Lyme School Friends,

We have had another busy and productive two weeks!

School is bustling with activity and we continue to keep our eyes on the many things we need to accomplish before the end of the year. Our lower schoolers put on a successful concert and are getting ready for their Maypole event. Our middle schoolers have finished their state testing. Our 5th graders attended their first middle school activity night. Our 4th graders finished their penpal project and met their penpals.

This was also the week that our 8th graders were off campus. They had an excellent trip to Washington DC and Gettysburg (pictured right students enjoying breakfast overlooking Gettysburg Battlefield). Students took in many sites and had a great time celebrating the end of their time at school. Their next big event is graduation which will be held on June 11th at 4:30.

Have a great long weekend! School will be closed on Monday for the holiday.

The next newsletter will hit your inbox on June 5th!

As always, thank you for your partnership and please reach out if we can be of assistance.

Regards,

John P. D'Entremont, Principal

Hello! Next week on Thursday, May 29th at 1:00PM will be our yearly Maypole Celebration, with performances by Lyme School's K-5 classes. This is a longstanding tradition in the Lyme Community and we hope to see you there!

Every year our lower school classes make baskets to hand out to community members. If you have extra flowers at home or in your garden to donate please send them in with your student the day of the Maypole or drop them off in the buckets placed outside the entrance to the school.

If your student is participating, we encourage them to wear "springy" clothes. This is an outdoor event, please check the weather so everyone is comfortable outside that day!

Starting at 1PM we will have music performed by some of our student violinists as well as the adult recorder group the Suite Notes. Around 1:15 the program will begin as follows:

Kinder: Busy Like a Bee

1st: K.I.N.D.

2nd: The Garden Song (Inch by Inch)

3rd: The Rattlin' Bog

4th: Constant Billy- Morris Dance

5th: Maypole Dance and weaving of the Maypole, Unite and Unite

K-4: the passing out of the May Baskets

Parking reminder: please make sure you park at the school or in the park and ride, no cards are allowed to be parked around the Green.

Note: for safety students will not have their belongings with them and the expectation is everyone will return to school and be dismissed at 2PM. Reach out to your student's classroom teacher if you are expecting to collect your child right from the Green after the performance.

Rain Date: Friday, May 30th @2:15PM

Thank you!

Sincerely,

We welcomed Marek Bennett, a NH-based cartoonist, musician, and educator, to the Lyme School this week. Marek taught our grades 5-7 students several cartooning techniques and how to tell a story in an 8-page mini-booklet. Students created comics about historical topics with Ms. Collins and animal adaptations with Ms. Burns.

Marek’s published comics work includes the graphic novel series, The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, as well as drawing, translating, & editing for The Most Costly Journey (2021) with the bilingual El Viaje Project. In September 2022, both books were featured at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC.

Please help students look for books around the house and return anything you find. Books can be returned at school or Converse Free Library, regardless of where they were checked out from and if they are checked out under a school or family account. We will start transitioning student check-outs to family accounts on June 1. If you do not have a family account at the Converse Free Library, please reach out.

Hello Lyme School Families!

We’re excited to announce that we’re now accepting applications for middle school students (rising 6th–8th graders) who are interested in joining the Student Advisory Leadership Team (SALT) for the upcoming school year!

This past year, our SALT members did an incredible job launching the program. They played a key role in their advisories and were instrumental in organizing and leading our new Lyme PRIDE Days—fun, all-school, multi-age events that brought our community together. We’re eager to welcome a new group of student leaders and can’t wait to see the energy and ideas they’ll bring!

Information and applications have been shared with our rising 6th graders and rising 7th/8th graders are also welcome to apply!

Here is the information sheet

Here is the application

Applications are due to Mrs. Stanton by Monday, June 2nd. New members will be notified on Friday June 6th

Students may handwrite their responses or create a digital copy of the application to submit electronically or physically to rstanton@lymeschool.org.

Thank you for supporting student leadership at Lyme as “we strive to create an inclusive school environment where all students feel valued.”

With Gusto!

Art News

Kindergarten

K kids have been looking at Art and practicing describing what they see. I love this, as I am never quite sure what will come out of the imaginations of K kids. These last few weeks, we looked at Alma Thomas’ Spring Flowers and Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie.

First Grade

This week, we learned about three famous sculptures: Michelangelo’s David, Oldenburg’s Giant Toothpaste Tube, and the Spiral Jetty (Robert Smithson). Grade 1 has discovered the hot glue station (low temp) and have been working on making 3D art.

Second Grade

Continuing on the theme of art and nature, 2s looked at the artwork of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Students mixed their cold colors to paint ponds. There is much joy in this process as they discover the infinite range of watery colors.

Third Grade

We learned about the artist Yayoi Kusama and why she uses so many dots in her work. We practiced steady ruler skills and created webs of connected dots.

Fourth Grade

4s continue to deep dive into stop motion animation. They are refining their films and continuing to find new features of the stop motion app on the ipads. We learned about “pixilation” (stop motion using people) and tried to develop some “special effects” techniques.

Fifth Grade

We continue on the journey to bring their animals and their scientific stories to life. We are just transitioning from the form to the details, which is where much of the magic happens!

Middle School Elective

For the last Art elective of the school year, a group of 7th and 8th grade students are creating a set of new artist stools for the art room. I asked these students to pick a favorite artist to represent on their stool, keeping in mind that this is really a gift for the younger students of Lyme School. The students have chosen a collection of poets, singers, artists, and authors to give inspiration to the littles. (Pictured: experiments in cyanotype for an Anna Atkins inspired stool)

Cultural Studies in Spanish Class

Our latest cultural dive in 4th and 5th grade Spanish classes has been learning about the Spanish-speaking country of Peru. By reading short articles about its diverse geography, including the Amazon Rainforest and the Andes Mountain range, students practiced the high-frequency verbs we've been studying, used context clues and cognates to gather meaning, and learned new vocabulary at the same time. Students also learned about some of Peru's most famous tourist sites including the "rainbow mountain" named Vinicunca and Machu Picchu. Lastly, students learned all about how Peru is famous for being the birth-place of potatoes. They have over 4,000 varieties of potatoes in Peru and they are a staple of the diet there! (Pictured here is a glyph that shows which facts about Peru students found most interesting.)

Primary PE News

Students in the primary grades have continued with skill work around eye-hand coordination. This week, students were paired and given the task of trying to pass a small plastic puck back and forth to one another with accuracy.

Working with partners is a great way to practice this skill and allows for students to have fun during that practice time. Eye-hand coordination is an important skill to develop tracking between the brain, eyes, and hands as voluntary movement, which helps with such things as reading

PE Elective Update

Team tournament play has returned for round two of our PE elective for the year and game play certainly did not disappoint! After a championship round and two overtimes, teams red and yellow claimed dual victories to claim the team tournament play trophy in soccer.

This elective always proves to be fun and exciting and I’m proud of our kids who work so hard and compete with good skill and a great attitude!

Lyme Lions Robotics Team Heads to California for Global Competition

The Lyme Lions Robotics team, consisting of ten middle schoolers from Lyme, has been busy revamping their presentation and robot design as they prepare for an invitational tournament in Long Beach, California next week. The team will be competing against (and also collaborating with) teams from around the world.

I am proud of the time and energy that the team put into their work this year, and I'm excited to see them perform on a big stage!
