Last week was so much fun and it continued on as we celebrated College GO! Week! Check out what has happened this past week, what is coming up in the future, and helpful websites for our parents so they stay in the know!
College GO! Week At The School City of Hobart
College GO! Week is a great week for many reasons! Our older students can apply to several colleges for FREE, our middle school students continue to grow and learn about Hobart University and how they can earn college credits, and our younger students are introduced to many different careers and learn how Hobart University can benefit them in the future! Let's face it, we live in an era where certifications, courses, training, or degrees are required. We can assist our Brickies who want to pursue trades, attend college, join the military, and so much more.
As many know, the School City of Hobart's Hobart University was chosen to be a mentor site for other schools who are starting or growing their own college credit courses. This is incredible and shows the success that our Brickies are having as well. Since starting Hobart University in 2018 our students have saved over $4.5 million in college tuition and several have even graduated with an Associates degree!
It's no surprise that we enjoy College GO! Week as do our students! Together as a school district we celebrated each day with a different theme and our Brickies did not disappoint! Our 4th grade students took a tour at the high school where they went to different early college classes and learned from the students themselves! Then our 5th grade students all attended a zoom session with Dr. Buffington where they learned how Hobart University can help them get the best start to whatever career choice they choose! Whether college, trade, or military - having college credits and certifications when you graduate will definitely give them an advantage when they enter the workforce!
To finish off the week, every student and staff member received a new Hobart University shirt that they can wear proudly. We are proud of our students and staff for all of their hard work and successes over the past 4 years with HU and we look forward to watching everyone continue to grow.

Our Business Professionals of America students shined!
Earlier this week our Business Professionals of America students attended the NWI Forum 'Ignite the Region' luncheon. 'Ignite the Region' presents new framework for building economic growth and prosperity in the region. Our Brickies had the opportunity to learn from many professionals and speak with Governor Holcomb! Check out the video below were you will see our senior student, Lily Cavasos, asking Governor Holcomb a question - as he answered her question he then proceeds to give recognition to sophomore student Felix Lopez. The students were overjoyed with the opportunity to attend a luncheon with Governor Holcomb and Congressman Mrvan. There were over 400 people in attendance which included a long list of elected politicians and business professionals representing Northwest Indiana. Most importantly students learned more about NWI and the Ready grant of $50 million+, which will continue to rebuild the Region. Great opportunity for our Brickies!
Career Day At The Early Learning Center!
There are no words to express the happiness that comes from these little Brickies! No matter what, they always have best attitudes, best questions, and best answers! If everyone could take a day and spend it with these 5 and 6 year old's it will definitely be brightened - and remind you of the youthfulness that is in all of us.
These excited little Brickies had a great experience learning about several different careers: from limo drivers, pet grooming, and heavy maintenance repairs to farmers, electricians, and construction! The students, as always, had a great time and we hope they talk to their parents all about it! How many kids get their picture taken from the sky!? (Thanks NIPSCO!)
Ask your little Brickie about their experience and let them know that Hobart University will have their back no matter what route they choose. We offer college credits, certifications, opportunities that will give your student a head start in any career path they choose - trades, colleges, military - we are here to help!

Alexis - NEW Associate Attorney In Indianapolis!
Alexis Jenkins graduated from Hobart High School in 2014 where she was a part of Wolffgang, theatre, Youth in Government, varsity soccer, and the Hall of Scholars! Following her love for the arts and performance, she studied theatre, film, and communications at Indiana University Bloomington, graduating in December 2017. After gaining some work experience at a local media company in Valparaiso and as a legal assistant in South Bend, Alexis realized she wanted to have a career that would allow her to help others, be challenged regularly, and afford her greater independence. She found herself back at IU Bloomington, only this time as a law student at Maurer School of Law.
Alexis became heavily involved in the Public Interest Law Foundation (an organization dedicated to raising funds for students taking on unpaid public interest law internships), the IU Center for Constitutional Democracy (a group providing constitutional design research, education, and advice to global changemakers), and as an intern at the Office of Assistant Chief Counsel for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. She is now graduated and recently passed the Indiana Bar Exam!!!
Alexis is excited to be sworn in as an attorney this fall, after which she will continue her legal career as an Associate Attorney at Riley Bennett Egloff LLP, a civil litigation firm in Indianapolis.
Learn About Remind
The School City of Hobart uses Remind to communicate with families via text messages and/or phone calls.
What are some ways that we use Remind?
- District News- Weekly newsletter, emergency closings, and other important information
- Class Reminders from Teachers - Events, tests, homework, due dates
- Announcements and Celebrations
- One-on-One Help
If you have not been receiving our messages and would like to, please reach out to your student's teacher for their Remind class code, which you will then text to 81010. For example, if you wanted to join a class with the class code @math, you would text @math to 81010.
Freshmen who met the Knowledge Assessment scores already will be notified by Ms. Burczyk.

iReady Assessments for Grades K-8!
i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction. i-Ready replaces the Star Renaissance Assessments that they students took last school year.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions based on student responses. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.
Thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your child’s learning! I look forward to sharing i-Ready information with you throughout the year. If you have any questions about i-Ready, please do not hesitate to contact the school. You can also learn more about i-Ready by visiting i-ReadyCentral.com/FamilyCenter.
