A Message from the President

As quickly as it arrived, fall seems to have slipped right past us. We waited months for cooler weather, and finally, here we are, already deep in the holiday season. This time of year brings joy, excitement, and more than a few extra activities. If you're anything like me, your wife fills your schedules faster than you can blink!

The upcoming break also brings a reminder that the holidays can be hard for many of our students and their families. Some are missing loved ones. Some rely on the routine and safety of school and struggle when they don't have that consistency and safety over the break. Others walk into family gatherings that are far from joyful. In moments like these, the role we play becomes even more meaningful. I know each of you brings compassion into this work every day, because you have a heart for this job. Whether we’re celebrating or simply helping someone survive the season, we often serve as a steady presence in their most chaotic moments.

As we look ahead, TASRO is excited for everything the coming year holds. We hope you’ll be an active part of this growing organization as we roll out new opportunities, including our Annual School Safety Conference. Be sure to explore our updated website, and remember that your regional director and any member of the TASRO Board are always here to support you. Below, you’ll also find resources and ideas to help you and your campus navigate a very busy December.

From all of us at TASRO, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Zach Duer

President

Practice being Mindful to Create Calm Practice being Mindful to Create Calm

  • Gratitude Practice
    • Interrupts Negative thought spirals
    • Helps us focus on the present
  • Noticing (FOND- Find One New Detail)
    • As children we notice all the tiny details because everything is new
    • Create the habit of “stopping to smell the roses” so to speak
    • Stop to really notice the details of something ordinary
  • Mindful breathing
    • Remember the app on your apple watch?
    • Focus on breathing in and out
  • 5-3-2 Plan (Dr. Amit Sood)
    • 5 People (first thing in the morning, think of 5 people that you are grateful for)
    • For the first 3 minutes when you walk in the door, meet your family like a long-lost friend and do not try to judge/change/improve anything in that moment.
    • The first 2 seconds when you see another person, send a silent “I wish you well”.

Try a Digital Declutter Try a Digital Declutter

During the holiday break it is easy to doom scroll to infinity. Take time this December to consider:

  • What are my screentime habits? What real life experiences am I missing being lost in my phone?

  • Delete unnecessary or distracting apps
    • Does this add value?
    • How does this make me feel?
  • Consider a social media fast
  • Set limits for yourself
    • Time
    • Place
  • Pay attention to the content you consume
    • What we focus on we become

Try to Keep a Schedule Try to Keep a Schedule

It's easy to lose track of what day it is, the last time you ate a healthy meal, or when you last showered 😜 Trying to keep some sort of a schedule during the break will make it easier to return in January and it also prevents feelings of overwhelm, anxiety and depression. Sure, sleep in and relax, but don't get lost.

Student Activities Student Activities

  • Gratitude Ornaments (let students color/decorate paper ornaments and write something they are grateful for to hang on a paper tree in the hallway)
  • Snowball Compliments (have students write a compliment about a classmate and then crumple the paper into a "snowball". Have a GENTLE "snowball fight" and have each student read the snowball they pick up)
  • Create homemade holiday cards for the local nursing home. Extra credit for personal delivery (always check about visiting).
  • New Year, Better Me” Vision Boards (Students create mini vision boards with goals, hopes, and positive affirmations for the new year.)
