August 2022

Dear Warrior Families -

When we flip the calendar to August, the excitement for the start of the 2022-23 school year becomes very real. Many of our activities and athletics kick off their official practice schedule. Staff begin returning to the building to set up classrooms and participate in professional development. As you begin to think about the start of the school year, please consider encouraging your student to get involved in at least one activity or club while at Washington High. We know that students who feel connected to school have an overall better, more positive high school experience. There are many clubs and activities to choose from here at WHS. Students will receive information on activities and club meetings through the daily student announcements. Additionally, there is a listing of existing clubs and advisors in the student handbook that all students and parents will receive the first week of school (look for the link in the September newsletter!) Please talk with your student about how he/she plans to be involved and connected.

There are many important events that happen in August to help students prepare for a successful school year. You should have received the Back to School Mailer by the end of July. It came both by physical mail through the US Postal Service and is linked electronically in this newsletter. If you did not receive this mailer, please contact the school at (605) 367-7970 so we can verify your contact information.

Some of our major events this month we want to highlight are as follows:

  • Warrior Day: Warrior Day will be on Thursday, August 11th. This is the day students come to WHS to get their picture taken, pick up their class schedule, purchase a parking permit, etc. Details for Warrior Day are included in this newsletter - so please keep reading! Warrior Day is also the official welcome day for the Warrior Class of 2026. Our freshman academy team has put together a great day of activities to make our newest Warriors feel comfortable as they start their high school journey.

  • PST Night: Parent Student Teacher Night will be on Thursday, August 18th. This is a chance for students and parents/guardians to come in and meet the teachers for the fall semester. Details about times for PST are included in the newsletter.

  • First Day of School: Our first day of school is Thursday, August 25th. Our days start at 8:15 a.m. each day, and our school day will end at 3:10 p.m.

We are very excited for students to return to school soon! If you have any questions as we enter into the start of the school year, please do not hesitate to reach out to us here at school. Go, Warriors!!

Sincerely,

WHS Administrative Team

Kari Papke, Preston Kooima, Heidi Jorgenson, Nate Malchow

Annual Update

It is time! Parents and guardians of students currently enrolled in the Sioux Falls School District who will be with us in the fall should complete the Annual Student Information Update (Online Registration) for each of their children. This is done through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal: https://parentview.sf.k12.sd.us/campus/portal/siouxfalls.jsp . After logging into the Parent Portal, select the option 'More' from the left menu and a link for Annual Information Update will display.

This must be done through parent/guardian accounts only. Household information for ALL students must be updated prior to Washington High School Warrior Day, August 11, 2022. Only Household A (address that your students’ enrollment is based off) parents/guardians will be able to complete the annual update through the Parent Portal. If Household B has changes to their contact information, the SFSD will be sending out a paper copy in early August for parents/guardians to complete and return to Washington High School.

Any student entering 7th through 12th Grade in the Fall of 2022 and planning to participate in the middle school or high school athletics/fine arts program during the 2022-2023 academic year, the Annual Information Update will need to be completed PRIOR to any participation in activities, which includes, but is not limited to, the first practice, workout (summer included) or tryout of an activity in which the student is participating.

If you do not have access to a computer, one is available Monday through Thursday, 7:15 am – 4:45 pm through July 28th and then Monday through Friday, 7:30 - 4:00 pm starting on August 1st at Washington High school in the Counseling office.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call WHS at 367-7970. Thank you.

Did Your Address Change? Have You Notified Us?

If you have changed your physical address over the summer, please drop off proof of residency in the office. Documents that are acceptable for address verification within the last 60 days are: lease agreement, mortgage documents, utility bill, property tax payment/receipt, homeowner’s insurance policy, or state/government agency mail (no Post Office issued documents).
