A Fresh Start to the School Year
Dear Parents and Families,
As the new school year begins, families everywhere are settling into fresh routines. This might look like organizing after-school activities, setting consistent bedtimes, or getting used to a new bus stop. Schools are also building important routines that help create a strong start for students.
The fall months are a wonderful time for families and teachers to connect. Many schools host events such as Meet the Teacher, Open House, or family nights during September and October. Attending these events helps you build a relationship with your child’s teacher. If you are not able to be there in person, a quick email or phone call is another great way to introduce yourself and share helpful insights about your child.
When schools and families work together, students benefit in meaningful ways both academically and socially. We look forward to partnering with you and wish your family a positive and successful 2025–2026 school year.
With appreciation,
Your Multilingual Program Team
Your Partnership Tasks from the Multilingual Department
Get Involved with LPAC (Volunteers Needed)
Fort Bend ISD values parent involvement in supporting Emergent Bilingual (EB) students. Parents are needed to serve on the Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) to help ensure that EB students receive the support and services they need to succeed academically.
Emergent Bilingual (EB)-A student identified by the LPAC who is in the process of acquiring English and has another language as the student's home language.
-
Campus-Level LPAC: Parents can serve on their child’s campus LPAC, working closely with teachers and staff to provide input about our EB students' language learning needs. Campus LPAC meetings typically occur monthly.
-
District-Level LPAC: The District LPAC plays a key role in the initial identification process for EB students, reviewing assessment data and determining eligibility for language support services. Parents serving at the district level also help review broader policies and programs affecting EB students (Newcomers) across Fort Bend ISD. District LPAC meetings typically occur weekly.
How to Get Involved: Training is provided, if applicable, for parents serving on the LPAC, and multiple opportunities for participation are available throughout the year.
To show your interest in serving on either a campus or district LPAC, please complete the Microsoft Form.
Your participation is needed to strengthen the partnership between families and schools and to help ensure EB students receive high-quality support.

Fall Essentials: Top Tips
Self-Care Tips
After the summer break, the start of the school year can feel overwhelming for both parents and children. Early mornings, classes, homework, and extracurricular activities can quickly fill up the day and leave everyone feeling drained. It’s important to create small, intentional moments to relax and connect as a family. Even setting aside just 15 minutes each evening to unwind together can make a noticeable difference. During this time, you might share highlights from the day, discuss any challenges, or plan for the week ahead. It can also be a time to read together, play a simple game, or simply enjoy quiet conversation.
Research from education and psychology journals highlights strategies families can use to reduce back-to-school stress and support children’s well-being:
Tips for Supporting Your Child and Family
-
Establish predictable routines – Consistent morning and evening schedules can reduce anxiety and help children transition smoothly.
-
Incorporate relaxation techniques – Age-appropriate mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing or guided visualization, can calm stress.
-
Prioritize sleep hygiene – Maintain consistent bedtimes, limit screens before bed, and include calming pre-sleep activities.
-
Foster emotional communication – Encourage open discussions about feelings to strengthen family bonds and emotional resilience.
-
Promote physical activity – Regular movement, like walks or active play, helps children release energy and manage stress.
-
Limit screen time – Set boundaries to prevent overstimulation and encourage restful, interactive activities.
-
Encourage independence – Allow children to take on age-appropriate tasks, such as packing their own school bags.
-
Set realistic expectations – Accept that not every day will go perfectly; flexibility reduces stress and builds resilience.
-
Engage in family activities – Dedicate time for shared activities, like reading or playing games, to strengthen relationships.
-
Seek support when needed – Reach out to teachers, counselors, or support groups if stress becomes overwhelming.
Spending daily moments of calm with your child and integrating these strategies helps reduce stress, supports healthy development, and keeps family life balanced. Small routines and intentional connection can make the busy fall season more manageable and enjoyable for everyone.
Tips for Strengthening Communication with Your Child’s Teacher
Before the Meeting:
Talk with your child about their experiences in class. Ask how they feel about their teacher and whether they are facing any challenges with schoolwork.
During the Meeting:
Focus on both your child’s strengths and areas where they could improve. Ask about their social and emotional wellbeing, including their participation in class and overall mood.
After the Meeting:
Share the conversation with your child and discuss any plans or strategies that were agreed upon with the teacher.
Questions to Help Start the Conversation:
-
How is my child performing in class? Are they actively participating?
-
What can I do at home to support my child’s learning?
-
Is my child on track to pursue college or a career after graduation?
-
What programs or resources are available to help my child prepare for college?
-
Are there opportunities for my child to engage in more advanced or challenging learning experiences?
Important Reminder:
If English is a concern, you can request an interpreter to ensure you fully understand and participate in the meeting.
This Fall’s Learning Boost
Students in Fort Bend ISD will complete NWEA MAP computer-adaptive assessments three times a year to gain information about what students know and what they are ready to learn next. MAP also gives insight into how students are growing academically, allowing you to track your student's progress throughout the school year and across multiple years. Families will have access to their child's results after each testing window. For more information, visit the NWEA Family Toolkit linked here or contact your child’s teacher.
How MAP Growth Works
MAP Growth is designed to support student learning and data-informed decisions. View the video below for an overview of what you can expect when students take the MAP Growth Assessment. All students in grades K-8 and students enrolled in specific high school courses will take MAP Growth assessments.
Understanding RIT Scores
After each MAP Growth test, results are delivered in the form of a RIT score that reflects the student’s academic knowledge, skills, and abilities. Think of this score like marking height on a growth chart. You can tell how tall your child is at various points in time and how much they have grown between one stage and another. View the video linked below for more information about RIT scores.
MAP Reading Fluency (Elementary Only)
MAP Reading Fluency assesses early reading skills—including letter and word recognition, oral reading fluency, and literal comprehension—to support students on their journey to independent reading. To see the assessment from a student's perspective, watch the video linked below.
