Jayhawk-Linn
Dear Jayhawk Junior High and High School Families,
We are excited to welcome students and families back for another school year.
Open House will be held on Tuesday, August 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's teachers, tour the building, locate classrooms and lockers, and see the exciting updates we have made before the first day of school.
The first day of school is Thursday. We look forward to welcoming our students back and starting a successful school year together.
As we begin the year, we want to remind families of two important school expectations.
Personal Electronic Device Policy (Bell-to-Bell)
To provide an environment focused on learning, respect, and student engagement, Jayhawk-Linn maintains a bell-to-bell cell phone policy in accordance with Kansas law and district expectations.
During the school day (from the first bell until the final dismissal bell):
- Cell phones and personal electronic devices must be powered off and stored in the student's assigned academic locker.
- Devices may not be carried in pockets, hoodies, backpacks, purses, or other personal belongings during the school day.
- This policy applies to:
- Cell phones
- Smart watches used for communication
- Earbuds and headphones
Before School: Students may use their phones before entering the building. Once inside, phones must be turned off and placed in lockers before the first bell.
After School: Students may retrieve and use their phones after the final dismissal bell.
If a Device Policy Violation Occurs
If a student is found with a cell phone or personal electronic device during school hours:
- The device will be confiscated and turned into the office.
- The student will be required to check their phone into the office at the beginning of each school day for the remainder of the school year.
- Failure to follow the office check-in procedure may result in additional disciplinary consequences.
If students need to contact home during the school day, they may use the office phone. Parents needing to reach their child should contact the school office.
This policy helps reduce classroom distractions, increase student engagement, encourage face-to-face interactions, and support student well-being.
Student Dress Code Reminder
Student dress is a form of personal expression; however, all students are expected to dress in a manner that supports a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
Students should ensure that their clothing:
- Does not disrupt the educational environment.
- Does not create a health or safety concern.
- Includes both a top and bottom garment.
- Provides appropriate coverage of the chest, back, midriff, buttocks, and undergarments.
- Includes shoes worn at all times.
Headwear
- School-appropriate ball caps may be worn but must be removed when entering classrooms.
- Hoods may not be worn over the head during the school day.
The Following Are Not Permitted
- Clothing or accessories that are obscene, vulgar, or contain profanity.
- Clothing promoting violence, illegal activities, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or gang affiliation.
- Clothing that creates a substantial disruption or safety concern.
- Blankets worn as clothing.
- Sunglasses worn indoors unless medically required.
Students will be given the opportunity to correct dress code concerns. Repeated violations or refusal to comply may result in disciplinary action consistent with district policy.
Thank you for partnering with us as we begin another outstanding school year. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and focused learning environment for all students.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Open House on Tuesday, August 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and welcoming students back on Thursday for the first day of school.

New Personal Electronic Device Policy
As we begin the school year, we also want to remind families about a new Kansas law regarding student personal electronic devices. Cell phones, smart watches used for communication, and wireless earbuds/headphones may not be accessible to students during the school day. At Jayhawk-Linn, students will turn off their cell phones and place them in their assigned academic lockers at the beginning of the school day, where they will remain until the end of the day. We appreciate your partnership in helping us create an environment where students can focus on learning and build meaningful connections with their teachers and classmates.
FFA
We’re incredibly excited to renovate our FFA barn and create a space that better serves our students. Our barn is a huge part of our program at Jayhawk Linn and these updates will help us continue providing hands-on learning opportunities through livestock SAE projects. We’re so thankful for this grant and can’t wait to see the impact it will have on our students for years to come. - Ms. Sarah Jordan
Common Q & A - We polled our office staff & here is a FAQ they receive.
My student brings their own lunch. Should I complete a Free/Reduced application?
YES! Everyone that qualifies or thinks they may qualify should complete one! It helps the school, the district, and your student in many different ways. Check out the attached graphic for more information. An approved application from the 25-26 school year only carries over for 30 days. You must complete a new one for the 26-27 school year.

Sharing the Love with Linn County
The Student Handbook is designed to provide students and parents with essential information about our school's policies, procedures, and expectations.
This year, the Course Guide and Athletics Handbook have been combined into a single document for your convenience. You will also notice the addition of a table of contents with hyperlinks, making it easy to navigate directly to the information you need.
We encourage all students and parents to review these resources together before the start of the school year.
