VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI
WEEK 6, TERM 3, 2025.
FROM RYVES...
Acknowledging our staff following ERO
A huge thank you to all of our staff for their efforts during the recent ERO visit. Teachers opened their classrooms for observations, giving our visitors a real sense of our learning culture. Our administration team were instrumental in the preparation leading up to the visit, ensuring we had the necessary documentation. Those with leadership responsibilities shared a deep knowledge of our school, providing insight into our practices, and our vision for the future. The combined efforts of everyone involved highlighted the strengths of our school and our commitment to improving.
The reviewers appreciated the openness of the conversations and discussions that drove the evaluation. The process is designed to be collaborative, allowing school leaders to contribute to the synthesis and formation of next steps. Yes, the conversations were at times challenging, but this is done to ensure robust scrutiny of school performance through the lens of outcomes for learners.
Some informal, positive feedback included:
- School culture and belonging: Our school culture and strong sense of connectedness were clear. The impact of our school values was evident in the way children manage themselves within our school. On more than one occasion, we heard how ‘delightful our children were!’
- Learning environments: Children are on task, and a high-trust relationship exists between students and teachers. A wide range of opportunities is available for our tamariki beyond the academic programme.
- Leadership focused on learning: Our leadership team is committed to using evidence-based approaches to shape our vision for learning and drive improvement.
A personal message I took from the review was to drive development from within, capitalise on the school’s identity, and lead change through continuing to strengthen classroom teaching practices.
We are very fortunate to have such a capable group of teachers at Vogeltown School, and I look forward to seeing the positive changes that will come as a result of ERO’s time with us.
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY-A HUGE SUCCESS!
A big thank you to everyone who made our school cross country such a fantastic event!
Our teachers put in a huge amount of preparation and provided excellent supervision on the day to make sure everything ran smoothly. A special mention to Lee, Laura and Rachel for their early morning set up of the course.
We are also very grateful to our parents and whānau who volunteered their time to help with marshalling. This meant our teaching team could stay with their classes to provide support and supervision. We really appreciate your help - it made a big difference in allowing the day to run so smoothly. Thanks also to those who came along to cheer on our tamariki - it added real atmosphere to the day.
Our children did us proud, giving their very best and showing real jungle tiger attitudes throughout the event. Congratulations to the children who have made it through to the interschool cross country event. We look forward to seeing you represent Vogeltown School with the same determination and spirit!
It was our first time using this new venue, and everything worked so well - we couldn’t have asked for a better day.
ZOO TIGER VS JUNGLE TIGER
Being a jungle tiger is a way for our teachers to talk about what it means to be a good learner.
A jungle tiger lives in the wild, where things are unpredictable. To survive, it must be able to face challenges and in doing so, be adaptable, resilient, and willing to learn through trial and error. In the classroom, a jungle tiger mindset means taking risks, thinking critically, and learning from mistakes so students can thrive when faced with challenges or uncertainty.
In contrast, a zoo tiger lives in a safe, controlled environment with few real challenges and dependent on help to navigate it’s world. This can make it harder to cope when things get tough or when independent thinking is needed.

PAID UNION MEETINGS
On Tuesday 26th August at 1:30pm, a number of our staff will be attending a paid union meeting, facilitated by NZEI Te Riu Roa.
These meetings are an entitlement for all union members and can take place up to twice a year. Staff will be meeting to discuss and vote on next steps in public service pay negotiations, collective agreement matters, and the campaign to increase school staffing.
What does this mean for our school?
The school will remain open, however our teaching programmes and classroom arrangements will be adjusted to manage with fewer staff onsite.
We appreciate your support and understanding.
TEACHER ONLY DAY
We will be holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 29 August. On this day, school will be closed for instruction.
The focus of this day is for our teaching team to continue deepening their understanding of the new national curriculum refresh, including how it will shape teaching and learning within our school. This learning is important to ensure we are well prepared to deliver a curriculum that meets the needs of our learners.
We appreciate your support in making this time available for staff.
