Dear HSSD Families,

As I reflect on my second year as superintendent, I am filled with incredible gratitude for the support you consistently show our students and staff!

🎓 Strategic Framework Update

We are working diligently on A Framework for Our Future, our strategic framework. We have made good progress within our Priority Areas, and I am excited about where this next year will take us. Our Strategic Framework allows us to focus our efforts on four key Priority Areas:

  • Educational Excellence
  • Staff Experience
  • Student Engagement
  • Operational Excellence and Fiscal Responsibility

âś… Referendum Thank You

One of the most significant milestones of the 2026-27 school year was the successful passage of our referendum questions. Thank you to everyone who voted in the April 7, 2026 election. Because of your support, we can make our schools an even better place for every child to learn! See the project timeline and updates on our website.

Schematic Design, the first architectural design step, is nearly complete at Bay Port, Meadowbrook, and Howard. Over the summer, Bay Harbor saw updates in flooring, painting, and HVAC. Lineville and Suamico will begin visioning team meetings in the fall. As construction begins, school leaders will communicate with families and staff at affected schools regarding construction updates.

🧰 What We Build Next

As we continue to work through our Strategic Framework and continue forward after the successful referendum questions, we are looking to build upon our success. Our mission is to “...work together with families and community to ensure that our students have the knowledge and skills to succeed in a changing world.”

We will continue to put student needs first, support each other’s well-being and growth, maintain consistent and high expectations, communicate openly, and adopt new and effective teaching methods to improve our work. This is a team effort, and we look forward to partnering with you as we begin the 2026-27 school year!

Stronger Together,

Mark Smith, Ed.D.

  • Parent Portal Access - You can access your Infinite Campus Parent Portal here. This link can also be found on our Families page under Logins. View Infinite Campus Parent Portal information and resources on the HSSD Technology page.

To do this, follow the steps below.

Coming Soon: ParentSquare for HSSD Communications Coming Soon: ParentSquare for HSSD Communications

Beginning in the second semester of the 2026-27 school year, ParentSquare will be used for two-way communications between HSSD adults and students. This change will keep HSSD in compliance with a new Wisconsin law called Act 89.

To provide a consistent experience, ParentSquare will eventually replace the many tools our HSSD adults use to communicate with students, including direct text messages, social media, Snapchat, WhatsApp, TeamSnap, etc. This change will apply to athletics and extracurricular organizations.

Implementation timeline:

  • First semester: HSSD communications department will conduct a ParentSquare pilot program. The pilot will include coaches, teachers, etc.
  • Second semester: ParentSquare will be implemented district-wide for two-way communications.
  • 2027-28 school year: ParentSquare will replace SchoolMessenger district-wide for one-way communications. At this time, ParentSquare will be used for both two-way and one-way communications.

Benefits for families:

  • One place for all school and district communications
  • Families have the ability to choose how they receive notifications
    • Email, text, mobile app
    • Each communication arrives separately or as a digest once per day
  • Automatic language translation
    • Allows students, families, and staff to communicate in their preferred languages

Right now, there is nothing for you to do. More communication will be shared as second semester approaches. If you have questions, please contact Kimberly Uelmen, Executive Director of Communications, at kimbuelm@hssdschools.org.

What is Act 89?

Act 89 is a new law that helps keep students safe, specific to communication between school adults and students. Staff will be trained to identify unsafe behavior, and Act 89 strongly recommends that districts move to a single channel for two-way communication that is safe and secure.
