Dear Hazeldale Parents and Guardians!

Last week, Team H.O.P.E. hosted a amazing Fall Festival! It was so good to see many of our families coming together to enjoy an evening of dancing, eating and playing games! We appreciate all the volunteers and Team H.O.P.E. who did a wonderful job organizing the event!

If your family has been impacted by the lack or reduced SNAP benefits, please, reach out to us as we might be able to help. So far these past few days, we have distributed 20 food boxes for families in need.

If your family would like to support others in need in our community, please reach out to us at carolina_cavedon@beaverton.k12.or.us so we can share with you the initiatives we have currently going on.

Picture retake day is on Wednesday, November 12th!

Our the next bilingual coffee with the principal, will be on Wednesday, November 19th, from 7:45-8:45am. We hope you can join us!

Please, make sure you take a look at the resource the Hazeldale Attendance Team has created for you to support in knowing when there is or not school. Hopefully that is helpful so we can ensure our students are at Hazeldale everyday learning! Hazeldale HERO- Here Everyday Ready to Learn On Time

Don't forget that we have Fall Break from November 24th to the 28th and there will be no school!

As always, reach out to the office if you would like to schedule a meeting with us or write us an email at carolina_cavedon@beaverton.k12.or.us.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE: HEAD LICE INFORMATION FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE: HEAD LICE INFORMATION

Per the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), head lice infestations are most common among preschool and elementary school-age children and their household members regardless of socioeconomic status and hygienic living conditions.

Head lice are tiny insects about the size of a sesame seed. Lice do not jump or fly; they do not have wings. They live close to the human scalp. An itchy head is a common symptom of lice. While lice are a nuisance, they are not dangerous nor do they spread disease.

What to look for:

  • Itching/scratching of head, especially at the back of the head and neck.
  • Nits on the hair, close to the scalp. These are usually pearly-grey or brown in color and are tightly attached to the hair shaft.
  • Dandruff is easily removed, whereas nits cannot be brushed or swept away.

Ways to help prevent the spread of lice:
  • Check your student’s head regularly for head lice to catch it early.
  • Avoid head-to-head contact when playing at school and at home.
  • Teach your child the importance of not sharing things that touch the head such as brushes, hair accessories, hats, helmets, and ear buds.
  • Understand the life cycle of lice.

What to do if Lice are found:

  • Treat your child with lice treatment recommended by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Follow the instructions carefully.
  • Hatched nits/lice cannot survive more than 2 days without a human host.
  • Spending excessive time and money on house cleaning activities is not necessary to avoid re-infestation by lice or nits. Do not use fumigant sprays; they can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

Contact your school nurse at (Laura_VanDyke@beaverton.k12.or.us) and/or access any of the resources for more information:

AVAILABLE FOOD RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES AVAILABLE FOOD RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES

With the ongoing government shutdown, there’s uncertainty about how programs that support families, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other food assistance, may be affected. We understand this may cause concern for some families in our community.

As a reminder, every student has access to a free, nutritious breakfast and lunch each school day. We also want to share additional community resources that may help:

School-Based Food Pantries
The Oregon Food Bank (OFB) and Urban Gleaners (UG) operate several weekly or bi-weekly food pantries at our school sites. These pantries are open to everyone; families don’t need to attend that particular school to receive assistance. Pantries are located outside the schools on designated days. In addition, Aloha High School and Community School at Merlo Station Campus have pantries inside the schools, available to students only.

For a list of our school-based pantries, see the calendar attached to this ParentSquare message or visit our district website. For food pantries outside our schools, check OFB’s Food Finder.

Beaverton Resource Center
The Beaverton Resource Center (BRC) supports eight church-based pantries in Beaverton through the Care to Share Food Pantry Network. Phone: 503-591-9025

Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has opened its new Washington County HOPE Center, featuring a food pantry designed to serve up to 1,200 families per month. Address: 1440 SE 21st Ave, Hillsboro; phone: 503-640-4311

Feed My Body, Feed My Brain
The Beaverton Education Foundation is once again partnering with the district to fundraise for the Feed My Body, Feed My Brain campaign. Grocery gift cards will be distributed to families in need prior to winter break — the number of cards depends on the amount of money raised. If you’re able, please consider donating online to the campaign.

Thank you for helping to ensure that every child is fed and ready to learn.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

GEAR UP FOR FALL

It's time to gear up for Fall! As our days turn a bit darker and much wetter, with the right gear, you can keep walking and rolling all month long. Use these tips to make it easier to get out the door with the things you need to keep your children warm and comfortable for their trip to school.

  • Wear bright reflective clothing when walking or rolling.
  • Don’t assume people driving will see you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
  • Be alert! Keep eyes and ears open, especially while crossing the street.
  • Cyclists should make sure to have lights and wear helmets – it is the law.
  • Driving or biking? Use extra caution and slow down in the dark and rain. And remember, do not text and drive!

RUBY BRIDGES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is coming soon on Thursday, 11/14. Join students from around the country in a walk for justice and take steps to build a better future where racism, and all forms of bullying, have no place. Ruby Bridges made history at 6 years old when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans and became a national icon for the civil rights movement in 1960. Ask your school how they are participating, walk to school on 11/14, and learn more about Ruby Bridges by walking to your nearest Beaverton City Library branch. Use your student library card to check out books about Ruby Bridges. New students to BSD this year will receive their student library card by mail before winter break. REPEAT REPEAT

TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL

It's normal for children to get sick from time to time. But when should a parent keep a child home?

Below are some guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school. The recommendations are based on the guidelines provided by the Communicable Disease Program of the Washington County Department of Health and Human Services. They were developed to help prevent the spread of potentially contagious disease.

Home is the best place for a child who is ill. If your child is sick with a diagnosed communicable disease, please notify the school as soon as possible. This notification will greatly assist others who, due to medical reasons and/or treatments, have weakened immune systems and may require immediate and specialized care.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH BREAKFAST & LUNCH

The building is open to all students at 7:30am, including students who will be having breakfast at school. If a student arrives late and needs breakfast, they will be able to get it from the cafeteria and eat it in their classroom.

Both breakfast and lunch are provided free for each student each day. Families do not need to complete the benefit application.

The Beaverton School District Menu for Elementary Schools can be found here.

RESOURCES RESOURCES

Birthday Invitations Information

Parents/Guardians should NOT bring treats, balloons, etc. to the classroom for a “birthday party.”

In addition:

1. Birthdays may be celebrated in the classroom through the reading of a child's favorite book or by creating cards, for example. This approach will allow for each student’s birthday to be recognized, maximizing instructional time, as well as limiting the sugary foods that are consumed when regularly celebrating birthdays in the classroom, avoiding allergic reactions and honoring the diversity among our students and families.

2. If your child wants to invite children from the class to a birthday party outside of school, the invitations should not be delivered to children at school unless the whole class is being invited. Please note that student phone and addresses are confidential and therefore cannot be provided by the teacher.

3. A great way to celebrate your child's special day is to send to school their favorite picture book to be shared aloud with the whole class. Make sure you let your student's teacher know about it.

Student Personal Belongings

Please, remember to label all your student's personal belongings as well as to send extra clothes in the backpack. Accidents can happen and the school doesn't have extra clothes to provide to all students. Thanks for understanding!

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

If your student will need medications at school, prescription or over-the-counter, parents need to bring those to school and fill out a Medication Authorization Form. You can stop by our school office during Meet Your Teacher night with your medication and fill out the form. You can find more information on medication requirements on our district website:
