A Message from the Principal, Dr. Christine Nadjarian

Dear Families,

We hit the ground running as our students returned from April break, and there is so much to look forward to as we head toward the end of the school year. Next week will be especially exciting, with our Mother’s Day Tea, Casino Night, and First Holy Communion celebrations. On behalf of the faculty and staff, we are truly looking forward to sharing these special moments together as a community.

Casino Night is a very important evening for our school. While it is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together, it also plays a vital role in supporting the school’s financial mission. Our Director of Admissions and Development, Mrs. Domenica Beiter, along with parent volunteers James Bowman and Deacon Tommy Heyne, have been working tirelessly to plan this special event. We encourage you to attend and bring your friends!

To make the evening more convenient for our families, the event will be held at St. Mary’s, and childcare will be available. We hope this allows more of our community to join us in supporting our mission.

This year, we are especially honored to recognize a very special member of our community, Elisabeth Etaix. As one of our beloved St. Mary’s parents, Elisabeth has been an incredible supporter of both our parish and school for many years. With all four of her children attending St. Mary’s, she has consistently demonstrated dedication, generosity, and a deep commitment to our community. She is an exemplary role model, and we are thrilled to celebrate her contributions.

We hope you will join us for this memorable evening in support of our school and in honoring Elisabeth Etaix.

First Communion Retreat

Fr. Jonathan and Fr. David led our First Communicants and their families in a retreat this week. To begin the retreat, Fr. Jonathan taught students how to make unleavened bread and explained its significance in the celebration of the Eucharist. Students then worked alongside their parents to create their First Communion banners. Parents also had the opportunity to share memories of their own First Communions and discuss what it means to receive the Eucharist for the first time. After the activities, students attended church for rehearsal. Please keep our second grade communicants in your prayers as they prepare for this important sacrament.

Music

Students at St. Mary of the Assumption School were treated to a joyful and inspiring musical visit from talented musicians of New England Conservatory and their Christian jazz gospel ensemble, Good News Collective. The group captivated students with creative arrangements of beloved songs, including “Jesus Loves Me,” inviting everyone to sing along and participate in the performance. The visit was both entertaining and educational, as students also had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and learn about the musicians’ craft, practice, and passion for sharing music. It was a memorable experience filled with faith, fellowship, and joyful music-making.

World Languages

Earlier this week, our middle school students presented a showcase of their learning in World Language classes: French, Spanish, and Latin. Monsieur Raymond, Sra. Bognet, and Mr. Pritchett thoughtfully prepared their students through song, dance, and theatre to share their learning with families and our Grade 3 through Grade 5 students. Additionally, Kindergarten students attended to support their Grade 7 and Grade 8 Buddies. The middle school students highlighted different aspects of world language education: grammar, dialogue, and drama.

Ms. Isidora teaches our youngest emergent Spanish speakers in grades PreK through Grade 2. Each class starts with a prayer and a welcome song, all in Spanish. Students review the daily weather, the days of the week, and the months of the year. Building a strong foundation of content vocabulary sets the stage for students when they increase their Spanish language acquisition to orally express themselves through longer phrases and sentences in later grade levels.

Infant

This week in the infant classroom, students participated in a felt board exploration focused on things that grow. Through sensory play, they explored different textures and objects by touching, moving, and responding to items on the board. This activity supported early language development, visual tracking, color awareness, and fine motor skill development in a playful way.

Toddler

The toddler class explored healthy habits through a hands-on water play activity focused on washing fruits and vegetables. Using water, soap, and small sponges, the students practiced cleaning toy produce while discussing the importance of washing food before eating it. They answered questions such as “what do we use to wash fruits and vegetables?” and “how do we clean them properly?” This engaging activity encouraged language development, critical thinking, and life skills learning while allowing students to learn through play and conversation.

Grade 1

The first grade class has spent the month of April learning about Colonial New England in social studies. This week, they welcomed in a special guest from the Historic Pierce House in Dorchester. Students compared modern day times to colonial times, and matched reproduced artifacts to current ones of similar use. It was a great activity!

Grade 3

Our third graders are officially becoming expert authors! Over the past few weeks, they’ve been hard at work researching and drafting strong body paragraphs for their expert topic books. Now, they’re shifting their focus to writing engaging introductions, hooking their readers, clearly introducing their topic, and setting the stage for all the information to come.

It’s been exciting to see students organize their ideas into clear paragraphs, stay focused on their topics, and really think about how to teach their reader. We’re so proud of the effort, growth, and confidence they’re showing in their writing!

Grade 4

4th Grade has been working diligently on their "About Me" Booklets in our Informational reading and writing unit. They drafted, edited, and completed a final draft of their "Life Story". Students then compiled a booklet containing their writing, a family tree, neighborhood map, and photo section to demonstrate all of the growth they have experienced in their lives. Today students demonstrate their knowledge of different text features as well as the creativity they used to create their booklets. Students presented their work to the class using this as an opportunity to connect with their peers and practice their presentation skills.

Middle School

Yesterday, Harvard professor and children’s book author, Fernando Reimers, visited the middle school students. Fernando told the students how he learned to love books by watching the adults around him love books, and he began a love of writing when sending letters to family members in Spain as a young boy. He said that when we write an idea down, we then have the opportunity to go back and improve it later. He also shared that a big reason why he became a writer was that adults recognized his interest and talent and encouraged him. He wrote two one-page essays and asked his teacher to post them on the bulletin board. The principal saw them and offered him the chance to start a school newspaper. The students were given pens from Harvard University and an individual paper copy of their slideshow as tools to begin writing their own story. Fernando told the students that “Asking good questions is the beginning of writing stories,” and “Once you put your thoughts in writing, you can change the world.”

As part of their ongoing unit on human organ systems, 7th graders learned about nutrients and the digestive system. They learned the names and functions of the structures that make up the digestive tract, and they built a model using ribbon to show its total length as well as the length of each individual structure. They were amazed that this pathway, which is over seven meters long, is able to fit inside each of us.

We were honored to welcome United States Navy Veteran Christine Cugini, Director of Veterans Services for the City of Quincy, Massachusetts: an especially notable distinction as she is the first female veteran to hold this position! Christine Cugini came to us as a contact of our Board of Specified Jurisdiction Member and true partner to St. Mary’s school, Kitty Boles. Kitty was Christine’s 3rd grade teacher! Christine recently spoke with our Middle School students as part of her speaker series during Ms. Kfoury’s Leadership Seminar Class. We are excited that she will be returning to present to students in grades 3 through 5 in the coming weeks. In preparation for her visit, our teachers helped students thoughtfully generate questions, all of which Cugini took the time to answer with care and depth. She was knowledgeable, kind, and engaging, offering students meaningful insight into what it truly means to serve in our military. Christine Cugini grew up in Brookline and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish. She served in the Gulf War in the 1990s,and she spoke with the students about her time on the USS Yellowstone and what it was like to be among the first group of women in an active combat zone. From describing daily life (what service members eat and wear) to sharing details about life aboard a ship, her hard work, and the wide range of services provided. She also shared what led her to work with military veterans now in the hospital setting. We are deeply grateful to Christine Cugini and Kitty Boles for sharing her time, perspective, and service with our school community!
