Some thoughts for the starting school year
April 2025
The Value of the Month is Resilience
“Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.”
― Gever Tulley
Jessop Priorities
- To ensure our children are happy and we explain things well
- To ensure no child leaves our school unable to read
- To ensure children learn a broad vocabulary to access the world around them
- To enhance the educational experiences of diagnosed and undiagnosed children with SEND
A Message from Mr Baffoe
This half term has been incredibly busy, filled with exciting events and wonderful opportunities for our children and community. A huge thank you to Music Masters for organising the fantastic Music Fest, which was brilliantly attended and showcased the incredible talent of our pupils – we are also very grateful to all the parents who supported the event and the children who took part. It was lovely to see so many of you at Parent Consultations – if you haven’t yet had a chance to meet with your child’s class teacher, there’s still time to book an appointment. Our termly exhibition of work was a real celebration of the children’s creativity and engagement, and the topic day dress-up brought their learning to life – thank you again for helping make this so special. Our Ladies Appreciation event was extremely well attended and a great success – many thanks to all who came and to the staff who helped organise it. Lion Class wowed us with their brilliant class assembly, full of musicality, humour, and thoughtful insights into Paddington and the history of London and its tube stations, beautifully reflecting our value of the month: caring. Among the many trips this term, some children were lucky enough to visit the Houses of Parliament, which was a fantastic opportunity. Thank you to everyone who donated Easter eggs for children in hospital – your kindness is much appreciated. Our Dads Club wrapped up the month with a fantastic Saturday gathering, where we were also joined by the BBC, who recorded an interview with myself and some of our brilliant dads – thank you to all those who came along or helped out. We’re already looking forward to an equally exciting term ahead!

Jessop's Dads and Male Carers Club Nominated for Prestigious Award!...
.....and captures the eye of the BBC!
We are incredibly proud to share that our very own Dads and Male Carers Club has been nominated for the prestigious Lambeth Civic Award under the Thriving Communities category! Founded by one of our dedicated dads, Scott Leonard, alongside our Head of School Mr Baffoe, the club has grown into a powerful force for positive male engagement within our school community. Find out the results by clicking this link https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/lambeth-civic-awards-2025
This inspiring work has also caught the attention of the BBC, who visited Jessop to see the club in action. They interviewed Parents, Carers, and Mr Baffoe, and were hugely impressed by the strong sense of community and the uplifting message the club promotes—providing positive male role models in a world where negative portrayals of masculinity are all too common.
We’re eagerly awaiting the award results—click the link below to find out more and read the full article! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0jgjx8zw1xo
Class Assembly
Lion Class Assembly – A Journey with Paddington Bear
Lion Class took us on a brilliant adventure during their assembly, inspired by their topic on Paddington Bear. The children explored the fascinating history of the London Underground, linking it cleverly to Paddington’s travels. With hilarious acting and lively singing, their performance had everyone smiling from ear to ear. The musicality of the violins and drums truly set the stage alight, adding energy and flair to an already entertaining show. We are so proud of every child for their confidence and creativity. A huge thank you to all the parents who came along to support—it meant so much to the children.
Opening up a world of Possibilities
Exploring the World of Possibilities – A Visit to the Houses of Parliament
At Jessop Primary, The World of Possibilities is one of our key drivers, helping children explore exciting future career paths. This term, our Lower KS2 Jessop Journalists and School Councilors had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament. They toured both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, learning how laws are made in the UK and discovering what it’s like to be a politician or journalist. The children had a brilliant time—and here’s a fun fact they learned: Big Ben is not actually the name of the clock or the tower, but the nickname of the Great Bell inside the clock tower, which is officially called the Elizabeth Tower!
Music Masters’ annual Music Fest was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible musical talent of our children in a vibrant, fun-filled event. From the inspiring ‘Musician Teacher Takeover’ to heartwarming performances by family musicians and the ever-popular open mic session, every act was a joy to watch. The atmosphere was electric, with plenty of food, drinks, and activities for everyone to enjoy. The support from families and the wider community was phenomenal, making it a truly special occasion. A huge thank you to Music Masters for organising such a fantastic festival, and a fond farewell to Polly, who has been an integral part of the team for many years. She has secured an exciting new role, and we wish her every success in her future career.
A Special Visit from Violinist Njioma Grevious
We were delighted to welcome the incredibly talented violinist Njioma Grevious to our school this term. She performed beautifully during assembly, captivating the children with her skill and passion for music. The children were fascinated and had the chance to ask Njioma questions about her career, learning all about her journey as a professional musician. It was an inspiring experience that truly brought music to life and showed the children what’s possible with dedication and creativity.
Our thanks also goes to Music Masters who had organised this amazing opportunity for our children.
A Colourful Celebration on Dress-Up Day!
Our recent Dress-Up Day was a fantastic event, filled with creativity and excitement from start to finish. Children from Nursery to Year 6 proudly dressed up to celebrate the occasion, sharing stories about their characters and taking part in a joyful outdoor assembly. It was wonderful to see the smiles and imagination on display! A big thank you to all our parents and carers for your support in helping make the day so special.
Ladies Appreciation Afternoon
A Celebration of the Wonderful Women in Our Community
A huge thank you to all the mums, aunts, grandmothers, big sisters, friends, and carers who joined us for our Female Appreciation Afternoon. It truly was a fantastic, fun-filled event! The hall was buzzing with creativity and laughter as the ladies and children enjoyed a range of craft activities, shared delicious snacks, and took time to chat and connect with each other and the wider school community. The warm and joyful atmosphere reached a high point as children danced with their special guests—ending with a spontaneous conga line that had everyone smiling! It was wonderful to see so many of you amazing women there. We can’t wait to welcome you back for the next one!

Curriculum Spotlight
This Month we Shine a Light on Homework
Please help support your child with their spellings by looking at the spelling rules, sounds and patterns in each word. Practising spellings daily (or as much as possible) will help your children to learn and remember each word.
In KS1, children will need to choose five spelling words to put into sentences.
In KS2, children will need to write a sentence for each word, using neat, joined handwriting.
This will give the children the opportunity to understand the meaning of each word, put the word into context and allow them to practise their handwriting.
The children will complete a Spelling and Times Table test during the week

Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential, is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9.01am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.

Raising a Concern
It is important to us that any concerns or questions you may have are dealt with as efficiently as possible. The structure we have in place is designed to do just that.
The structure
1) Your first port of call is -Your child’s class teacher
(email via the admin team to request a meeting)
2) You may contact the leader of your child’s phase
This includes issues regarding communication and organisation
(email via the admin team to request a meeting)
Should you be dissatisfied with the handling or outcome…
3) You may raise your concerns with Mr Baffoe
(email via the admin team to request a meeting outlining the nature for the purpose of the meeting)
Leaders are required to share items (as appropriate) with Mr Baffoe on a weekly basis, even if the matter is being handled by them.
We request that you do not field your concerns to FoJ but instead work directly with the school staff as outlined above.
