Pastor's Notes
Names.
I want to tell you about my friend Eldon, and the strange part is that we almost didn't meet.
In 2002 I started college in Minnesota, at a school of about 3,000 students, the same year they hired a new campus pastor. His name was Eldon Fry. I never got to know him. I don't think I ever even met him. I transferred after a year, and he stayed a few more before heading back to Central PA, where he'd served before. I didn't think I'd ever hear his name again.
More than a decade later, half a country from where we started, our paths finally crossed in Central PA, and we became great friends. And even Faith and I moved to South Dakota in 2019, and it didn't change a thing. Every time we made it back to Central PA, we met at Caffe 101 in Boiling Springs or at Dieners in Mechanicsburg.
Here's what I always say about him. He saw things in me I couldn't see. The things I thought were impossible for me, even the ones I wasn't brave enough to say out loud, seemed like nothing to him. Sometimes I honestly wasn't sure I knew the person he did. When I didn't believe I could become who God was calling me to be, he believed enough for the both of us.
Eldon died last December.
This Sunday is All Saints, the day the church stops to say names. Not just the ones in stained glass, but the ones who sat across a table from us and saw more than we did. Most of them will never get a statue. Most of you never met Eldon. I'd like you to know his name anyway.
Who's yours? Send a name for Sunday and we'll say it together (Click button below)
What is Holy Club?
"Holy Club" isn't a new name — it's the old one. In the 1720s, a small group of Oxford students got mocked for how seriously they took their faith: methodically praying, studying Scripture, and caring for the poor and imprisoned on a schedule, like it actually mattered. Their critics called them "the Holy Club" as an insult. One of those students was John Wesley. The insult became a movement. The movement became us.
We're giving that name back to our kids — not as a one-time unit, but as an ongoing shape for kids' ministry at Wesley United: faith that's practiced, not just believed. Content runs series-based, right alongside whatever the grown-ups are working through in worship.
Every week follows the same rhythm: Gather, Story, Bands, Mercy Moment, Send. We open together, hear a Bible story, split into smaller age-group "Bands" to talk it through, do something for someone else in the room or the church, and send each other out with the same three questions the earliest Methodists asked themselves — said the same way, every single week, so kids carry it long after they've forgotten which Sunday was which:
• Be Kind (Do No Harm)
• Do Good
• Love God With Your Whole Heart (Stay in Love with God)
Want in? Sign your family up here at the link below👇 And if you'd love to help lead a week, tell a story, or run a Band — we'd love to have you. Reach out to get plugged in as a volunteer.
