Monthly Reading logs are attached in your students Take Home Folder. Each night that they read they should record the amount of minutes and get a parent/guardian to initial.

Math Groups for Unit 1 Math Groups for Unit 1

We recently completed our Unit 1 Math Pretest, which helped us identify each student’s strengths and areas for growth. Based on this information, we have created three instructional groups to provide students with targeted instruction and support. During this unit, students may change classrooms for math and may not always be working with their homeroom teacher. This flexible grouping practice was put in place at the end of last school year to help ensure that every student receives instruction that best meets their individual learning needs. If you have any questions about your child’s math group or instruction, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher. We are excited to see our mathematicians grow!

Academics Academics

Literacy Literacy

We have been busy establishing our classroom expectations and routines while building a strong foundation for reading! We have enjoyed several meaningful read-alouds, including Giraffes Can’t Dance, The Magical Yet, and The Invisible Boy. Students have responded to stories in their reading notebooks and participated in constructive conversations with their partners.

We have also discussed the difference between fiction and nonfiction and have been working hard to build our reading stamina. We are so proud of the effort students are putting into becoming strong, thoughtful readers!

Next week, we will be taking our i-Ready Reading Diagnostic and continuing with our introductory reading unit as we learn more about ourselves as readers.

Writing Writing

We have been practicing responding to our read-aloud stories and Benchmark texts. Students have been sharing their thinking about what they read and practicing how to support their ideas with details from the text.

We have also been working on improving our handwriting and typing skills. Students are building confidence and fluency as they practice writing neatly and using technology to communicate their ideas.

Math Math

This week, we finished Lesson 0, which was a review of skills from last year. We also took our Unit 1 Pretest to help us see what students already know and what skills we will focus on throughout the unit.

In second grade, students will switch classrooms for math, so it is possible that your child’s homeroom teacher may not be their math teacher. We are excited about this opportunity for students to learn with different classmates and teachers!

Next week, we will complete our i-Ready Math Diagnostic and begin Lesson 1, which focuses on mental strategies for addition. Students will learn new ways to add, including making a ten and counting on. We are excited to build on our number sense and become more efficient addition strategists!
