Principal's Message
Hello Hiteon Families,
We want to express our gratitude to all of you for attending Back to School Night last Thursday. It was a pleasure to see familiar Hiteon families and to meet some new ones as well. We hope that the teacher sessions provided valuable information and will contribute to a successful school year for you and your child(ren). For those who were unable to attend, many teachers have sent out the slide deck and resources they discussed to all families. We are also sharing the slide deck used in the opening session, which you can find here.
This year, Hiteon is making efforts to restore our attendance to pre-pandemic levels at 93%, as last year we were at 83%. Every day of attendance matters. Regular school attendance is crucial for students to make progress in learning and to feel connected to their school community, fostering a deep sense of belonging.
At Hiteon, we monitor attendance every two weeks. If a student's attendance falls below 90%, we ask their classroom teacher to call and check in with the family to see if there is anything the school can do to help address the attendance issue. If the same student continues to be absent, our counselor or social worker will call to inquire about the barriers to attendance and offer support. We have also conducted home visits when necessary. We do understand students become sick and we ask that you keep your child home when they are too sick for school.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year of collaboration with you to ensure that your child(ren) have a successful school year!

Attendance & Student Dismissal Plans
HITEON'S DAILY SCHEDULE
7:30 – Cafeteria opens for breakfast
7:45 - School promptly begins
2:20 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
Classroom instruction begins promptly at 7:45am. Students are expected to be at school and on time every day that they are healthy. Additionally, we appreciate your efforts to schedule appointments after school hours.
We also appreciate your efforts to make sure students enter the school building no earlier than 7:30 am and no later than 7:40 am. Arriving by 7:40 am allows students to calmly report to class and settle before the school day begins at 7:45 am.
ABSENCES
If your child will be absent or arriving late, please call the school at 503-356-2140, follow the prompts to leave a message regarding that absence. Messages may be left in the attendance voice mailbox 24 hours a day. Please call before 8:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. If it is not possible to report the absence before 8:00 a.m., please call the school office, at 503-356-2140. If a student’s parent does not call to report an absence or tardy, a courtesy call will be made to the student’s home to determine the reason for the student not being in school.
SUPERVISION
For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school prior to supervision (7:30) and must NOT remain after supervision hours (2:20) unless they are involved in a supervised after-school activity.
Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:20 PM must have parent supervision.
ATTENDANCE MONITORING
Teachers and the principal will monitor student attendance. The parents of students with excessive absences or tardies will receive written communication from the principal, alerting them to the problem. We will be following ORS 339.065, which states:
Eight unexcused one-half day absences in any four-week period during which the school is in session shall be considered irregular attendance. Students who meet these criteria will be reported to ODE as truant. Excused absences are not to exceed five days in a term of three months or not to exceed ten days in any term of at least six months.
LATE ARRIVAL
A student who is not in the school building at 7:45 a.m. is considered tardy. A student who is tardy must check in at the office before going to class. This procedure not only helps us keep track of student tardiness but also serves to maintain the accuracy of our attendance records.
LEAVING EARLY
Please try to schedule doctor and dentist appointments after school hours whenever possible.
For your child’s safety, our school operates under a closed-campus policy. This policy requires the school office to be notified when:
Parents are taking children out of school for appointments, vacations, or transfers.
Parents or visitors enter the building for any reason.
A child is not allowed to have contact with a specific person by court order.
If you must take your child out of school before the end of the school day, please send a note to the teacher and have the note verified in the office so that your child will be prepared to leave school at the designated time.
When coming to school to pick up your child, please report to the school office. Be prepared to show a photo ID every time you pick up your child early. You must sign your child out in the office. The office will then call your child out of class to meet you in the office. Parents may not go directly to classrooms to get their children.
If a child leaves school and returns to school on the same day, she/he must report to the office before returning to class.
STUDENT DISMISSAL PLANS & CHANGES
At the beginning of the year, teachers ask parents to provide information about students’ regular dismissal plans. Teachers work very hard to ensure students leave school according to these plans.
Any change to a student’s regular dismissal plan requires a written note (dated and signed) from the parent/guardian. This note must be signed by both the teacher and someone from the office. The office staff keeps track of these changes. Parents are encouraged to plan ahead and make changes to student dismissal plans before the child arrives at school. Students will not be allowed to arrange after-school play dates during the school day. If there is a same-day change, you may call the office before 1:30 pm. Also, for safety reasons, we will not release students after 2:00 PM. They will be released at the 2:22 dismissal time. If we receive no written note or phone call, we will always honor the regular plan.

Parking Lot Logistics for Arrival & Dismissal
Please do not park in the Fire Department's parking lot - be a good neighbor.
Arrival
Please do not send students to school before 7:30 a.m. We have no adult supervision until 7:30, and when students arrive at 7:30, they go directly to a waiting area for five minutes or to get breakfast.
Also, remember we have two different building entries depending on your child’s grade level.
Arrival Locations:
Kindergarten, First Grades: Enter at the PURPLE Doors
Second through Fifth Grades: Enter at the YELLOW Doors
Navigating Hiteon’s Parking Lot - see picture below
Yellow Zone entrances from Brockman is open for parking and drop-off.
Do Not block the Fire station driveway on Brockman Rd ( we need to be good neighbors).
(There is no through traffic in these areas)
Purple Zone entrance: There is no parking, drop-off, or pick-up during Arrival or Dismissal (Buses and daycare Drop-off Only).
Drop-off is at the Yellow Zone, but Kindergarteners and First-graders enter the building through the Purple Zone. We prefer you walk your child into Hiteon and/or use our parent drop-off lane.
Students arriving by car will be dropped off at the main entrance (Yellow Entrance) and then walk to their grade-level entrances.
Dismissal Locations:
Walkers & Bike Riders will be dismissed from the playground by their teacher
Bus Riders will walk to the buses near the Purple Doors
Car pickup will be for all grades at the Yellow Doors (Main Entrance)
Every family will receive a pink car pick-up sign at Meet Your Teacher Night. Please make sure to have the pink sign displayed if you pick your child up from school by car. This helps us learn which car belongs to which families, which in turn helps the traffic flow faster at pick-up.
If your child is not able to get out of the car quickly, you may need to park in the parking lot and walk your child to the entrance at arrival time. Remember, for safety, only cross the parking lot at the designated crosswalk located at the Yellow Zone entrance.
Thank you all for your cooperation with the arrival and dismissal procedures.

Medication Needs at School & Too Sick for School
It is URGENT that ALL medications either over the counter and/or prescription medications be checked into the office by a parent or guardian. This even includes such things as cough drops and chap stick.
Medications SHOULD NOT be carried by students in pockets, purses, book bags or backpacks. Students are NOT allowed to self administer at school.
Parents or guardians are required to bring all medications over the counter or prescription to the office in their original packaging (No ziplocks or loose items) and fill out an "Administration of Medication form".
This form is necessary if your child needs to take any type of medication (prescription or over the counter) during school hours, and must be completed by a parent or guardian.
Medication policies are strictly adhered to by school personnel. Please contact the school office at 503-356-2140 if you have questions.

BSD Attendance Campaign for 2024-2025 School Year
School is starting soon! Here are four tips to help your student(s) look forward to attending school every day. Start the school year off right with on-time and consistent attendance!
📌 Set a regular bedtime and wake-up time a few weeks in advance.
📌 Make up silly songs about everyday routines: getting up, eating breakfast and going to school.
📌 Stoke anticipation. When you drive by the school, say “There’s YOUR school!”
📌 Visit with neighbors to see who’s attending the same school. It’s always fun to have a buddy.
Check out the video below to hear what some wise Hiteon students have to say about the importance of good attendance for Kindergarten students to establishes the foundation for relationship building and lifelong learning.

New Volunteer Background Check System
If you haven’t done so already, please reapply to be a volunteer in the Beaverton School District. We’re implementing a new volunteer management system over the summer and need time to process and complete the criminal background checks for all applicants.
Start on the Volunteer webpage on the district website. The entire process — including the review of the Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct training materials — should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
Thank you for prioritizing our students’ safety and for your willingness to volunteer in BSD.
