Message From Mr. Jordan
As we conclude our first academic quarter and begin the second, we have been able to witness some amazing learning experiences and growth over the past week. As an example, our 6th and 7th grade orchestra students demonstrated remarkable progress during their "Fall Showcase". Meanwhile, our teachers stepped into the role of learners and collaborators themselves. Through a partnership with The Ohio State University and the Fulbright Program, Hastings teachers collaborated with a visiting cohort of educators from Germany for a deeply beneficial exchange.
We also extend a huge thank you to the Upper Arlington Education Foundation for making our 8th grade field trip possible on Monday. Students will visit the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, the Ohio Statehouse, and the Ohio Supreme Court. Our teachers have thoughtfully designed learning activities across each site so students can experience state government firsthand while honoring those who served.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in supporting our vibrant community of learners.
🏆 Chris Scherer Named the Best Buddies Champion of the Year! 🏆
Christopher Scherer has loved being part of Hastings Best Buddies since starting middle school. This year, Chris was nominated as a Best Buddies Champion to raise awareness and funds for this amazing organization. Together with Mr. Evans, Christopher organized a Best Buddies flag football event in early October which was a huge success celebrating inclusion and attended by over 35 UA students. This week Chris attended the Best Buddies Gala as the Hastings Champion. Through the incredible support of family and friends and Hastings, Chris raised over $33K for the Ohio Best Buddies chapter. He was named the 2026 Best Buddies Grand Champion of the Year. We are so thankful for everyone's support.
Christopher has worked hard to spread awareness about inclusion throughout the UA community together with the Best Buddies chapter. He is so thankful for Mr. Evans and his fellow Best Buddies. The funds Chris raised directly impact the Best Buddies chapters in Ohio.
We are BEYOND proud and excited to celebrate Christopher for exemplifying RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCY!

Digital Safety Presentation
Keeping students safe requires preparing them not only for the situations they may encounter at school and in the community, but also for the increasingly complex digital world they navigate every day. As part of our district’s annual Safety Week, held the week of October 19, we will provide students and families with practical, age-appropriate information to support safe and responsible technology use.
To support these efforts, we are pleased to welcome Jesse Weinberger, a former software programmer, a nationally recognized internet safety expert, and the author of The Boogeyman Exists: And He’s in Your Child’s Back Pocket. She will provide age-appropriate presentations for students in grades 3-6 focused on digital citizenship, responsible technology use, online decision-making, and personal safety. Following these presentations, she will also offer an evening presentation on November 4 geared toward parents/guardians.
Date: Tuesday, October 27th
Time: 8:15 - 9:15am
Location: Hastings Auditorium
As part of the presentation, students will be invited to complete a brief anonymous survey on paper about technology use and students’ experiences in digital environments. The purpose of the survey is to provide district-level information that can help inform our ongoing digital safety education and prevention efforts. Students will not be asked to provide their names, and the survey is not intended to identify individual students. A complete copy of the survey questions can be found HERE.
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
In order for your student to participate in this opportunity, you will need to complete this PERMISSION FORM. If you do not want your child to participate, we will provide an alternate, supervised learning activity at their school during the presentation time.

8th Grade Shadowing Experience
We are excited to announce the return of 8th-Grade Shadowing Day on Friday, April 16, 2027! This mandatory experiential learning event allows all 8th-grade students to step outside the classroom and explore career paths in real-world professional settings before they transition to high school. Students will spend this official school day off campus with a host and earn instructional-hour attendance credit upon submission of a reflection form.
How Parents Can Help:
Identify a Host: Support your student in reaching out to a relative, family friend, local business owner, or community professional to serve as their workplace host.
Prepare & Plan Ahead: Review the Outreach Guide, discuss career interests with your child, and check out the Shadowing FAQ to help them prepare.
Ensure Attendance Credit: Remind your child to complete and submit the post-event reflection.
If you have questions or are interested in volunteering as a host for local students, please contact Leah Miller, Career Development and Service Learning Specialist, at lmiller@uaschools.org or 614-487-5000.

Be Present Ohio: The Online Experience
As part of our commitment to student safety and well-being, 7th-grade students will participate in Be Present Ohio: The Online Experience (BPO:XP) during Health class beginning the week of November 2, 2026.
BPO:XP is an evidence-based online program developed by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation. Through videos and activities, students will learn about mental health, suicide prevention, warning signs, coping strategies, and how to seek help for themselves or others. The program fulfills Ohio’s annual suicide prevention and safety education requirements.
BPO:XP is a prevention and education program, not a mental health assessment or treatment. Students will have access to their school counselor if they have questions or concerns.
Families may opt their child out of the program by completing the attached form by October 30, 2026.

District Updates
Do you have questions about Issue 7?
As we approach Election Day, UA Schools wants to ensure our community has access to clear, factual information about Issue 7, the combined operating levy and bond issue on the November ballot. The school district’s role in this election is to share the facts, answer questions and help residents understand what is being proposed.
To help with that, we have put together a video version of the Issue 7 presentation that we have been sharing out in the community. The video provides an overview of the proposed issue and offers answers to common questions, with bookmarks to help you navigate directly to the topics most relevant to you.
To find additional factual information and answers to frequently asked questions, please visit the district website, www.uaschools.org/issue7.
