THE BACK TO SCHOOL EDITION

A Message from Mr. Chesser A Message from Mr. Chesser

Hello Bear Families!

The Year was 1982 - the year I entered Junior High. My birthday was always just a few days before the start of school, and the one thing I wanted most going into junior high was to look cool. At the time, Izod was an extremely popular brand, recognized by the small alligator logo on the left chest side of a polo-style shirt. That is what I wanted for my birthday.

When the day arrived, my parents handed me a box just the right size for a shirt. I was so excited. I ripped the paper off and opened the box to find a 3/4 sleeve, baseball jersey style, t-shirt with an iron-on graphic of a large alligator and a phrase that said "My other shirt is an Izod". In hindsight, it was hilarious; but, my 11 year old self was not amused. My parents thought it was a hoot.

Fortunately, that wasn't the end of it. There was another box. Inside was a kelly green Izod shirt. The first day of school arrived, and I was decked out in my green shirt and a new pair of Levi's 501 jeans, ready to take on the world.

Junior High was a great time. I remember that first day, along with many other memories: making a ton of new friends, making the honor roll , playing football for the first time, getting cast in a theater production, and winning a medal at a speech tournament for poetry reading. All of those experiences helped frame my path.

Your sons or daughters are entering a new school year in one of the most exciting times of their lives. At MJH, we are thrilled to be a part of their journey and honored to help frame their path forward. We can't wait to see them next week. It's going to be an amazing year!

I hope everyone enjoys their last weekend of summer.

Proud to serve Montgomery Junior High,

Tim Chesser

Car Rider Line That is Safe and Efficient Car Rider Line That is Safe and Efficient

NEW INFO about the car rider line.

  • Our first experience with car riding drop off and pick up during The Bear Bash went pretty well. Thanks to all our parents that utilized the car rider line for that event. We noticed one thing that will be important in supporting an efficient drop off process: IF THERE IS A SIDEWALK TO STEP ONTO, PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD HOP OUT AND HEAD ON INSIDE. This is a key factor in supporting efficiency.
  • Also, our immediate neighbors at Stewart Hill Neighborhood (around the curve on Stewart Creek) need our help. Please demonstrate that community feeling of support by recognizing the desire for neighborhood safety and privacy. Please do not utilize the neighborhood streets as a waiting lot for students to walk to or from school. I want to encourage all of our parents to trust the system that we have reimagined (based on research and experience) and utilize the car rider line.
  • Finally, please do not expect perfection from the beginning, especially the first few days of school. This is new for almost everyone involved, and it will take time for both staff and parents to create a habitual pattern. But give it the necessary time, and it will begin working like a clock.

As we get ready to start school on Wednesday, please review the following expectations to support a safe and efficient system to drop off and pick up your students from MJH. There are attached visuals for reference below.

1. All parents are expected to use the car rider line to drop students. Please do not drop students off in the street as this puts them, you and other drivers in harm's way. The area marked in red on the map is a no dropping zone per the newly installed road signs. Please honor these signs for safety sake. If witnessed by administration on morning duty, we will reach out to encourage use of the car rider line.

2. All bus traffic will be facilitated through the bus drive, including special transportation busses. This promotes safety for our special transportation riders by removing them from potentially moving vehicles in the car rider line. It improves efficiency by removing the obstacle and interruption of the line. Cars will be able to move through the line without stopped busses standing in their way.

3. On non-rainy days, the drop-off and pick-up zones are being expanded. See the purple line on the map. There will be large signs and staff along the zone to guide you. Always pull forward until the car in front of you stops. If there is a sidewalk for students to get out on, then it is in the zone. On rainy days, the zone will be shortened. Expect more time to get through the line on rainy days.

4. Walkers: While there is not an official crosswalk on Stewart Creek Rd. at our parking exit, our School Resource Officer is able to assist students crossing the street. All students who walk to school should travel along the grass inside the curb on the South Side of the street, and wait by the officer. They can cross on her direction. The crossing area is marked in blue.

5. Our staff parking lot will be restricted to parking pass holders only between 6:45 and 7:15 am, and after school. If you have a meeting and arrive during these hours, you will have to take the car rider line around to enter. If you are one of those early risers who likes to arrive before 6:45 and wait to drop off your student, we encourage you to wait in the car rider line rather than the parking lot. We are going to be limiting individuals crossing the crosswalk between the parking lot and front doors in order to honor an efficient flow. If your child has special needs, please contact the campus special education office or your child's AP to review options for your child.

6. Staffing: You may have witnessed in the past years only 1 or 2 staff members directing the car rider line. We will have 5 staff members out supporting the efficient flow of traffic.

We are committed to improving all areas of MJH to be nothing less than excellent. Your support in these expectations and changes is greatly appreciated.

Walking to School? Walking to School?

For our Stewart Hill and Montgomery Trace students who walk to school: We want to make sure you make it to and from school safely every day. Please walk to school on the neighborhood side of Stewart Creek until you reach our police officer directing traffic at our car rider exit. Officer Martinez will stop traffic and guide you across to the school sidewalk.

The best way to keep track of your bus rider throughout the year is through the MISD Smart Tag App. This is currently updated with all of your bus needs for the 2026.2027 school year. You can get instructions at our Transportation Web Site Link to get registered instantly. This App provides live route information, and confirmation when your child enters and exits the bus.

A secondary means to access transportation information is through the Skyward parent portal. Please note that 2026.27 information will not be available on Skyward until noon on 8/10.

Special First Day of School Homeroom Special First Day of School Homeroom

When students enter MJH on the first day of school, they will report to one of two areas: The Cafeteria for 6th Graders, and the Gym for 7th and 8th Graders. Staff members will be available to help students identify an alphabet based homeroom by last name. The attached grade level homeroom will be posted for view and reminders. Please locate your child's grade level and last name range and inform them of their homeroom number and teacher. When released from the Cafeteria or Gym on the first day of school, they will report to the designated room to receive the official schedule, ID, and Chromebook (7th/8th grade only).

No Squishies

On the subject of school supplies, many parents may want to include fidget support and tactile gadgets. Please note that any item that is "squishy" is not permitted to be used for these purposes as they lend themselves to tear open, tear apart, and create messes and other concerns. This includes both liquid filled and foam products. Thank you in advance for supporting this expectation.

Breakfast and Lunch Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast

Breakfast is served daily beginning at 6:45 AM. All students needing breakfast can go straight to the cafeteria line when they enter the building. All students will eat in the cafeteria in designated eating areas. Once 7th and 8th graders finish their breakfast, they head to the gym as noted above.

Lunch

We have 3 lunch periods at MJH. They last 30 minutes long and begin at 10:32 AM for 6th grade, and 11:03; 11:34 for mixed 7th and 8th grade. Parents are always welcome to join their child for lunch, but we will have a closed campus until August 24.

For more information on menus, pricing, Free and Reduced Lunch Applications, or MySchoolBucks, pleas visit our district Child Nutrition Link

For students not interested in purchasing lunch, grab that loaded lunch box that mom or dad packed before you walk out the door and enjoy that yummy home prepared meal.

No 3rd Party Deliveries

In order to promote a safe school environment, MJH does not accept deliveries from 3rd parties such as Door Dash and Uber Eats. Parents are welcome to drop off food and other items throughout the day.

Student IDs: Promoting School Safety Student IDs: Promoting School Safety

One of the most important research based factors that impacts school safety is wearing student, staff and visitor IDs. At MJH, we require all students to wear an ID on a lanyard, around their neck, visible between their collarbone and waist. Students who attempt to enter the building without an ID on will be asked to get theirs out and wear it. Those who forget them, or have lost them, will be issued a single day ID sticker for the cost of $1 that will be charged to their MySchoolBucks account. Students who acquire multiple single day ID stickers in a single grading quarter may receive disciplinary consequences and an Official ID replacement for a cost of $9. Lost IDs must be replaced immediately. Please help support your students meet this expectation through reminders, routines, and habits that promote wearing their ID.

What to Wear? What to Wear?

School clothing has always been important to students. (even in the 1980s: see opening). Styles have definitely changed over the year, but one thing has always been constant: The existence of a school dress code. At MJH, we make it simple. The attached graphic below shows what is expected in student attire. These standards apply to all clothing, including "ripped" jeans and off-the-shoulder tops. Pajamas, saggy pants and non-religious headwear is also not allowed. Options for students who do not meet these expectations include a school issued change of clothes, or a phone call to parents to bring the appropriate attire. Frequent violations will result in discipline consequences. We want our students to come to school comfortably, but it is important to follow this dress standard.
