Hello Sheiko Families,
As we head into December, let’s finish strong together! One of the best ways to support your child’s learning is by building strong daily habits—reading for 20–30 minutes each night and practicing math facts for just five minutes a day. These small routines make a big difference, especially as we prepare for the NWEA assessments when we return from break.
Arriving on time is another powerful way to set students up for success. Our doors open at 7:55 a.m., and students must be in their seats and ready to learn by 8:20. To make this fun, we’re continuing with our monthly Tardy Contest! The top classes with the fewest tardies will earn a special reward with me—this month it’s hot chocolate and extra recess! We will find out who the winner is after the holiday break.
There are so many amazing learning opportunities happening right now: our high school HOSA students are competing this Saturday, our own Sheiko Academic Games Team is representing us in Detroit, and of course, Winterfest is tonight at 6 p.m. right here at Sheiko! I encourage you to attend as many events as you can. They’re great opportunities not only to learn but also to get to know your child’s friends and their families.
Our “Big Announcement” this week is all about… math facts! Regular practice builds confidence and fluency. Some great ways to practice include IXL, Xtra Math, flashcards, car-ride math games, skip-counting challenges, or even quick questions during everyday routines. When I was in elementary school, my mom used to quiz me while braiding my hair—she asked me 5 + 4 so many times that I still remember it like it was yesterday!
