Belize’s Renaissance Woman, Dr. Corinth Morter-Lewis

Ocean Academy is truly blessed to have Dr. Corinth Morter-Lewis as a member of the faculty. She is a shining example of how much a woman can achieve.

Corinth Irene Morter-Lewis is a Belizean educator and poet. She has served as the President of the University of Belize and as President of the Governing Board of International Institute of UNESCO for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Corinth Irene Morter was born in Belize City, British Honduras, and received her primary education at Ebenezer School. She began her career as a clerical assistant for the Government of Belize and later studied to be a teacher. She completed university studies at the University of New Brunswick in Canada and graduated in 1980 with a master's degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She then pursued a doctorate at the University of Alberta, where she earned her PhD in Psychology of Education. She began teaching at the Belize Technical High School, which later became the Belize Technical College, later becoming a department head and Vice-Principal there.

She served as the acting President of the University of Belize between 2010 and 2011, having previously served as its President from January 2003 to June 2007. In 2008, she began working as the President of the Governing Board of International Institute of UNESCO for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, having previously served as vice president.

Corinth Morter-Lewis Biography Wikipedia

Lifetime Belizean educator, author, poet and playwright, Dr. Corinth Morter-Lewis, described by Governor-General Sir Colville Young as “a true Renaissance woman”.

"In Belize, the name Corinth Morter-Lewis is well-known and highly regarded since the poet and educator is considered by many as the epitome of patriotism in Belize. Dr. Morter-Lewis has had a long, impressive career in Education, and she has also greatly contributed to Belize’s literary landscape. Indeed, every morning Belizean children stand proudly, hands over hearts swelling with pride as they pledge their allegiance to the country by reciting Dr. Morter-Lewis’ poem Tribute to the Belizean Flag”.
~ Restore Belize

“The writings of Corinth Morter-Lewis express her private thoughts and feelings over the last four, almost five decades, as she has gone about her business of construction of the nation. These writings provide an important insight into those Belizean decades from nation building through second guessing and soul searching to our ongoing crisis of youth.”

Ocean Academy Girls Rising

EDUCATE GIRLS, CHANGE THE WORLD!

On November 17, 2017, the first meeting of the Ocean Academy Girls Rising took place. The group was founded by Ms. Rubiceli Keme (Ocean Academy class of 2019) and Ms. Florence Goldson (Yoga Teacher). Rubiceli was a strong advocate for forming Girls Rising. She was exasperated by social media posts that dragged girls and women down and told them that they were “not enough”. She said, “The girls needed to be more supportive and to motivate one another”.

The first guest speaker was Ms.Thandiwe Diego, a leader of GirlPOWA in Dangriga. After that inspirational talk from Ms. Diego, the group started to gain more girls and they soon became a family. From that first meeting, it quickly progressed to something phenomenal. Each year they welcome new girls. The girls share their experiences, they motivate and support each other, and much more.

Girls Rising has become a safe place for girls from all backgrounds to express their emotions without fear of criticism. They help each other to rise above their feelings of dejection and aspire to living happy, productive lives.

What makes OA special?

Ocean Academy is truly a one-in-a-million school we have here in Belize. Not only does OA promote the OA Family concept and a sense of "belonging", but OA also prioritizes real-world skills and applications in any and all of their undertakings. OA also ensures that each student who graduates, leaves some type of legacy behind where that graduating class "lives on". Our most recent graduating class left a legacy behind that even won first place in Belize's Youth Innovation Challenge. They came up with an online business that helps earn money! Thus, OA also helps students earn and understand the value of an income. If they don't have enough money to go to school, that's alright; they just need to join our Bike with a Purpose/Social Enterprise Program. It earns them money for school, their pocket and enhances their communication and professionalism skills - not to mention preparing them for a career in tourism at the same time. (Talk about real world skills, right?)

What is your favorite thing about working at Ocean Academy?

I believe my favorite thing about working at Ocean Academy is the Leadership, ethics, morals and overall working environment. Our principal truly cares about each and every single person who is a part of OA. The values and beliefs that she displays in this way is truly infectious as it even makes you, as a person, want the same goals for OA. I particularly like that she instills her level of professionalism, her level of diplomacy and problem-solving skills into you to an extent where you truly want the best for your colleagues and students, as well as yourself. I believe that the saying, "Leadership can either make an organization or break an organization" has never been truly reflected for the best, anywhere else.
