The Strongsville Board of Education seeks applicants to fill the unexpired term of board member Ms. Megan Haffner, who resigned at last evening’s Board Meeting, effective immediately.

According to Ohio law, people serving on Ohio school boards must be 18 years old, district residents and registered voters. Interested applicants can download the application at https://tinyurl.com/SCSBOEApplication, visit the district website at www.scsmustangs.org (main page under ‘District News’) to access an online application, or pick up a paper version of the application in the lobby of the SCS Administrative Offices (18199 Cook Avenue). Applicants are required to include a cover letter of intent, a resume, and the completed application, which can either be submitted electronically to SCS Treasurer George Anagnostou (ganagnostou@scsmustangs.org) or dropped off in the mailbox outside of the SCS Administrative Offices. Electronic submissions must contain the signature of the applicant on the application.

The deadline for applications is Monday, May 18 at 4:00 p.m. Invitations will be extended to specific candidates on Tuesday, May 19, with interviews scheduled to take place during a special Board Meeting on Wednesday, May 20 at Strongsville High School (20025 Lunn Rd). The recommended candidate will be voted upon by the Board at their May 28 Board meeting.

The newly appointed Board member will serve until December 31, 2027. A special Board election must be held in November 2027 to fill the vacancy for the remaining two years of the original four-year term.

For the 6th year, our District has earned the prestigious "Auditor of State Award with Distinction" from Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber. This award recognizes our District's commitment to transparency, accountability, and strong financial management.

The Office of the Auditor of State conducts 4,200 audits annually of over 6,000 organizations state-wide. This award recognizes a select group of only about 4% earning this recognition of fiscal integrity.

Huge congratulations to our Treasurer George Anagnostou, his team, and our entire District for dedication to fiscal excellence and accountability.

Thank you to Tina Ludwig - Northeast Regional Liaison for Auditor Faber - for being at our Board Meeting last night and presenting this award to our District.

Mustang Spotlight - Mark Wyler, Monitor at SMS Mustang Spotlight - Mark Wyler, Monitor at SMS

Mr. Mark Wyler has worked in our District since 2019 and has been a resident of our community for 31 years. His three boys attended Strongsville City Schools and are all graduates of SHS. Mr. Wyler was nominated for this week’s spotlight for his work at SMS, where he has been a monitor since December of 2023. He also connects with our students as a Bus Driver in our Transportation Department. Mr. Wyler earned his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and his MBA from Baldwin Wallace University.

“For the past two years, I've been the "6th Grade Hallway Ambassador" for two hours each day during the 6th, 7th and 8th grade lunches. My main job is to check electronic hallpasses, but it is far more than that. The hallway is my classroom. As the year progresses, the students patiently help me learn their names. Whatever energy, politeness, fairness, kindness and respect I give the kids, I get it back. The students "check-in" with me. They say "Hello Mr. Wyler" or "Mr. Wyler, may I please..." They invite me to their concerts, musicals, and home athletic contests. They share accomplishments, adventures, joys, and even sorrows. I'm so incredibly proud of them all. In short, my time each day at SMS is the BEST TWO HOURS of my day!”

“I'm incredibly fortunate to work with so many kindred spirits at SMS who bring their very best and give their all each day to truly "be the difference" for our students. As I connect with more and more of the SMS staff, the collaboration has grown. Whether it be getting advice, understanding their expectations, being consistent in messaging, etc., I welcome their input. Any way I can help them, I want to.”

Thank you Mr. Wyler for all that you do to positively connect with our SMS students!

Lemonade Stand Generates Smiles at Muraski Elementary Lemonade Stand Generates Smiles at Muraski Elementary

Miss Smith & Miss Richards, M/I Intervention Specialists at Muraski, have worked with their students to create a “Muraski Mug” program for teachers and staff this school year. On Fridays, students have been learning and building skills, centered around a coffee cart at the school. This past week, they “expanded their operations” and created a lemonade stand, bringing some spring-like refreshments to Muraski!

SMS Students Provide “Spring Clean Up” for Strongsville Historical Society SMS Students Provide “Spring Clean Up” for Strongsville Historical Society

It was a Strongsville collaborative learning experience yesterday as Rotary, the Historical Society, community members, City workers, Schonhut Landscaping (owned by an SHS grad) and SMS parent chaperones joined to support students in our 8th grade Career Connections class. The students cleaned the grounds and spread over 15 yards of mulch to help beautify the Strongsville HIstorical Society. Students collaborated in teams, cooperated their efforts, problem solved, persevered to complete within a given time frame, worked with a sense of urgency, experienced landscaping hard skills, and best of all did it with smiles and laughter. The experience was also electronically documented with pictures, videos (drone footage) and interviews by the 7th grade SMS Communication and Broadcasting class who were also assisted by a community business owner in that field. Students in that class will review footage and put together an electronic summary of the day. Lunch was donated by Jersey Mike's, SMS parents, and the Historical Society. This annual event, once again, proved to be a valuable experience for all involved!

The turf at Pat Catan Stadium and at the field at SMS will be replaced this summer. Work will begin as soon as all events at Pat Catan Stadium have concluded. The crews will begin at SHS and then go to SMS. If you see construction work occurring, please stay out of those areas until they are officially reopened. Also, please know that once completed, the SMS field will no longer be open for continuous use. Over the last 11 years, we have had continuous damage to the field and therefore we need to better protect it. A larger fence will be installed with a timed gate entry system. People may still use the field by following our facilities rental procedures.
