September 11, 2026
We have had a great short (long) week in 6th grade! Our students are really starting to get into the swing of things. We are looking forward to the Bear Crawl next week (see updates on that here)! Don't forget to register your student for PLUM by September 18th.
Have a great weekend!

Battle of the Books
We're excited to invite your child to join Pine Lane's Battle of the Books (BOTB) club this year! BOTB is a team-based reading competition designed to build literacy skills, foster a love of reading, and encourage friendly collaboration among students. Participants read a curated list of books together as a team, then compete against other teams by answering questions about the content—similar to a quiz bowl format. It's a wonderful opportunity for students in grades 3-6 to strengthen comprehension and critical thinking skills while making new friends who share their enthusiasm for reading. The club meets every Monday morning from 8:00-8:55 AM, and the cost to participate is $30. We'll be hosting a Parent Info Meeting on September 8th at 8:00 AM in the North Library to share more details about the program, expectations, and how you can support your child throughout the season. We hope you'll join us!
If you have any questions, reach out to Ms. Simon!
Bear Crawl
Academic Updates
Math - Ms. Simon
All Students took their decimals quizzes on Friday. Corrections or makeup tests will be Monday and Retakes will be Tuesday. There will not be any testing after Tuesday.
We spent pretty much the entire week reviewing division of decimals. Students had to remember what to do with the decimal, when and how to move it (place value), and when to bring down zeros. Thursday was spent reviewing for the quiz today and students were encouraged to create notecards to study and use on the test. Next week following test corrections and retakes, we will move into multiplication of fractions.
Polar Bears
This week we jumped into multiplication and division of fractions. Many students already knew the process to this from lsat year! We reviewed how to turn mixed numbers into improper fractions, how to simplify, and how to cross multiply (dividing shortcut). Next week we will review fractions on Monday, take the Topic 1 Test on Tuesday, and then move into rational and irrational numbers.
Reading - Ms. Eliason
Writing - Mr. Crump
Next week students will go restart the writing process this time focusing on comparing two sources. We will go deeper into each part of cycle to help them build up their ability to write independently.
Science & Social Studies - Ms. Hines
On Wednesday, due to the internet outage, we continued work on our Island Maps. If students did not finish their Island Maps, they were sent home to be completed over the next week. Students will need to have these completed and turned in by Friday September 18th, which is also the day of our Unit 1 Test.
STEM - Ms. Kinner
We are in the middle of our first unit in STEM. This unit will cover an introduction to the Engineering Design Process, creating a makerspace character using different materials , and beginning our podcasts on the Global goals. We will continue next time we meet to finalize the podcasts and show how we can take action with one of the goals.
The STEM room could use some cardboard tubes, like paper towel tubes and some soft cardboard, like boxes for crackers, granola bars, and cereal. Please send them to the Innovation Lab at North.
We are enjoying our time together as engineers:)
Classroom Store
Our students will be using ClassBank this year, which is a digital classroom economy platform. At the end of each week, students will have the opportunity to purchase things with the money they earn from our classroom stores. Due to this, the 6th Grade Teachers are looking for items (candy, chips, fruit, fidgets, snacks, and little trinkets) to stock our classroom stores.
If you are able, please send items in with your students this week, or throughout the year!
