LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to our Arleta Chess Club for placing 3rd at the Regional Chess Tournament this past Saturday! Thank you to Ms. Raina, who supports our Chess for Success program through SUN, and for gathering these highlights from a few of our Arleta Dolphin Superstars ~
Wesley truly believes that every kid should know just how amazing the chess teachers are.
Maxim is proud of “all the winning” the team did this weekend!
Noah C. was proud of creating an intense competition and battle against the #1 player in the state!
Mr. Cooke felt a surge of nervousness and anxiousness as he stepped into the tournament. Uncertainty plagued him—he didn’t know what the outcome would be. The entire event stretched on for about 5.5 hours, each moment filled with tension. It wasn’t until Hour 4 that a glimmer of hope appeared, and he realized they were doing really well. Then, just 30 minutes before the final round, he finally found out they were going to State! The whole team erupted with excitement and joy, their cheers echoing with pure passion!
Teacher Noah couldn't be there at the tournament because of a prior commitment with his outrigger canoe team. Even while on the water, he stayed deeply connected—receiving updates from Kyle and passionately cheering for the Dolphins the entire time!
Oliver B is a 1st grader who made it to regionals! He joined the 2nd-5th grade club in February and has managed to work himself up!
Congratulations to all our Chess Students!
Congratulations, Ms. Angie! Our beloved Arleta staff member, Theater Club VIP and former Arleta parent Angela Morris is now a substitute teacher in PPS! Ms. Angie has been an Arleta para educator for many years and while she’ll be dearly missed on a daily basis, we’re so fortunate she’s now an Arleta Guest Teacher (her first day subbing for us was today!). A message from Ms. Angie for you~
Hello families,
It has been my pleasure to work with the Arleta students and families for these past 10 years. Working here first as a SUN instructor and then a para educator in both the learning center and SES room, I have learned so much and developed a love for working with children. This led me on a journey to pursue my Masters in Teaching. Last August I received my teaching license and have been working on moving into becoming a classroom teacher. I decided to apply for a substitute teaching position and was recently hired! It is with both sadness and joy that I move into this new position. Leaving Arleta will be hard for me. This community means so much and has taught me so much. Thank you for entrusting me with your students. Thank you for being the best community ever!!
With love, Ms. Angie
I’m pleased to share that our wonderful Behavior Intervention Specialist, Ms. Denise, has moved into Ms. Angie’s former role. Ms. Denise is such a wonderful teacher, and we didn’t have the funding to maintain her position / hours for next year. While we are already greatly missing Ms. Denise in the support she’s been providing many of our students all year, it’s great to have her on our SES Team, and to know she’ll be with us next year. Click here to read more about Ms. Denise.
SPRING “PERSONALITY” PICTURE DAY!
Dorian Studios will be coming again to Arleta this year on April 17 for an optional picture day. This picture day is an opportunity to have your student’s pictures taken again (we have already had our Fall Picture day as well as Retake Picture Day).
These pictures are a bit more unique in that you will be able to choose a background for your student’s picture. The order forms will be arriving this week if you are interested in having your student’s picture taken again. You may also order online. Again, this is an OPTIONAL picture day.
Warmly,
Lisa

COLLECTING BOOKS TO SWAP AT ART & LITERACY NIGHT
Do you have some once-loved kid books around that don't get the attention they deserve? Let's change that!

Luminous and clever, Connect the Stars takes on some hefty topics of the day—bullying, understanding where you fit in, and learning to live with physical and mental challenges—all in a joyous adventure kids will love!

The Single Subject Acceleration
Math process application window begins March 1st. This process is open to 2nd - 4th grade students. The process outlined in the PPS administrative directive on acceleration and on the TAG Website, allows students who qualify to accelerate through the next grade level. The decision to accelerate students is made by the TAG Department, with input from teachers, a variety of district administered assessments and the paper/pencil assessment. The timeline for SSA-M:
March 1 - 31st applications accepted via the TAG Website
April 1 - 30th evaluation process
May 31- family notification
June 1 - 30th appeals process
July 1 - family notification
For questions regarding your student’s potential for SSA-M, please contact your student’s teacher. For questions regarding the SSA-M process, please contact the TAG Department at ppstag@pps.net
