Message From Superintendent Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong Message From Superintendent Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong

zoom_out_map

Dear Norfolk Public Schools’ Families:

During the month of March, we were filled with excitement and pride as we reflected on the tremendous progress being made throughout our school division. March is a month for reflection, growth, and recognition, and it offers us a special opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students, staff, and community. This month, we honored the contributions that make our schools thrive, and we invited our families to join us in acknowledging several key observances that are deeply rooted in the values of inclusivity, respect, and creativity that define our school community.

A major highlight this month was the Big Feet Meet, a highly anticipated event that brought together students of all abilities for a day of friendly competition in a supportive, inclusive environment. This event was a powerful reminder of our commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their abilities. The Big Feet Meet celebrated not only athleticism but also the strength that comes from supporting one another. It was a testament to the power of inclusivity and the importance of fostering an environment where all students can shine, no matter their challenges or differences.

In addition to the Big Feet Meet, we were proud to celebrate School Social Work Week, a time to honor the professionals who work tirelessly to support the mental health and well-being of our students. Social workers play a crucial role in providing the resources, guidance, and advocacy that our students need to succeed academically and personally. They are instrumental in ensuring that every child has access to the tools and support necessary for success, and we are deeply grateful for their unwavering dedication to our students' success.

March also marked Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the invaluable contributions women have made to our society throughout history. This year’s theme, "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations," emphasized the pivotal role women have played as educators, mentors, and leaders in shaping the future. This observance reminded us of the lasting impact women have had in empowering future generations.

Additionally, we were excited to celebrate Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month, two important observances that highlight the transformative power of the arts in education. Creativity and self-expression are vital to student success, and we take great pride in celebrating the artistic talents of our students who contribute to the vibrancy of our schools.

We we are also delighted to invite families and our community to participate in Family University on March 29, 2025, at Booker T. Washington High School, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This exciting event will offer parents and families an incredible opportunity to engage with our schools, learn valuable tools to support student success, and connect with resources designed to empower you.

As we move forward in the school year, I encourage you to stay engaged with your child’s education and take advantage of the many opportunities to connect with our schools. Whether through parent-teacher conferences, division-wide events, or supporting student performances and exhibitions, your involvement makes a lasting difference.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are building a strong foundation for our students to succeed.

If You Miss School, You Miss Out!

Across Norfolk Public Schools, there is an exciting energy building as schools creatively and enthusiastically emphasize the importance of being present, on time, and ready to learn each day! From vibrant classroom activities to engaging school-wide initiatives, we are proving that attendance truly counts at NPS and setting our students up for success, one day at a time!

This friendly competition underscores a vital message: When students miss school, they miss out. Chronic absenteeism, missing 10% or more of school days for any reason, has a significant impact on learning. It can hinder early reading skills, middle school achievement, and even high school graduation.

We want to thank Crossroads School for being able to pivot during the recent unexpected snow days in late January. The Dolphins proudly brought the NPS Attendance Flag to the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood, all while continuing to celebrate their spirit week with enthusiasm! Crossroads, you make us NPS Proud! From the Academy of Discovery at Lakewood to Little Creek Elementary School, the attendance challenge is poppin’ with much more in store!

Remember to keep the lines of communication open by letting us know if there is something standing in the way of getting your child(ren) to school. We want to help so that we can continue to build on our promising growth in academic achievement for the rest of the school year, as well as strive toward equity and excellence for all… No Matter What!

Say it with us: “If you miss school, you miss out!”

All Norfolk Reads Kickoff & Read Across America Day

At Norfolk Public Schools, we believe that Literacy is our Rock! Reading opens doors to new adventures, sparks curiosity, and builds a strong foundation for success. Research tells us that students who read just 14.2 minutes a day encounter more than one million words each year—helping them grow as readers and learners. That’s why we’re thrilled to bring back All Norfolk Reads this spring!

This year, we’re stepping up to the plate for a grand reading adventure with Little Rhino: My New Team by Ryan Howard and Krystle Howard. From March 7 to March 26, families across Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk will all read the same book, at the same time—turning reading into a powerful, shared experience!

Here’s how it works:

  • Every elementary family will receive a copy of the book to read together.

  • Follow the reading calendar—one chapter at a time.

  • Listen along with chapter recordings to bring the story to life.

  • Explore fun discussion questions & activities with our resource guide.

Why does this matter?

Because when families read together, kids become stronger readers and develop a lifelong love of books. Plus, reading as a community creates a special kind of magic—imagine thousands of families across the City of Norfolk talking about the same story at the dinner table, on the way to school, or at bedtime!

Make the Most of Family Reading Time

  • Create a reading ritual – Snuggle up and make reading a daily habit.

  • Talk about the story – Share favorite moments and guess what happens next.

  • Make it fun – Take turns reading, do voices, or act out scenes.

  • Connect it to real life – Ask how your child relates to Little Rhino’s journey.

We can’t wait to read along with you and celebrate the joy of books together. Let’s make this our biggest All Norfolk Reads yet.

Northside Middle School Teacher Successfully Renews NBCT Certification

We're thrilled to celebrate the continued dedication of English Teacher, Mrs. Isabel Main, a National Board Certified Teacher at Northside Middle School, who has successfully renewed her certification this year! Her commitment to professional excellence sets a shining example for both her students and colleagues.

Renewing a National Board Certification is a significant accomplishment that reflects a teacher's ongoing commitment to professional growth and excellence. The process involves a comprehensive assessment of a teacher’s knowledge, skills, and effectiveness. Renewing the certification means the teacher has not only maintained the high standards set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), but has also continued to enhance their teaching practices, engage in professional learning, and reflect on their impact on students. This renewal demonstrates sustained dedication to improving education and ensures the teacher stays at the forefront of best practices in the field.

Congratulations, Ms. Main, on this impressive achievement!

School Board of the City of Norfolk Approves Its Proposed Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2026

The School Board of the City of Norfolk approved Superintendent Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong’s proposed $772.9 million expenditure plan as its proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2026 during its business meeting held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The plan contains four funds: (1) the operating budget, (2) capital improvement projects, (3) school nutrition, and (4) grants and other special programs. The largest portion of the expenditure plan is the $450.2 million operating budget, which underwrites the day-to-day operations of the school division.

This expenditure plan was developed on the foundation of five priorities: (1) employee compensation; (2) employee recruitment and retention; (3) right-sizing the school division; (4) safety, security, and building maintenance; and (5) additional resources for students and schools.

Key highlights include:

  • Salary Increases: a 4.5% salary increase for full-time, contracted staff;

  • Increased Starting Pay for Teachers: an increase from $57,500 to $60,088;

  • One-Time Bonus: a 2.2% bonus for full-time, contracted employees who are at the top of their salary scales;

  • Health Care Insurance: no increase in health insurance premiums for staff;

  • A New Equity and Excellence Learning Center (EELC) at Southside STEM Academy at Campostella. Currently, there are four EELCs: Jacox Elementary School, P.B. Young, Sr. Elementary School, Ruffner School, and Booker T. Washington High School. These centers provide wraparound services, including mental health and emotional support, medical resources, and family engagement programs;

  • Additional Resources for Students: additional staff to assist English Learners (ELs), students with disabilities, and increased student attendance support; and

  • Enhanced School Security: investments in additional security cameras, security vehicles, and increased pay for police officers covering student athletic events.

The $253 million capital improvement budget contains funding for the replacement of Maury High School, heating and air conditioning replacements at identified schools, improvements to wall systems at identified schools, the renovation of Camp Young’s swimming pool, continued renovations at Booker T. Washington High School, and new school buses.

The statutory deadline for submitting the School Board’s approved proposal to the Norfolk City Council is April 1, 2025. City Council will adopt a municipal budget in May, which includes an operating budget for Norfolk Public Schools.

I'm honored to be named Teacher of the Month for the BTW EELC! The EELC program is a fantastic opportunity for both students and staff, as it supports the incredible ideas we collaborate on together. In Art Club, students are working towards an in-house craft fair and table, where they showcase their creativity and craftsmanship with the school. One aspect I admire is that some students who don’t initially see themselves as "artists" contribute by assisting their peers, building a supportive and inclusive environment. Our club is truly close-knit, and it’s been such a joy to see the kids get excited about our work. They’ve even convinced me to hold Art Club more than once a week! Through this, the students are learning valuable lessons in community, hard work, and creative expression. It’s a privilege to be part of such a wonderful group!
