Dear Families and Students,

Happy October! Despite the unusually warm weather, we are actually into Fall. With that brings lots of exciting things at PGE.

Our PTA did a wonderful job with the Sock Hop, and we had great attendance! The next event is the Fall Carnival on Friday, October 24. We hope to see you all there. Our winning PTA membership class was Mrs. Swensen's class! Thank you for joining the PTA. You can still join at anytime by visiting their website. Membership helps our PTA run, and gives you a discount to all PTA events!

Our staff has been growing their knowledge of Social Emotional Learning and using our new Second Step curriculum.Our focus for this upcoming month is Growth Mindset and Goal Setting. According to the Second Step® curriculum, a growth mindset is the core belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed over time through effort, practice, and help from others.

We are focusing our Academic staff learning on writing! You can help us out with writing at home, by having your students tell you stories from their day, and helping them identify vocabulary in every day life. Visit the grocery store and look for the names of various types of vegetables. Looking at the prices helps them with real life math too! Read a book together and find some new words. Play games like I Spy or Scrabble.

We meet as a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support) team on the last Wednesday of the month. In this team, we look at behavioral incident data and problem solve how to support our students in their choices. We have noticed an uptick in the usage of profanity, and in restroom misuse (e.g. pulling toilet paper off the roles, taking paper towels out of the holder, and leaving messes on the floor). Please talk with your children about how they can help in situations like these. If another student is using profanity, have them practice Stop, Walk, and Talk. This means to ask the student to stop, to walk away, and to talk to an adult. If they notice a mess in the bathroom, report it to an adult! If you are interested in being on our PBIS team, we are looking for some parents to help us out! Call Mrs. Newton, our VP, in the office if you would like to join us.

October is a big month for PTA events and happenings. Join us for the PTA General Meeting on Thursday October 8th at 6pm. We'll be meeting at South Slope Winery, students are also welcome to join as there is plenty of space to play! We'll be discussing upcoming events and would love to get your feedback on how everyone enjoyed the Sock Hop, Book Fair and the recent Spirit Wear order.

Huge congratulations to Swensen's class for winning the PTA membership drive. They'll be enjoying their Pizza Party next week.

Our Fall Carnival is quickly approaching (Friday October 23rd from 5p-7:30p) and tickets will be on sale soon! All PTA members will get a discount code for 20% off your tickets so if you haven't already joined the PTA, now is a good time! The Fall Carnival will include games, bounce houses, a hay ride, a cake walk, trunk or treat, burgers & hotdogs and the newest addition: a clothing swap! We have a variety of opportunities for community involvement and would love your support with our Carnival this year. If you'd like to sign up to decorate your trunk and be a part of our Trunk or Treat you can sign up here. Candy donations for the Trunk or Treat can be found here. The Cake Walk is always a big part of our Fall Carnival too so if you'd like to provide a cake or other baked goodies to the Cake Walk or volunteer to help during the event click here. This year we are using a new curriculum - Second Step. It is similar to Character Counts, but focuses more on the SEL competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and decision making. It also supports our ELA Listening and Speaking standards!

Thank you to everyone for bringing your students on time. We have noticed a decrease in tardies, and an increase in the number of students going to early ExL and breakfast! These are great ways to help your student get to school on time and start the day strong.

In our small community, we don't have a lot of extra space for drop off and pick up! If you want to park, we recommend getting to school early and using the parking lot. Without sidewalks, we cannot have crosswalks, and we don't have enough interested volunteers to create a temporary crosswalk.

Please do not walk your child in the car loop!! If you are walking into the school, use the sidewalks on either side of the car loop. This also sets up safe habits for walking as they get older.

At pick up, remember to pull all the way forward so we can fit as many cars in the pick up loop as possible. We continue to remind your student(s) to pay attention to the car loop. Help us by giving them reminders too!

Please leave soda and energy drinks at home. Water and milk are the best choices to keep students hydrated and ready to learn. We appreciate your support!

FRIDAY, October 9 all Lost and Found will be taken to donation. Please stop by and check it out if you are missing anything.
