Melville Mission
In partnership with families and community, the mission of Melville Elementary School is to provide all students with a strong academic foundation through diverse and challenging instruction in a safe and nurturing environment enabling them to achieve their greatest potential while developing self-confidence, respect, responsibility, compassion and a love of learning.
Dear Melville Families,
Thank you, Melville families, for another wonderful week of learning and growing together!
This week, all students in Grades K–4 participated in an engaging and informative fire safety presentation thanks to our partners at the Portsmouth Fire Department. We are grateful for their time and dedication in helping keep our children safe.
On Friday, we celebrated our Blue Ribbon Award with our students in mind! We rocked out to the Toe Jam Puppet Band, enjoyed festive decor, and had blue treats. A heartfelt thank-you to our families and to our incredible Melville Parent-Teacher Group for your support in hosting such a beautiful and meaningful day for our school community.
We are so proud of our Melville family — what a special week! 💙✨
All thes best,
Principal Laurie

Social Emotional Support
Your child’s teacher has completed the Fall SAEBRS screener, a tool we use to support students’ social, emotional, and academic well being. It helps us identify students who may need extra support in three areas:
Social Behavior interacting with peers and adults,
Academic Behavior staying focused and completing tasks, and
Emotional Behavior managing feelings like worry or frustration.
Here are some suggestions on how families can support these areas:
Social:
Playdates or Social Outings: Arrange small group activities to practice friendship skills.
Model Conversations at Home: Practice greetings, listening skills, and polite conversation during family time.
Praise Positive Social Interactions: Point out and reinforce kind behavior when it occurs.
Emotional:
Emotion Naming Practice: Encourage children to label and talk about their feelings at home.
Daily Check Ins: Ask about highs and lows of the day and validate emotions.
Teach Coping Strategies: Use books, visuals, or games to teach deep breathing, counting, or sensory techniques.
Academic:
Set a Homework Routine: Choose a regular time and calm spot for homework each day.
Encourage Perseverance: Support your child in breaking larger tasks into smaller steps and celebrate their effort and persistence.
- Stay Connected with Teachers: Maintain open communication about your child’s progress and work together on strategies for success.
- Encourage Perseverance: Help your child break tasks into manageable parts and praise effort.
Communicate with Teachers: Stay informed about academic progress and collaborate on strategies.

Safety First
Visiting Melville
Dear Melville School Community,
As many of you are aware, in accordance with Portsmouth School Department policy, Melville Elementary School has a new visitor system in our vestibule. This system is used to sign guests into our building by scanning a driver’s license and verifying your identity with a comparison photo.
Please note that any person that is entering our school building for a meeting or an event is REQUIRED to sign in.
In order to expedite the sign in process, we are strongly encouraging all families to download the app and create your profile today. You may do so by scanning the QR code below or by visiting the App Store or Google Play Store and searching for Raptor Safe.
For any questions or for assistance contact the main office. Thank you for your help in keeping our school safe.
Safety Updates
Effective Monday, November 3, our district will fully implement the “I Love U Guys” Standard Response Protocol, which will standardize our approach to safety across all schools.
Attendance Matters
As we enter the winter months, it’s especially important for students to attend school regularly so they can stay on track with learning and maintain strong connections with their teachers and peers. Consistent attendance helps children build good routines and prevents them from falling behind academically or socially. Parents can help by encouraging healthy habits—like getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, washing hands often, and dressing warmly for the weather. If you are questioning if you should send your child to school, here are our school guidelines regarding illness. Working together, we can keep students healthy, learning, and thriving all winter long.
If your child is absent, tardy or dismissed early for medical appointments, please provide the school with documentation of this so the absence can be excused. For more information on excused vs. unexcused absences, please see the PSD Attendance Policy

Discussions revolved around the benefits that medicine offers when used correctly and students identified risks of using medicine improperly.
