Message from Principal David Ewers Message from Principal David Ewers

North Community,

March is here and we are gearing up for a great finish to the third quarter! It was so nice having the students in the building for a full week! This week we will have another traditional schedule, with a 7-hour day on Monday, and block days on Tuesday-Friday.

We had a great week last week! We had several wrestlers compete at state, several students representing our school at State Music, and NJROTC dominated a thirteen-team event in Wichita! Additionally, boys’ and girls’ basketball had great weeks, and we qualified two bowlers for the state tournament.

It’s another full week at SMN. Spring sports start today, and boys’ and girls’ basketball are competing in the post-season on Tuesday and Wednesday. We also have band, choir, and theater performances throughout the week. Please get out and support our students!

Please let us know if you have any questions about the upcoming week. Let’s have a great one and Go Bison!

Be a yearbook angel and help donate a yearbook for a student in need. This year the yearbook company has a "donate" button -- so you don't have to donate a full book price ($50) but could donate another amount. Last year we had enough donations to help 25 students get a yearbook. If you would like to donate, head to [www.yearbookforever.com]www.yearbookforever.com and go to Shawnee Mission North. Click on donate – if you’re donating a yearbook, use the coupon code angel. Thanks to all who have done this in the past and to those who choose to donate this year.

Attendance Reminder
“As a reminder: Please remember to contact the attendance hotline, (913) 993-6945, whenever your student is absent. Without a call, absences will be marked as unexcused, and multiple unexcused absences may lead to additional steps being taken to support your student’s attendance.

Additionally, after 10 absences, any further absences will need to be accompanied by documentation that aligns with the following reasons:

  • Personal illness. (Doctor/Dental/Medical appointments) The school may, with notice to the parent, require verification from a physician of absences due to reasons of health.
  • Serious illness or death of a member of the family.
  • Obligatory religious observances of the student’s own faith.
  • Emergency situation requiring immediate action.
  • Participation in a Kansas State High School Activities Association activity, a district-approved function, or a school-sponsored activity.

If documentation is not provided, the absence will be considered unexcused.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation!”

Bison Athletics and Activities Bison Athletics and Activities

The Kansas City Star’s annual High School Scholar-Athlete awards program, in partnership with the KC Royals, recognizes the achievements of outstanding young people across the metro. SM North students representatives are Jack Eaton, Jonathan Guild, and Jack McCarthy. Congratulations on your nomination.

SM North Student-Athlete Leadership Team and SM North Varsity Coaching staff have initiated the Bison Male and Female Athlete of the Month for the 2024-2025 school year.

The Student/Athlete of the Month Award encompasses many aspects of an individual’s character. This award is not intended to be a trivial recognition of who is the “best athlete.” After all, the “best athlete” isn’t necessarily the best teammate, hardest worker, etc. This award represents the student athlete who represents him/herself academically, behaviorally, and as a member of a team. It could be a player that goes out of their way to help their teammates improve, maintains their composure when things aren’t going their way, stays positive in the face of adversity, and continues to encourage others regardless of the obstacles. Maybe it is a player that has shown the most growth and improvement through determination, commitment, and being coachable. The point is, we have some amazing student-athletes that value and emulate the “right way” to do things during and after school. The recipients for the month of January are Josephine Rathsam and Jonathan Guild. Congratulations!

National Letter of Intent (NLI) now known as Athletic Aid agreements. We will host a spring NLI signing for ALL our student-athletes on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 in the FH. However, if a family wants to celebrate their student-athlete individually that is an option. In either situation families are responsible for hosting this event but we will help with set-up, student announcements, etc. It is imperative families provide the school at least two weeks advance notice if you host an individual signing.

We will provide the student-athlete with a placard with their picture and attending college. Families and student-athletes will provide decorations and any desserts or treats for friends and families.

Coaches have been provided questionnaires so we can communicate directly with our student-athletes who are signing a NLI | Athletic Aid agreement. If you have questions please feel free to call me at 993-6921.
