DKHS WEEKLYNEWSLETTER"Do A Job"

April 18, 2025 April 18, 2025

We’ve had a busy week back from break here at DKHS. PSAT 9/10 and SAT testing were on Thursday. Big Shout Out to Mrs. Boorsma, our district testing coordinator, who handles all of those details. I’m excited to see how our kids performed. The athletic event schedule has picked up dramatically, and we have games almost every night of the week from here until the end of the year. I know that Dr. Munger and Mr. Myers would love extra hands to help with tickets, scoring, timing, or many other roles you could play to help us host events. Please reach out to them if you can volunteer some time. On Wednesday, we hosted our only home track meet and honored our seniors. Looks like another strong track season is unfolding for our guys and girls. We were also able to break out our new timing system, which will allow us to host bigger invitational events as well as MHSAA tournament meets. On Thursday, our varsity golfers took first place out of 9 teams in the DK/Kent Enyart Invitational at Mullenhurst. We had 4 of the top 10 finishers, with Grady Matteson taking overall medalist honors shooting 75, Jason Marshall took 3rd with an 80, Tyler Howland and Carter Brickley tied for 6th with rounds of 82. Those are all really good scores, and if they play like that, they will be a state-qualifying team later in May. Good work, fellas.

We have been reminding kids about working to finish strong, as the year-end is just around the corner. Getting to that credit-earning level is the first step, and then improving from there to have some room for error with exams and how that can impact their final grade. Now is the time to really work at not having missing assignments, being in school every day, and continuing to give their best effort so they can find success at the end of the year. This is particularly important for our seniors who might need some credits to get to the 22 needed for graduation. I want to encourage lots of communication with your students and with their teachers if you have any questions or concerns about the progress and standing of their grades.

Tuesday, the 22nd, we will honor our Top 10 from the Class of 2025 at the board meeting. Come on out and celebrate these elite students who have worked very hard to earn this level of success. I am proud of all of our kids, but these 10 deserve some special recognition. Also, next week our band will head to the State Festival on Wednesday at Otsego. They perform around noon that day, and they are worth the trip as they continue to score at a high level in competitions. Our theatre group is making good progress and will have 3 performances in early May. Details and tickets will be available in the coming days.

This week, we hosted a parent night to present some new courses we plan to offer in the fall. Today we visited with the 8th graders to talk about FFA and also give them the updates on those new courses. We will do the same for the high school students next week. Please be in communication with your students about these great new opportunities, and call Mr. Vanhoose, our guidance counselor, if you have any questions. Courses like our new IGNITE Manufacturing Modules, Introduction to Nursing, EMT, Farm to Table, Makerspace, and Micro Bit Computing, and others. These are exciting opportunities for our kids with hands-on, real, and relevant learning that are prepping our DK graduates for college and careers.

Have a Happy Easter weekend.

Senior Splash Letter Senior Splash Letter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to bring to your attention a game organized by a group of seniors called "Senior Assassin." Let me begin by stating that this is not a school-sponsored game or event. This is a game that is popular with teenagers across the country, more specifically, seniors. To our understanding, the students join on an app called Splashin. Students are assigned targets by the organizers, and they have a timeline in which they are to "assassinate" the other contestants. At the end of each round, the remaining students are assigned new targets, and the game continues. Students use Nerf guns, squirt guns, or other toy weapons to "eliminate" the other contestants. They develop a set of rules that every member has to follow, including that the game cannot be played on school property. The objective is to be the last one remaining.

Seniors talk about playing this game each year, and every year, the response from the administration is that this game may not be played on or near school property or at school events. Additionally, they are advised not to participate, and we have shared the dangers and risks involved in participating. The seniors were informed of this during a senior meeting held on Friday. DK does not endorse senior pranks or games like this. Participation in events like this on or near school property can lead to consequences, including, but not limited to, suspension and being unable to participate in the graduation ceremony or other school events. Although intended by students to be fun, this game can lead to serious issues and consequences.

We had an incident at a nearby school a few years ago related to this game that led to law enforcement being contacted. Each year, we hear of issues surrounding this game in local communities and across the United States. People who see vehicles parked outside of houses at night or someone hiding in bushes with masks on and Nerf or water guns may think that these are people intending to harm someone else. They may not realize that it is just a Nerf gun or a water gun that the student is holding. This can lead to police involvement. Students running from each other or screaming as someone chases them can lead others around them to believe that they are in danger. Not everyone understands that this is a game organized by students to have fun. Additionally, the game has led to incidents of reckless driving, accidents, students getting hurt, and law enforcement involvement.

We do not want to see incidents like this occur or have students who are engaging in this game unintentionally cause panic in our school or community. I encourage you to speak with your student about their participation in this game. Students who are participating in this game, or any other senior prank, on or near school property or at school-related events will have consequences, including, but not limited to, not participating in the graduation ceremony or suspension.

Please encourage your student to make good decisions. We want our seniors to have fun, and we want them to enjoy their last few weeks of school, but to do so in a safe manner that is appropriate for school.

DK FFA Students Shine at MSU Floriculture Contest! DK FFA Students Shine at MSU Floriculture Contest!

We’re excited to share a proud moment from the Delton Kellogg FFA Chapter!

This week, four of our outstanding students — Madison Calgaro, Jayla Standlick, Maci Freiberg, and Tori Vandenberg — showcased their skills at Michigan State University’s Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, competing in the State FFA Floriculture Contest.

The competition tested their knowledge of over 100 different flowers and challenged them to create elegant floral arrangements and corsages under pressure — and they rose to the occasion with talent and professionalism. Out of 104 teams from across the state, our DK team earned 85th place, demonstrating impressive skill and dedication in a highly competitive field.

But the impact didn’t stop there. As part of this event, our very own DK students helped bring joy and comfort to others by participating in a community outreach effort with McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital. Their beautiful arrangements and heartfelt contributions were delivered to patients and families, spreading smiles and hope throughout the hospital.

Their small acts of kindness are making a big difference today.

We couldn’t be prouder of these young leaders. Great work, ladies!
