Vista Unified School District, a Pre-K through 12th- grade school district serving the Vista and Oceanside, California communities, was named one of San Diego County’s Best School Districts by Niche.com, a national leader in researching schools and connecting students to colleges.

The Great ShakeOut: Annual Earthquake Drill
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10:16 AM, all Vista Unified schools and departments will take part in the annual Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. During the drill, students and staff will practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” then safely evacuate buildings and make sure everyone is accounted for before returning to class. Staff will also be testing communication and safety procedures, just as they would in a real emergency. This is an important practice that helps us make sure our schools are prepared and our students know what to do if an earthquake ever occurs. Please know this is only a drill and no action is needed from families, however, we highly encourage you to practice what to do in the event of an earthquake as well! You can find out what to do in the event of an earthquake, along with other resources, here.

Data Insights: Board Goal 1 - Conditions of Learning
Student achievement is the central purpose of our educational organization. Our district uses a whole child approach to gather a variety of data in order to monitor the overall growth of our students over time. We view multiple measures of success in three specific areas of achievement: behavioral, social-emotional, and academic. Our first Data Insights report of the 25-26 school year highlights VUSD Board Goal 1, which focuses on the conditions of learning that foster behavioral and social-emotional growth for our students. Additional Data Insights issues covering all Board Goals will be published in the coming months, and all issues are available on the VUSD Data Insights webpage. To learn about student success aligned to Board Goal 1, please read Data Insights Issue 1 in the link below:
Día de los Muertos
VUSD's Family And Community Engagement (FACE) Network would like to invite all families, staff, and community members to celebrate Día de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) on October 29, from 3-7 p.m. at the Vista Innovation Center (836 Olive Ave.). This fun-filled event will include honoring loved ones who have passed, taking fun photos, playing Lotería (Mexican Bingo), free souvenirs, learning about the history of this tradition through videos and art activities, movie fun (Coco), hands-on activities (traditional paper flowers & coloring decorative paper skulls), free books, community partners, face-painting, snacks, and much more! We will also be creating our own Lotería cards to make our very own set of VUSD Lotería! You can decorate your own altares (altars) Oct. 27-29 at the VIC.
This event is for ALL to join together in culture and unity. Many cultures have very similar traditions and also very different ones in how they celebrate the lives of those gone. We put together this celebration as a way to honor and learn about this tradition, but also as an opportunity for others to share their own cultural traditions and for all of us to come together as a loving community. We will have free traditional treats to enjoy, with food available for purchase. Drop in for 5 minutes or a couple hours and bring the whole family and friends! For more information: FamilyEngagement@vistausd.org or see a Community Liaison.
Congratulations to our September STARS of Excellence and Innovation
Suicide Prevention
September was Suicide Prevention Month, a designation intended to increase awareness and encourage activities that save lives. The Thrive Alliance Group explains that it is critically important: suicide is unfortunately the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and young adults.
Vista Unified has a robust social-emotional learning and mental health support system via school counselors, social workers, psychologists, and outside providers such as Palomar Family Health, Rady Children’s, and Lifeline. Please see the parent newsletter, drafted by social workers, for ways to support our children and address the topic of suicide prevention. Click HERE.
