Our Shared Obligation to Our Learning Community Our Shared Obligation to Our Learning Community

As we reflect on this election season and the opportunities it brings for civic engagement and learning, our obligation as educators is twofold: to provide a high-quality education for every student and staff member, and to ensure that our schools remain safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for all.

Elections can bring a mix of emotions and discussions into our homes and classrooms. While these conversations can be valuable opportunities for learning, they can also be challenging, especially for students and staff members from communities that include immigrants, English Learners, and LGBTQ+ youth. As partners in your child’s education, we ask for your support in addressing these challenges together. Please know that we are not alone in this endeavor, Governor Gavin Newsom, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, and the County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gloria Ciriza have all pledged their commitment to protecting schools from hate speech and extremism.

Here are some ways we can work collaboratively to support our students during this time:

  1. Promote Respect and Kindness: Respect and kindness are core values in our school district. Encourage your child to celebrate the diversity of their peers and to approach differences of opinion with understanding. Modeling respectful communication at home reinforces the importance of building a community rooted in care and empathy.

  2. Recognize and Validate Emotions: Students may feel a variety of emotions in response to the election and related discussions, particularly if they belong to communities directly impacted by the results or rhetoric. Listen to their concerns, validate their feelings, and remind them that our schools are places where everyone is valued and respected.

  3. Support for Immigrants, English Learners and LGBTQ+ Students: We recognize that our English Learner and LGBTQ+ communities may face unique challenges during this time. Please know that we are committed to providing resources, support, and a safe environment for all students. If your child expresses concerns, connect with their teacher, counselor, or our support staff to explore available resources.

  4. Address Messages of Hatred or Intolerance: Any language or actions rooted in hate or discrimination have no place in our schools. Encourage your child to report concerns to a trusted adult, and rest assured that we will address such incidents promptly. We are unwavering in our commitment to equity and inclusion.

  5. Foster Positive Engagement: Help your child find ways to channel their feelings into positive action. Acts of kindness, participation in community service, and learning about civic engagement can empower students to make a difference.

  6. Additional Resources for Families: Click HERE to access additional resources offered to families in California.

Our dual obligation to educate students and ensure their safety is at the heart of everything we do. Together, we can create a learning environment that supports every student and staff member, no matter their background or identity. By encouraging our students and staff members to live by the Golden Rule—treating others as they would like to be treated—we can foster a culture of respect, kindness, and understanding that strengthens our entire school community.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students and staff by upholding the values of our district.
