A Message from Your Principal Team
Dear Washington Families,
What an amazing time it has been at Washington Elementary! ❤️ Our classrooms were filled with smiles, thoughtful cards, and joyful celebrations as students enjoyed Valentine’s Day festivities together. Beyond the treats and decorations, we’ve been focusing on something even more meaningful — our Month of Kindness.
Throughout the school, students have been practicing what it means to be kind through small acts of generosity, encouraging words, and living out our Eagle Code: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. It has been inspiring to see our Eagles lifting one another up and spreading positivity in every hallway. Be on the look out for shout outs to students during Community time this Thursday and Friday.
A couple Reminders for parents and guardians: With colder winter weather upon us, please help your child stay safe and comfortable by sending them to school dressed warmly. Labeling jackets, hats, and other outerwear with your child’s name is especially helpful, as many items look alike and this makes returning lost belongings much easier.
If your child is in need of a coat, hat, or other warm clothing, we are happy to help. Please contact our office at 971-983-3050 or reach out to our home-school contact, Amy Gutiérrez, at amy.gutierrez@woodburnsd.org
We are so close to beginning our next round of reading interventions. Currently the preparation work is being completed. We are using the winter STAR reading assessment data to create groups and focus on foundational skills for our students in need. By the end of this week, all students needing additional reading support will be in a group that meets 4 times a week. Each group has a specific skill to advance their development as readers. A giant thank you to all our Educational Assistants that play a vital role in supporting our students.
Kindness truly makes our school stronger. Go Eagles! 🦅
Warm regards,
Alfredo Belanger - Principal
Antonio Ramos - Asst. Principal
What is happening at Washington?
February is Black History Month
February is Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black individuals throughout history. It’s an opportunity to celebrate diversity, learn from the past, and inspire a future of inclusion and understanding. Let’s take this month to recognize and appreciate the impact of Black leaders, innovators, and changemakers in our community and beyond!
February Perfect Attendance Challenge! (Feb 3 - 27).
Kinder Registration is Open
Families, please be aware that Kinder registration for the 2026-2027 school year is now open. Please see the fliers below for more information and contact information.
Seal of Biliteracy
The Oregon Seal of Biliteracy is a significant acknowledgement of the culmination of our dual language programs, it recognizes and values student’s heritage languages, and is a valuable credential for our bilingual students. The award not only is a part of the high school transcript and diploma, but it also certifies biliteracy for employers and universities. It is a statement of accomplishment that helps to signal evidence of a student’s readiness for career and/or college, and engage as a global citizen.
Our bilingual program at Washington Elementary allows students to work towards this accomplishment.
Safety: Visitor Entry
We wanted to take a moment and remind everyone of the process we have for visitors accessing our school sites. Thanks to the hard work of our community in passing a bond years ago, we were able to build secure vestibules and add entry safety measures at sites. That means that every main entrance has a camera and a microphone that is connected to the school office. This is the main access point for all visitors who do not have keys or badges. All visitors will be asked to stop at the outside door and buzz into the office. If it is your first time going to the school, and the staff do not recognize you, you will be asked to identify yourself and your purpose. This means any visitors who do not have a legal or legitimate reason for entering the school, would not be allowed entrance. This is why the vestibules and entry cameras were added. They are a tremendous safety tool and we are grateful to have them. We do ask that if you are outside waiting to come in, please be patient. Our staff will get to you as soon as they can. Thank you for your understanding and helping us keep our buildings safe.
Visitor Entry Procedures:
Locate main entrance
Locate microphone and camera and press buzzer
Wait for office staff to greet you through the intercom
Be prepared to identify yourself and your purpose
Enter school vestibule area if buzzed in
If entrance is denied, you can request administration assistance to meet you at the main door
