands-on activities, and learning about dinosaurs!

Mrs. Owen, one of our pre-k teachers, shared this:

“ We have really been enjoying DINO week! The kiddos or 'paleontologists' were sooo.. into this science experiment that I wanted to share it with you today. It's called Dino Egg Ice Excavation. We discussed the 3 States of Matter and how water can be all three. First, we put baby dino toys into deflated balloons. Next, we filled the balloons with water. Then, we placed the balloons into the freezer. Today, we cut the balloon free from the ice and began 'excavating'. Almost immediately, the children noticed that both the warmth of the sun and their hands began to change the ice. The kids enjoyed dropping, pouring, and dumping water onto the ice and watching it melt closely with their magnifying glasses . Enjoy the pictures! This was a blast and what perfect weather for a really wet experiment!”

Kindergarten Vocabulary Lesson!

Did you know that Mrs. Rawls' Kindergarten has weekly "new '' robust vocabulary words? This week the students are learning the following words: flutter, interesting, annoy, distinctive, and insect. This is in addition to routinely reviewing sounds/letters, enjoying 'reading centers' where students get a chance to practice and strengthen their already reading skills, reviewing sight words, and practicing spelling/ writing words (this week is a review of 'th' words). In Kindergarten there is still time for guided reading where students work with others at their own reading level to practice reading fluency and comprehension, too.

Eggciting Egg Experiments in Mrs. Owen's Pre-Kindergarten Class!

Mrs. Owen shared this:

Here's what we have been up to:

    • Letter Ee, how it looks, writes, sounds, and signs
    • Super Sight Word for, Ee is 'for' Easter
    • Intro to the word family -en, hen, men, ten...list coming home after Spring Break
    • All About Number 19, handwriting, tally, number line, base ten+
    • Counted eggs, counted spots on eggs, counted to 100 by ones and tens, shape review
    • Created our Easter Bags, bunny ears, paper bunny crafts, bunny handprints, and our favorite marbled shaving cream eggs
    • Performed and 'Eggciting Density' science experiment. Eggs sink in water, float in salt water, and are suspended in the middle of salt water and water! Cool!
    • Made Rubber Eggs by soaking raw eggs in vinegar. We gently rolled, bounced, and shined a flashlight through the eggs to see the yolk. It took 3 bounces for our rubber eggs to break! Neat!

Enjoy the Latest Creations from Kindergarten and First Grade Students!

We've had a great time using our imagination. and drawing skills to create landscapes with a 2-dimension building. Some made their 2D building a house, and others chose a barn. We used oil pastels to make patterns, & to outline the drawing, then painted with watercolors. ~ Miss Rachel #BeKindLetsShine

Springtime Celebrations!

Spring is a time for celebrating! Many of us celebrate Easter, but how many of you know what other holidays are being celebrated by our own Franklin Academy families this time of year?

Passover, Ramadan, Nowruz, and Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations are enjoyed by many of our students. One of the great things about our diverse and inclusive school is how much we can learn from each other. We are excited to celebrate the varying religious and cultural identities of all of the families at The Franklin Academy. As we learn about others, our lives are enriched.
