Steelton-Highspire Jr./Sr. High School Hosts 2nd Annual Soul Food Luncheon

On Friday, February 21st, Steelton-Highspire Jr./Sr. High School staff gathered for the 2nd annual Soul Food Luncheon in celebration of Black History Month. Inspired by the tradition of Sunday dinners in African American culture, this event honors the cherished gatherings where generations of family and church communities would come together at the home of the eldest matriarch.

This special luncheon was made possible by the dedication of Dr. Frances Jackson, Betty Bennett, Sarah Perez, Leslie Elby, and Alishaa Jones. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed donations and support, helping make this event another great success!

Cooking with Confidence: A Hands-On Lesson in Healthy Eating

The Center for Independent Living recently visited Mrs. Yarnevich's class and led a cooking activity with students. They provided all the ingredients needed to make chicken fried rice. Students had the opportunity to choose their preferred vegetables before using skillets to cook everything together. It was a fantastic hands-on experience, teaching them how to prepare a healthy meal on their own.

Exploring Biomes Through Hands-On Learning

Third-grade teacher Ms. Batista's three science classes worked on an animal research project, with each class selecting animals from a specific biome. Students began by answering a series of research questions and writing a research paper on their chosen animal. After completing their papers, they created diorama shoeboxes, incorporating details such as their animal’s prey, predators, life cycle, and the characteristics of its biome. To complete the project, they sculpted their animals out of clay, painted them, and added final touches to bring their work to life.
