LITTLE BIT ABOUT JINIE OOI
Ms. Jinie Ooi Jia Yee is a second-year Accounting student at University of Malaya. She is from Penang, Butterworth. She knew the existence of UMAC when she was a first-year undergraduate. She is always keen on fun-packed interactive games organized by UMAC in their annual interaction week (I-Week). Furthermore, she is also impressed by the industry career talk which is very informative and useful to her.
UMAC, HER CUP OF TEA
UMAC is her cup of tea, she said that: “Never has the eagerness to indulge in any club but in UMAC. I have found the right destination. It will suit my working style!” She was passionate enough to join UMAC events that she found her true joy in here.
A GREAT START
Her interest on UMAC was kick-started when Jinie joined her first event, UMAC Challenge Day (UCD) 2015. It was a one day event whereby participants will run around Kuala Lumpur for an explorace. She played her role as a junior executive in Programme Department. The event was very successful and drives in the satisfaction to its extent in Jinie. This is the reason why she desired to be a programmer for another upcoming challenging event which is Accounting Camp 2015! “Dare to Change” is what she learnt from her Head of Department, Mr Goh Kee Xuan. For instance, during that event, Fear Factor was the theme. So, Mr. Goh used animals to highlight the theme. This creative decision has made Jinie to realize that she have to be ready to change and adapt herself to the growing world. Now, that realization was successful as she is the Head of Department of Programme for MASC 2016. Furthermore, she applies the family concept to make stronger bond between the department members and herself. This concept, in turn, not only focuses on the success of the event, ideas and work tasks but also pay close attention on every member’s feelings.
DIFFERENCE ROLE, SAME SPIRIT
During our sharing session with her, she explained the differences between the role as junior members and the Head of Department itself. She said that executive members only follow the instruction and complete the task from their head, but in the case of a Head of Department, Jinie took the initiative to plan from A to Z for her members. As a Head of Department, she has more responsibility, not only towards the event but also her department members’ learning curve. Another big challenge for Jinie is to cope up with her new role to become a Head of Programme Department in Malaysia Accounting Student Convention (MASC) 2016 especially when the event was clashing with another event and her time was overlapping. This is the time for Jinie to take action to cooperate and coordinate with the Central Committee of the related event to solve rising problems.
NO REGRET IN ANY PATHWAY THAT GROW US
“In the end, eventually we just regret the challenge we didn’t take.” Jinie was selected to be a marketing member during the Interaction Week (I-Week). This time she tried hard to achieve better improvement as she dealt with totally different job scope compared with programme department. In marketing department, she enjoyed learning new things like how she enjoyed doing overtime in Programme Department previously. In addition, she loves to stay overnight together, have fun and also communicate with her members. She implied that she had never regretted being a marketing member during I-Week as she accepted the challenge at the first place.
LAST WORD
Jinie is here to advise all the juniors to be ready to accept and make a change when they join UMAC. Open-mindedness is the main tool that set to develop the special ability and characteristics when organizing an event no matter it is internal or external. Every task you are given by your Head of Department is for you to give and show your full commitment in it. Accept and try it before you judge and comment. Last piece of word from Jinie:” If you do not change, you do not grow. If you do not grow, you are not really living.”
