DKHS WEEKLYNEWSLETTER"DO A JOB"

NOVEMBER 15, 2024 NOVEMBER 15, 2024

So many highlights this week as our kids are showing a wide range of skills and sharing their talents as we strive for success in many areas. Students representing us at the SAC League level, as well as the MHSAA in sports and leadership, and the State FFA competition level to name a few. Today's post has some important reminders, highlights from events, and some recognition for kids we have that are making a difference. You will also see some classroom notes from a few teachers who have shared what is happening in their classrooms.

Look for pictures throughout this bulletin to see some of our kids who are Doing A Job!!!!

  • We hosted our annual Veterans Assembly and honored a full house of vets and their families. Our kids from all 3 levels always make me proud as they are polite, respectful, and welcoming to our honored guests. The band, and vocal soloists Aaliyah Culver, Maci Osborne, Maggie Martin, and Eric Belka along with the Elementary choir crushed it!! Shout Out to Mrs. Knight and Ms. Martin who do a great job of organizing and putting on this event.

  • The theatre production of Aladdin was outstanding. I was so impressed with the quality of costumes, backdrops, and student performances. Thanks to Mrs. Guthrie for stepping in earlier in the fall to supervise this and kudos to the kids for their teamwork and efforts in putting on such a good show.

  • The High School Mental Health Ambassadors have been active in preparing the new Student Wellness Room. Painting is almost done, with some throw rugs, furniture, and resources ready to be placed in the room. This space will be used in a variety of ways to support students and their mental health needs. Our SEB lessons along with Community Circles are helping build relationships and give kids some tools to manage their emotions and support others. We are seeing many examples of kids living out these lessons.

  • Congratulations to Evelynn Courneya for her outstanding performance at the Regional Farm Bureau Discussion Meet this week. Competing against 19 other top FFA students, Evelynn showcased her knowledge and skills, earning an impressive 4th-place finish. Her achievement has secured her position as the region's alternate to the state competition! Well done, Evelynn—your hard work and dedication have truly paid off!

  • We wrapped up fall athletics and kicked off winter sports tryouts.

  • Aubrey Yarger took first in diving at the Regional Championship Meet at Otsego and now heads to the State Finals at Oakland University. Many others had Personal Records at that meet including Maggie Martin and Alysin Coleman.

  • Landon Madden had the best DK-Cross Country finish EVER at the State Finals at MIS Speedway.

  • The first-ever girls' wrestling team will be competing this winter. We have had female wrestlers before but this year they have their own schedule of events.

  • The winter version of the Community Pep Rally is on Nov 21 at 6 PM in the HS gym. Come out and meet our winter coaches and athletes and help us build on the positive community we have here at DKS!!!

  • From Mr. Cannell: In Senior English, the students are nearing the end of a unit focused on writing.

We started the year with a pretest where they shared their school experience

in an essay. Then, they took a look at Common App and chose one of the questions from the essay part of the application to write about. Finally, this week they are putting together a research paper. We went into Xello and did some reflection on some of the lessons, made business cards, and conducted some extra research about a few career options. I'm excited to see what they produce.

  • From Ms. Hebenstreit: Some Ag Science kids took 5 of our chickens to an FFA contest at the slaughterhouse in Fowlerville to see that part of the process. The rest of the chickens have been delivered for processing also.

  • We have started conversations with staff to see how we could get creative with our AEP time to help improve scores, close some gaps, and set our kids up for even greater success on SAT and other assessments.

  • We will be having an assembly presentation from The Michigan Cyber Security Initiative on December 2. This is connected to the OKAY 2 SAY organization and challenges kids to take a stand for student safety around all the issues connected to technology and student mental health.

This week’s Hogie’s Heroes are Jordan Glasgow, who went above and beyond to show some compassion and concern for a friend and made a difference, and the student-athletes who represented Delton at the MHSAA Leadership Summit in Lansing. Those leaders are Brynlee Babbitt-Smith, Jillian Brandli, Madison Muskovin, Sophie Ferris, Lindie Wiessner, Keegan Hill, Mason Ferris, and Easton Reynolds.

Thank you! Thank you!

What a magical show!

DK Theater Arts Company put on a fun performance of Aladdin last weekend! The community appreciated the show, and the kids enjoyed bringing the magic to life.
